Rays Sign Will Rhymes

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | January 19, 2012 at 12:41pm CDT

The Rays signed second baseman Will Rhymes, outfielder Jesus Feliciano and right-handed reliever Romulo Sanchez to minor league deals, Matt Eddy of Baseball America tweets. Rhymes, 28, spent parts of the past two seasons with the Tigers, who non-tendered him in December. The team confirmed the moves and reports the signing of right-hander Matt Torra.

Rhymes, who's listed at 5'9" and 155 pounds, owns a .283/.341/.370 line in 312 MLB plate appearances. He was far more impressive at the plate in 2010 than in 2011, when his batting average on balls in play dropped by 50 points.

Feliciano made his MLB debut with the Mets in 2010, soon after his 31st birthday. He posted a .563 OPS in 119 plate appearances and spent the 2011 campaign in the minors. Sanchez, 27, spent last year in Japan and has MLB experience with the Pirates and Yankees.

Mets Sign Three To Minor League Deals

By Luke Adams 2 | February 20, 2011 at 8:51am CDT

After reaching the majors for the first time last season at age 31, Jesus Feliciano was dropped from the Mets' 40-man roster shortly after the season. A few months later, however, Feliciano is returning to New York. The team re-signed the outfielder on a minor league deal, tweets Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork. The Mets also inked Chris Shelton and Kent Tsujimoto to minor league contracts.

Before making his major league debut last June, Feliciano had spent his last four seasons playing for the Mets' Triple-A affiliate. Though he doesn't hit for much power, slugging just 18 homers in more than 5,000 minor league plate appearances, the lefty has hit .317 in AAA for the Mets over the last four years.

Shelton, 30, has seen time in the majors with the Tigers, Rangers, and Mariners. The first baseman is perhaps best remembered for his torrid start in Detroit in 2006, when he homered nine times in his first 13 games. He hasn't played in the bigs since he earned 28 plate appearances for Seattle in 2009.

Tsujimoto, a 22-year-old Japanese right-hander, pitched for Na Koa Ikaika Maui of the Golden Baseball League in 2010, recording a 2.88 ERA and 12.6 K/9 in 32 relief appearances.

Jesus Feliciano Weighing Minor League Offers

By Mike Axisa | January 30, 2011 at 6:05pm CDT

It took Jesus Feliciano 12 years before he finally reached the big leagues, which he did with the Mets in 2010. Now the 31-year-old outfielder is weighing multiple minor league contract offers according to Adam Rubin of ESPN New York. It's unclear which teams made those offers.

Feliciano has spent the last five years playing in Triple-A, hitting .316/.363/.394 in 1,834 plate appearances. In 119 trips to the plate for the Amazin's last season, he hit .231/.276/.287 while playing all three outfield spots. The Mets dropped Feliciano off their 40-man roster back in November.

Odds & Ends: Mets, Giants, Gregg, Pujols, Webb

By Zachary Links | November 4, 2010 at 10:33pm CDT

Links for tonight as we remember Hall of Fame manager Sparky Anderson, who passed away today at the age of 76.  MLB.com's Marty Noble penned a great article today looking back at the life and career of the universally beloved skipper.

  • The Mets announced that GM Sandy Alderson will interview in-house candidates Wally Backman, Terry Collins, and Chip Hale in California this weekend, writes Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com.  Earlier today the Mets sat down with Bob Melvin and Dave Jauss in New York.
  • Giants GM Brian Sabean says that the club will soon make an offer to Aubrey Huff and will "certainly be in discussions" with Juan Uribe, writes Andrew Baggarly of the Mercury News.
  • Expect the Rockies to call Kevin Gregg's agent, tweets Troy Renck of The Denver Post.
  • Cardinals slugger Albert Pujols said that he hopes to work out an extension with the club before Opening Day, according to the Associated Press.
  • Jonathan Maurer, the agent for Brandon Webb, says that several teams have already contacted him with interest in his client, according to the Associated Press.  We learned yesterday that Webb would like to return to Arizona but that seems unlikely.
  • After turning down his end of a mutual option today, Scott Podsednik is still in talks with the Dodgers, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports.
  • The Denver Post's Troy Renck says that Jorge de la Rosa hasn't been presented with an offer from the Rockies since last winter when he instead opted to take a one-year deal in arbitration.
  • The Mets dropped five players from the 40-man roster today including Jesus Feliciano and Omir Santos, tweets Adam Rubin of ESPNNewYork.com.
