Yankees Designate Aaron Laffey For Assignment

By Tim Dierkes | August 22, 2011 at 2:21pm CDT

The Yankees designated lefty Aaron Laffey for assignment, tweets Marc Carig of the Newark Star-Ledger.  They'd claimed him off waivers from the Mariners on Friday.  Carig notes that Laffey was placed on optional waivers, meaning he remains on the 40-man roster and can be pulled back if claimed.

Laffey, 26, posted a 4.14 ERA, 5.1 K/9, 3.5 BB/9, 1.4 HR/9, and 50.9% groundball rate in 45 2/3 innings for the Mariners and Yankees this year.

Because they just claimed him on Friday, and it seems like the Yankees are making moves just for the sake of being bored to this point. I just find humor in it, that’s all.

Certainly this is no Laffing matter for him.

Maybe it is a bit of a Laffey matter for him though.

I agree it’s funny what they’ve been doing, but it makes sense.  It’s like a kid at a candy store trying new stuff, deciding that particular candy sucks, and moving on to the next one to repeat the process until he gets something good.

Maybe it was an excuse to dump Molina, like they did years ago with Bruney, whom the Yankees didn’t want, so they traded him for nothing (well, a rule 5 draft pick that was returned to the Dodgers when the Yankees didn’t include him in their roster = Jamie Hoffmann).

Yeah, I think they picked him up just for the Twins series.  But I wouldn’t be surprised if they kept him.  Plus, teams stick guys on waivers just to check interest and test the water.  Half the league has been placed on waivers.  No big deal.

Could be just to clear a roster spot for Freddy Garcia and he could be called back up once rosters expand….
