Phillies Seek Backup Catcher

The Phillies are looking for a backup catcher, ESPN.com's Buster Olney tweets. The front office would like to improve upon their current internal options if possible.

Brian Schneider projects to back Carlos Ruiz up, and Erik Kratz and Sebastian Valle are also on Philadelphia's 40-man roster. Ivan Rodriguez and Ramon Castro are the only free agent catchers who spent significant time in the Major Leagues in 2011, so the Phillies may look to complete a trade. Royals GM Dayton Moore is also on the lookout for catching depth this spring.

I think Ivan has one more good year in him, he would be a GREAT fit for the Royals, he could not only be a catcher but a mentor to that youngster team !

I am a Phillies fan, and I do not feel good about this season.  At least there is an extra wild card spot.

my thoughts exactly. maybe there’s something wrong w/schneider RAJ isn’t telling us. I’ve been clamoring for Kratz to get a chance since last year.  he was hurt for a bit but hit .288 with 15 homers in the minors. Save some money for 2b and give him a chance

Schneider is toast.  He does nothing with the bat anymore, and could not throw out you trying to steal third Yoda.

The real question is, why did Amaro even bother re-signing Schneider?  Did Amaro just wake up today and realize that Schneider can not play anymore? Was it not obvious last year?

I’m sorry but I just find that line of thinking silly. The league made an extra playoff spot and that’s what we all have to live with now. I’m a Phillies fan. I don’t feel great about the season, but if they get in as the fifth team I’ll be happier than if they don’t make the playoffs at all.

Serious, you cannot be. The Playoffs, the Playoffs are.
