Khalil Greene Rumors

Tigers Interested In Laird

According to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers continue to have interest in Rangers catcher Gerald Laird. Evan Grant of the Dallas Morning News says the Tigers "seem to have the most ardent interest" in Laird, and a trade could save Texas nearly $3MM. Grant believes the Reds are another possibility; would they trade Homer Bailey for him? Laird, a Scott Boras client, is under team control for two more seasons. Morosi says the Tigers also like Miguel Montero of the D'Backs, but the teams don't seem to match up well. Another note - Morosi says...   Continue Reading

Third Team In Peavy Deal: Orioles?

According to Jeff Zrebiec and Peter Schmuck of the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles appear to be the third team in the Jake Peavy-Cubs trade talks. Kevin Towers told Tim Brown earlier this week he may have found the third team. According to the Sun, one scenario could have the Cubs sending Felix Pie to Baltimore for Garrett Olson, who would become part of the Cubs' package for Peavy. The Orioles once targeted Pie during the Brian Roberts talks, while the Padres wanted Olson for Khalil Greene. No deal is imminent. The authors add that acquiring Pie would not affect the...   Continue Reading

Twins Rumors: Padres, Blake, Reyes

Joe Christensen brings us the latest on the Twins, but unfortunately there's not much going on. Christensen learned from a Padres official that there's been very little dialogue with the Twins. Some have suggested Kevin Kouzmanoff and Khalil Greene would be fits for Minnesota. Hopefully they're setting their sights higher. On the Casey Blake front: slight progress. The Twins have an arbitration decision to make by Monday's deadline with Dennys Reyes, who is a Type B. The Twins won't get burned badly if Reyes accepts, so I imagine they'll offer. He probably wants two years somewhere instead.   Continue Reading

Padres Rumors: Greene, Peavy

Let's check in on the Padres. SI.com's Jon Heyman talked to GM Kevin Towers, who doesn't anticipate a deal for Khalil Greene anytime soon. The market for free agent shortstops is buzzing right now, so it makes sense to wait until after the top guys sign. MLB.com's Corey Brock says Towers can't move to address other team needs until the Jake Peavy situation is resolved. The package for Peavy will likely fill multiple pitching needs, and then Towers can move on to free agent bargains and a backup catcher. Sean McAdam has a Padres article up at ESPN.com, describing the...   Continue Reading

Orioles Targeting Izturis

According to Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun, the Orioles have contacted shortstop Cesar Izturis' agent to express interest. Zrebiec believes the 28 year-old defensive whiz tops their list. Izturis earned $3.05MM this year. The Orioles have also had trade discussions for Khalil Greene and Bobby Crosby. The Padres requested Garrett Olson for Greene, and the Orioles passed. Zrebiec says the Orioles are not interested in Rafael Furcal, Orlando Cabrera, or Edgar Renteria. If they spend big on a free agent, it'll be A.J. Burnett or Mark Teixeira. However, Furcal's agent Paul Kinzer said yesterday that the O's are one...   Continue Reading

Blue Jays Rumors: Greene, Giambi, Penny

Jeff Blair of the Globe and Mail has a few Blue Jays rumors, hidden at the bottom of his column today. The Jays have kicked the tires on Padres shortstop Khalil Greene, who will almost certainly be dealt if San Diego acquires Yunel Escobar. Greene is coming off an awful season and is set to earn $6.5MM, so he shouldn't be too hard to pry loose. Free agents Jason Giambi and Brad Penny are on the Jays' radar.   Continue Reading

Orioles Rumors: Baez, Greene, Hernandez

Jeff Zrebiec of the Baltimore Sun has a few Orioles notes today. Danys Baez, who hasn't pitched since 2006, would like to prepare as a starter for 2008. Andy MacPhail is open to the idea; the Orioles have more open spots in their rotation than their bullpen. Baez is set to earn $5.5MM in '09, the last year of his deal. Starting is where the money's at, unless you get a chance to close. The Orioles are interested in Khalil Greene, but prefer a long-term solution at shortstop. Nothing new on the extension front for Nick Markakis and Brian Roberts....   Continue Reading

Reds Rumors: Pitching, Greene, Hairston

Here's the latest from John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer. GM Walt Jocketty said he will not be trading young pitching for a quick fix. Still, you have to think Homer Bailey is available in the right deal for another young player. Despite an earlier report to the contrary, the Reds are not interested in San Diego shortstop Khalil Greene. If Jocketty is to acquire a shortstop, it'll be a pre-arbitration player. The Reds are shaky at shortstop - Alex Gonzalez is penciled in for next year, but he missed all of '08 with a compression fracture in his knee....   Continue Reading

Orioles, Reds, Tigers, Jays Interested In Greene

THURSDAY: Reds GM Walt Jocketty shot down the rumor that he was interested in Greene. If he adds a shortstop, it'll be a 0-3 guy. TUESDAY, 11:21pm: Tom Krasovic adds the Blue Jays to the mix for Greene. Padres GM Kevin Towers says Greene would likely be traded in a separate deal rather than packaged with Jake Peavy. 7:42pm: The Red Sox and Padres made a point to officially dismiss the idea of Crisp for Greene. 2:59pm: It seems that LaRue was saying both Crisp and Greene are available, not that one was offered for the other. So, scratch the...   Continue Reading

More Odds And Ends: Padres, Francoeur, Manny, Phillies

A few more notes from the MLBiverse... Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune is reporting that the Padres have not set their '09 payroll but that it could be as low as $40MM. Krasovic also notes that the Braves are not one of the teams that have inquired about Khalil Greene. Also, Kevin Towers continues to sound positive about the possibility of resigning Trevor Hoffman. The Padres have offered Hoffman a one-year deal for $4MM with a '10 option at the same price. Paul DePodesta comments about all of the rumors that are swirling on his personal blog. We...   Continue Reading

Tigers Want Short-Term Shortstop

According to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers seek a short-term solution at shortstop. The Tigers like the idea of using prospect Cale Iorg in 2010. That means they won't be signing free agents Orlando Cabrera and Rafael Furcal. The Tigers view the relief market in the way - they like their long-term options (Ryan Perry, for example). The Tigers have "mild interest" in Khalil Greene, who is signed through 2009. They don't like his $6.5MM price tag, which might mean Jack Wilson is also too pricey. John McDonald is a more affordable name on the...   Continue Reading

Rosenthal's Latest: Furcal, Bradley, Greinke

Another day, another Ken Rosenthal column. The A's have payroll flexibility, and are expressing "strong interest" in free agent shortstop Rafael Furcal. Bobby Crosby is set to earn $5.25MM in '09, but it makes sense to upgrade. Contrary to previous reports, Rosenthal says the Tigers are not in on Furcal. They'll also pass on Francisco Rodriguez, which was expected. Rosenthal discusses possible fits for Milton Bradley, including the Rays, Rangers, Blue Jays, Mets, Cardinals, and Phillies. It will be hard to overlook the health risk and give Bradley a three-year deal, especially for an NL club. Rosenthal confirms interest in...   Continue Reading

Braves Rumors: Ludwick, Johnson, Escobar, Francoeur

David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution has all kinds of Braves info, found in the body and comments of his latest blog post. The Braves have expressed interest in Ryan Ludwick, and the Cardinals would be willing to take Kelly Johnson or Yunel Escobar in return. However, the Braves would probably have to include one of their middle infielders in a Jake Peavy deal and don't want to trade both this winter. Braves GM Frank Wren publicly acknowledged the Peavy trade talks. O'Brien believes a package built around Escobar has a chance. Pitching prospect Tommy Hanson is not available. The...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Twins, Big Unit, Rockies

Links and tidbits for Wednesday. Remember to check back on this post for updates! Dave Cameron notes that the Elias rankings screwed over Damaso Marte by making him a Type A. See also: Doug Brocail, Bob Howry, Darren Oliver. Remember to check out the Previous Entries link at the bottom of the website, as stories get buried pretty quickly in times like these. Japanese outfielder Saburo Ohmura (link in Japanese) would be fine with a minor league deal. Roch Kubatko has info on what it might take to trade for Khalil Greene or Jack Wilson. Pirates president Frank Coonelly confirmed...   Continue Reading

Cardinals Rumors: Pujols, Payroll, Needs

Joe Strauss of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch has the latest Cardinals buzz... The Cards are going to stand pat with their starting rotation until they learn more about Chris Carpenter's injury. He'll be examined in late November. Strauss says a swing man type acquisition is possible as insurance. The Cardinals are likely to approach Albert Pujols about an extension before he enters his 2011 option year. Pujols will earn just $16MM in each of the '09, '10, and '11 seasons. Teams must be salivating at the prospect of Pujols on the free agent market, but the Cardinals will try to...   Continue Reading

Latest Peavy Rumors

9:03pm: Lots of good stuff from yesterday's San Diego Union-Tribune that we haven't covered. First, Kevin Towers says he's looking for young controllable pitching and then middle infielders in a package for Peavy. No mention of a center field focus, which had been mentioned previously. Additionally, Towers explained that the Astros do not match up well given his stated desire for multiple young pitchers. So far the Braves look like the best fit. On the Cardinals front, Joe Strauss says the team's scouts met this week and are enthusiastic about pursuing Peavy. Strauss's sources say Peavy's availability "loosened the organization's...   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Pitt, Manny, White Sox

Links for Friday... The Red Sox claimed pitcher Dewon Day off waivers from the White Sox, and also designated pitcher Chris Smith for assignment. Jeff Gordon of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch ponders trading Colby Rasmus to get Jake Peavy and Khalil Greene. Brad Pitt as Billy Beane in the Moneyball movie? Beane hopes to add offense this winter. J.C. Bradbury estimates Manny Ramirez's value at $128MM over the next six years. I think Manny and Boras would happily accept such an offer. Dave Cameron laments the lack of respect for Ryan Langerhans. South Side Sox presents an offseason plan for...   Continue Reading

Latest On Peavy

9:53pm: More from Olney. The Padres are aggressively shopping Peavy, with the Braves and Dodgers two possible suitors. Olney's sources believe Peavy will be dealt "in the weeks ahead." The Padres want two young pitchers and a near MLB-ready center fielder in return. The Braves and Dodgers could both meet that demand. 7:07pm: O'Brien has a new article up; he says the Braves and Padres have discussed Peavy. Not much is known beyond that. Paul DePodesta offers his thoughts on the situation, basically explaining that any player should be available for a compelling return. Thus far, the Padres haven't received...   Continue Reading

Latest Peavy Chatter

10:39am: More from Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune. Peavy has a strong preference for the NL, and wants to play for a winner. Axelrod mentioned Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, and St. Louis as cities that fit for Peavy and his family. Because of Peavy's willingness to pitch in L.A., the Angels were named as a possibility by Axelrod. 8:27am: Let's catch up on recent Jake Peavy articles. Dan Hayes of the North County Times wrote about Peavy Monday, quoting Padres GM Kevin Towers saying nothing is imminent. Hayes talked to several sources who say Peavy prefers to...   Continue Reading

Odds And Ends: Cardinals, Astros, K-Rod

Links for Saturday... It doesn't sound like Jon Daniels has autonomy in Texas. Ian Hunter of Country 103.9 in Ontario recently talked to MLBTR about the Blue Jays. Click here to download the mp3. Reds GM Walt Jocketty has talked to three or four of the Reds' nine free agents. John Fay speculates those players are David Weathers, Jerry Hairston Jr., Mike Lincoln, and Jeremy Affeldt. The Padres' grievance against shortstop Khalil Greene won't be heard until spring. The case of Doyle Alexander may be a precedent; the Yankees were not able to recover any money after Alexander broke a...   Continue Reading

Padres Rumors: Greene, Team Needs

New Padres articles over at the San Diego Union-Tribune and MLB.com... The Padres filed a grievance against Khalil Greene based on his self-inflicted broken hand bone. They may seek to recover over $1MM. The Padres must be really tight on cash, as I've never heard of a team doing this (especially against a player under contract). Greene is owed $6.5MM in '09. GM Kevin Towers admitted payroll may be lower than $58MM in 2009. Towers will surf the trade market for a veteran backup catcher and perhaps a reliever.   Continue Reading

Padres Rumors: Maddux, Hoffman, Kouzmanoff, Greene, Bard

4:32pm: More from Towers - he's had inquiries on Jake Peavy, Trevor Hoffman, Heath Bell, Kouzmanoff, and Greene. Potential deals will be assessed after the season, though Towers wants Hoffman to stay until the end of his career. 2:43pm: MLB.com's Corey Brock has the latest on the Padres and Greg Maddux. Maddux apparently will only accept a trade to a West Coast team, preferably the Dodgers. Padres GM Kevin Towers doesn't mind trading within the division. The only piece missing is interest from L.A. They've got good pitching depth, but if Maddux could be added at a reasonable price, why...   Continue Reading

Cubs Rumors: Fuentes, Greene

Cubs beat writer Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald has a new blog post up. Miles' Cubs sources "emphatically" denied interest in Padres shortstop Khalil Greene. And as we noted Monday, the San Diego Union-Tribune killed that rumor several hours after they posted it. Jim Hendry is in the market for a reliever, and Miles expects him to be one of many GMs inquiring on Colorado's Brian Fuentes. Roughly a dozen teams are eyeing the lefty, so the Rox should get something good. Miles mentions the possibility of the Cubs pursuing an extra bat, presumably of the bench variety.   Continue Reading

Cubs Inquired On Khalil Greene?

10:01pm: The below-referenced article has been pulled from the Union-Tribune website, so I assume it turned out to be untrue. 3:26pm: According to Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union Tribune, the Cubs recently inquired on Padres shortstop Khalil Greene. The Padres prefer not to sell low on Greene, however. The Cubs have been linked to Greene in the past, and the Padres were asking about Felix Pie about a year ago. Perhaps Pie has lost the untouchable label with his .264/.315/.442 performance at Triple A. He's hitting better lately, though. Greene is on the first year of a two-year,...   Continue Reading

Olney's Latest: Sexson, Ibanez, Ortiz

Buster Olney's blog post is overloaded with rumors today. Here's a rundown: Olney's Speculation: Will the Red Sox will express interest in Khalil Greene with Julio Lugo on the DL for 4-6 weeks? Olney also wonders if the Dodgers will seek Huston Street if Takashi Saito is seriously hurt. Scout Speculation: Huston Street and Matt Murton to the Rays for prospects? Bobby Kielty was granted release by the Red Sox. Richie Sexson could decide where to go based on greatest offered playing time. I'd say that's expected for a veteran starter. Olney says that requests for Max Scherzer are keeping...   Continue Reading

Baseball Blogs Weigh In: Braun, Holliday, Kouzmanoff, Greene, Sabean

Let's take a look at what is being said about some recent rumors, trades and signings in the Blogosphere... Right Field Bleachers sees the signing of Ryan Braun and Corey Hart to long-term deals as a "must" for the Brewers. Brewers Nation sees the Braun deal as evidence that Prince Fielder will not sign an extension even if the two situations are very different. Oleanders and Morning Glories thinks that if Nats' management was hoping to sign Ryan Zimmerman to a Troy Tulowitzki-type deal, Braun's deal may have raised the bar. Squawking Baseball sees the recent trend in giving long-term...   Continue Reading

Khalil Greene A Possibility For Jays?

Call it informed speculation, but Jeff Blair wonders if the Jays will make a run at Padres shortstop Khalil Greene. Blair points out that J.P. Ricciardi just missed drafting Greene in 2002. Greene, 28, is off to a slow start this year (.208/.253/.318 in 170 plate appearances). He won't get on base, but the power is legit. Greene makes $6.5MM in '09 before free agent eligibility. The problem is that the Padres likely hope to be competitive next year, and they don't have any kind of replacement for Greene waiting in the wings. There are decent young shortstops without starting...   Continue Reading

Pie-Greene Rumor Denied

MAY 7th: Bruce Miles of the Daily Herald discussed the Pie-Greene rumor with Cubs officials, and it was "emphatically shot down." APRIL 30th: Yesterday Tom Krasovic of the San Diego Union-Tribune wrote of Kevin Towers' pursuit of a long-term center field option. Jim Edmonds remains a question mark, and his contract is up after '08 anyway. Krasovic says the Cubs "have kept tabs" on shortstop Khalil Greene, while the Padres are still eyeing Felix Pie. The Cubs' win-now approach could lead to that move, as Reed Johnson is doing fine in center field so far. Greene is signed through the...   Continue Reading

Greene Could Stay In San Diego

Shortstop Khalil Greene recently signed for two years and $11MM, a deal that bought out his arbitration years. Padres GM Kevin Towers said in January that Greene might prefer to play near his family on the East Coast. However, MLB.com's Corey Brock quotes Greene as saying today, "There's nowhere else where I would want to play than San Diego." So maybe Greene will re-sign following the '09 season, after all.   Continue Reading

Khalil Greene's Future

Padres beat writer Corey Brock sums up the Khalil Greene situation on his blog. Greene is due for free agency after the 2009 season, and it does not look like he wants to stay in San Diego longer than that. Despite his Spicoli-like appearance he might prefer to play on the East Coast and/or in a more hitter friendly park. He's 28, plays strong defense, and has a lot of power. He has been a bit OBP-challenged, whether due to low batting averages, lack of walks, or both. He's set to earn $4-5MM in '08. Plenty of teams could use..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Hinske, Doumit, Colon, Greene

It's up to an impressive 5.7 degrees where I am, but I still don't think I'll be going outside much today. Hence, some odds and ends. Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald believes Eric Hinske might sign with the Diamondbacks this week. The 30 year-old former ROY has a career line of .255/.336/.434, with much better work against righties. John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus says the Red Sox are interested in the Pirates' Ryan Doumit. However Perrotto says the Bucs are reluctant to trade the versatile Doumit, who turns 27 in April. Only past Doumit rumor I can find was..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Inge, Greene, Pavano

A few tidbits this morning as we wait to hear more on Fukudome... The Tigers and Pirates have had talks about Brandon Inge. Not sure how he fits in with that club, but OK. Yesterday Barry Svrluga wrote of a failed Padres-Nats trade worth noting. The Nats would've sent Jon Rauch or Chad Cordero plus Felipe Lopez to the Padres for Khalil Greene. The talks fizzled; it never sounded like something the Padres would be interested in. They usually grow their own relievers. Tom Krasovic over at the San Diego Union-Tribune elaborates a little more on Jim Bowden's love for..   Continue Reading

Odds and Ends: Garcia, Greene, DeJesus

With so many rumors, there's a need for a daily Odds and Ends post to catch 'em all. Buster Olney talked to Freddy Garcia's agent. He's looking at a June return from shoulder surgery. Indians GM Mark Shapiro made an offer on Brad Lidge. The Astros didn't even reply. They did hear back from the Marlins on their Miguel Cabrera inquiry. The price is seemingly too high for talks to continue. Peter Gammons says that before the Astros got Michael Bourn, the White Sox pushed for a Chad Qualls for Ryan Sweeney swap. Evan Grant notes that the Rangers have..   Continue Reading

Padres Rumors: Crisp, Pie, Andruw, Eckstein

Tom Krasovic continues to set the standard for Padres inside information. Today's column is especially delicious for rumor junkies, with tons of new material to chew on. Kevin Towers expects to fill his center field vacancy via trade. He may first want to wait to see if Mike Cameron accepts the team's upcoming offer of arbitration. Cameron is a Type B free agent. Remember that he will be limited to 137 games in '07. As for trade candidates, Coco Crisp is on the radar but the Padres smartly won't part with Chase Headley. Krasovic notes that Bud Black's connection with..   Continue Reading

A Possible 2008 White Sox Roster

Nathaniel Whalen of the Daily Southtown speculates on a possible 2008 White Sox roster. His scenario sends Jon Garland and Brian Anderson to San Diego for Khalil Greene, Heath Bell, and a pitching prospect. Not sure who the Padres would use at shortstop, then. Whalen's scenario also has the White Sox signing Aaron Rowand. Most folks around Chicago expect Kenny Williams to make a run at him, especially if it's for Eric Byrnes bucks. But that leaves Ryan Sweeney and Jerry Owens as the corner outfielders. Neither fits the profile of a corner outfielder, and I'm not sure the Sox..   Continue Reading
