Minor Moves: Velez, Hernandez, Luna, Montanez

By Dan Mennella | December 21, 2011 at 4:31pm CDT

We'll keep track of today's minor league transactions here …

  • The Cardinals signed utility player Eugenio Velez, according to Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. Velez appeared in 34 games for the Dodgers this past season, but didn't collect a single hit. He did post an .834 OPS in 235 Triple-A plate appearances, while playing right field, left field, second base and third base.
  • The Pirates have agreed to terms with infielder Anderson Hernandez on a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training, the team announced. Hernandez, 29, has played in 240 Major League games over six seaons with the Mets, Nationals, Indians and Astros. He last appeared in the bigs with Houston in 2010.
  • The Phillies announced they've signed infielder Hector Luna and outfielder Luis Montanez to minor league contracts with invitations to Spring Training. Luna has seen seen Major League action with the Cardinals, Indians, Blue Jays and Marlins, getting as many as 379 plate appearances with the Redbirds in 2006. Montanez appeared in 36 games with the Cubs in 2011.

Anderson Hernandez. Can you say depth signing? The bucs have plenty of insurance at this position to say the least.

They have enough depth at this position to hit the bottom of the ocean.

Velez—–blah. Now that we got that out of the way we can focus on adding Beltran.

I don’t know who the GM of the Cards is, but I love him so much right now.

John Mozeliak. And hopefully, Velez doesn’t sniff MLB next season.

never know, at best he’s a call up if someone gets hurt. or he could always strike lightning in camp, and prove to the Cardinals that he should be on the team. keep in mind he has some speed, can play IN and OF. Kind of seems like a Schumaker type, except with more speed, and Scumaker hits better. no clue who’s better at defense though. plus, the Cardinals need someone to handle Allen Craig’s roster spot. As of now …. it looks like it could be Velez and Chambers, and that kid who the Cardinals got in the 5-rule draft from the Nationals. That’s unless the Cardinals go find a righthanded hitting OF, like Cody Ross (who i’d take). Or maybe Greene and Velez battle for a bench spot. hey, at least Velez has shown more in the majors than Greene has. if they battle for a bench spot, and Greene loses, then that means he could be traded or released. Greene’s time might soon be over as a Cardinal, if he doesn’t show anything and get better at defense.

Eugenio signs with StL, which means that he will automatically get 25 hits in his first 37 at-bats.  It’s a rule.

WSH offered Bryce Harper to COL for Seth Smith and they turned them down.

Seriously Mozeliak?! Velez? What scares me is that it doesn’t say it’s a minor league contract, unless being under the “Minor moves” title is implying it.

Velez is AWFUL! Wait until you see him play OF.  The way he circles a fly ball, they should play the “Benny Hill” theme!!!
