Minor Moves: Ruben Gotay, Francisco Samuel

The latest minor moves from around MLB…

  • The Blue Jays have signed infielder Ruben Gotay, reports Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus (on Twitter). The 29-year-old hasn't played in the big leagues since 2008 and is a .255/.315/.371 career hitter in 811 plate appearances. Gotay is joining his seventh organization and hit .247/.333/.347 in 518 Triple-A plate appearances split between the Braves and Marlins last year.
  • The Cardinals released right-handed reliever Francisco Samuel, B.J. Rains of FOXSportsMidwest.com tweets. In six minor league seasons the former prospect owns a 5.66 ERA with 11.4 K/9 and 8.6 BB/9. Samuel, a hard-throwing 25-year-old, had lat and shoulder troubles in 2011 and it had become apparent that wasn't going to make the Opening Day roster this year.

“Wow cant believe Gotay is still around.”

That’s about what was thinking when went and looked up how long Julio Gotay had been retired, since remembered him as yet another reserve M/infielder named Gotay and just a slap hitter from the NL for several seasons… SHOCK… Looked and he’s been gone from the majors since 1969…

I’m guessing AA was a fan of MVP Baseball 2005. Rocco Baldelli can’t be far behind.¬†

Its not supposed to benefit them…just a depth move, in case guys get injured.

  3. Hard to believe Samuel was once so highly touted the FO said he was untouchable

“Every team needs it or you’d have 12 man rosters in the minors.”

after looking over all the retreads Boston signed already (nearly 20) am having a hard time figuring out where their legit AAA people are going to go, or find time.. Even cutting it close and the fringe AAA guys sent back to AA, they have 10 legit prospects who deserve to be at AAA.

Teams go too far sometimes with the amount of filler types, especially when many are of less use than the people they already had/have in the minors.
