Orioles Designate Pedro Viola For Assignment

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | December 1, 2011 at 2:14pm CDT

The Orioles designated left-hander Pedro Viola for assignment to create roster space for the newly-acquired Taylor Teagarden, the team announced. Baltimore's 40-man roster remains full.

Viola, 28, has appeared in six games for the Orioles since 2010. The Dominican lefty spent much of the 2011 season at Double-A, where he posted a 2.04 ERA with 9.1 K/9 and 2.9 BB/9 in 39 2/3 innings.

He remembers his time in the DR quite fondly.

Anyone think the Orioles lost the Teagarden trade now? On the bright side, Viola could be a valuable BP pitcher to some team, he is good at allowing home runs.

You said it. He was the O’s “we need an extra reliever” reliever. Fools you with those nice minor league numbers and then gets consistently bombed in the bigs. Didn’t he allow like 3 straight home runs against the Red Sox this year? I could be making that up.

I think you are right about the Red Sox homeruns.  I dont know how he kept fooling us because his aaa numbers were bad to.  At 28 you should be beating up aa bats.

Ha, just found it via the Baltimore Sun:

“David Ortiz, Josh Reddick and Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit back-to-back-to-back home runs off Viola in the seventh inning, the first time the Orioles have allowed the feat since Guthrie was taken deep by three consecutive New York Yankees on May 20, 2009.”

I mean this.  This is the first thing Duquette has done to make me like him.  Viola, for those who don’t remember, is one of the guys the O’s left on their roster instead of Beato.  Completely baffling.

“Pedro Viola” looks like one of those randomly created MLB 2k11 names that are so funny…  My fave was “Hidecki Rodriguez”.
