Minor Moves: Rockies, Wise

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | October 6, 2011 at 1:27pm CDT

The latest minor moves from around MLB…

  • The Rockies outrighted Jose Morales, Matt Daley, Jim Miller, Greg Reynolds and Cory Riordan to Triple-A Colorado Springs, according to MLB.com's transactions page. Morales, a 28-year-old catcher, appeared in 22 games for the Rockies this year and Reynolds, the second overall pick in 2006, posted a 6.19 ERA with 5.1 K/9 and 2.8 BB/9 in 32 innings. Colorado's 40-man roster now stands at 35.
  • Center fielder Dewayne Wise, who suited up for the Marlins and Blue Jays this year, elected free agency, according to the same transactions page.

Players from the 1st round of the 2006 draft that have worked out in MLB so far.
The ones that have include (including supplemental round):
Evan Longoria, Tim Lincecum, Clayton Kershaw, Daniel Bard, Chris Perez, Max Scherzer, Ian Kennedy  and Drew Stubbs.

While I’m unsure of how Kennedy and Scherzer would have worked out in Denver, at Coors, I do believe they would be contributing. Longoria would be a star. Linecum would be a no. starter and Kershaw would be dynamite.

The Rockies had a golden opportunity and just chose very unwisely. I read someplace that Reynolds was considered a better talent than Lincecum and Kershaw. Maybe, but at the time I didn’t see Reynolds anywhere close to them and was horrified when I heard the Rockies would select him, which they did.

Those fears – justified. Injuries played a role but Reynolds, at 100 percent health, was never in Longoria’s, Lincecum’s or Kershaw’s class. The Rockies thought in Ian Stewart, they had a third baseman. So if an Alex Rodriguez talent is available to them one draft soon, and knowing they have Troy Tulowitzki signed, they pass on him?

It was a small move, but one of the worst moves the Twins made last offseason was giving up C Jose Morales. As shown by what Butera and Co. did. True Morales is only a singles hitter, but really, its beter him than a guy who goes for a 5-55 stretch during the regular season.

I’d pick up Reynolds and Morales. Send Reynolds to triple A maybe new team would help him. Morales looks like a decent backup option.

I’d pay a team to pick up Greg Reynolds because he’s absolutely terrible and I don’t ever want to see him in a Rockies uniform again because every last one of those terrible innings he’s had have taken about ten years off my life.
