Scott Eyre Rumors
By Tim Dierkes [November 10, 2008 at 5:15pm CST]
According to Scott Lauber of The News Journal, the Phillies signed reliever Scott Eyre to a one-year deal worth $2MM plus bonuses. Eyre, 36, posted a 4.21 ERA in 25.2 innings with the Cubs and Phillies this year. He was much better in his 14.1 innings with the Phils. He dealt with elbow and groin injuries during his time with the Cubs.

5:44pm: MLB.com's Ken Mandel says the Phillies have Rocco Baldelli, Jerry Hairston Jr., and Kevin Mench on the radar in the event they don't re-sign Burrell. The Phillies have long liked Baldelli, though the Rays hope to talk contract soon. Reds GM Walt Jocketty recently met with Hairston's agent, and feels he made progress. And the Hanshin Tigers hope to lure Mench to Japan. 9:38am: Checkin' in on the Phillies... GM Ruben Amaro Jr. had an informal five-minute talk with Casey Close, who represents Ryan Howard and Joe Blanton. Talks have not yet begun with free agents Pat Burrell, Jamie...

THURSDAY: More Giants info, courtesy of John Shea of the San Francisco Chronicle. GM Brian Sabean is looking for offense in the infield, but he considers Cain untouchable. Jonathan Sanchez or various pitching prospects could be trade bait instead. Sabean also met with the agents for various free agent hitters and relievers, including Orlando Hudson and Bob Howry. WEDNESDAY: Andrew Baggarly of the San Jose Mercury News has some interesting rumors this evening. Baggarly believes the rumor of the Giants' interest in Rafael Furcal makes sense, as it'd solidify their middle infield situation. He doesn't see the Giants signing Pat...

Let's round up the Phillies links. By the way, I am hoping to get to their Offseason Outlook on Friday. The first issue is Pat Burrell, to whom the Phillies will probably make a two-year offer (according to Buster Olney). It is true that Burrell added a Philly-based agent (Ed Hayes), but he's also keeping Greg Genske. The confusion with agents is one reason negotiations haven't begun with the Phils. Burrell would love to return. If he doesn't re-sign, the Giants may be interested. Keep in mind that Burrell does not want to DH. If Burrell leaves, the Phillies hope...

12:47pm: Scott Lauber has the latest from the Amaro press conference. Manny Ramirez seems unlikely as a left field solution. Execs surveyed by Jerry Crasnick felt the same. Burrell switched to a Philly-based agent, and talks will begin soon with the Phillies. Pat Gillick will remain with the Phillies as a paid consultant. 11:13am: The Phillies locked up Ruben Amaro Jr. as their GM through 2011. Items on his to-do list: Left fielder Pat Burrell could be back if he accepts a two-year deal. Otherwise, the Phils will kick the tires on Manny Ramirez, Matt Holliday, and Magglio Ordonez. Jim...

According to Scott Lauber of The News Journal, lefty Scott Eyre would like to return to the Phillies next year. Eyre is a free agent after the season. He told Lauber he'd be up for a one-year deal to stay. Eyre, 36, has tossed 11 strong innings for the Phillies since coming over in a trade with the Cubs. Eyre has shown he can still be effective when healthy. He's earning $3.8MM this year. If he'll take a one-year deal, the Phils might as well do it. It beats giving three years to Damaso Marte.

Here's a quick look back at some of the bigger stories on MLBTR over the past week: D'Backs ace Dan Haren signed a very affordable extension with the team, which would keep him in Arizona through 2012 with an option for 2013. Great deal for the D'Backs and their fans. Brian Giles was claimed off waivers by the Red Sox, which is now believed to have been an effort to block the Rays from acquiring him. Giles blocked the trade to Boston with his no-trade clause. The Rockies acquired Livan Hernandez from the Twins. Minnesota won't receive a player in...

According to Todd Zolecki of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Phillies acquired lefty Scott Eyre for A ball pitcher Brian Schlitter. Eyre, 36, posted a 7.15 ERA in 11.1 innings with the Cubs. He spent time on the DL with elbow and groin problems. Eyre had a nice run in the second half last year as well as May this year. He still has about $1.15MM left on his contract; the Phillies will pay all of it. The Red Sox had also been interested in Eyre.

Here's today's link roundup. Nate Silver of Baseball Prospectus rates the best remaining fits for Barry Bonds. The Angels come out on top. The Mets seem pessimistic about Ryan Church returning this season. MLB.com's Jonathan Mayo has the latest buzz on the unsigned draft picks. The Astros dug up a pitcher in the independent leagues who is said to touch 100 mph. He's a 21 year-old righty named Jack Tilghman. The Pirates plan to offer long-term contracts to Nate McLouth and Ryan Doumit. Sean McAdam says the Red Sox still have some interest in Scott Eyre. Dave Cameron can't figure...

WEDNESDAY: According to Sean McAdam of the Providence Journal, the Red Sox still have interest in Eyre. Scott Lauber figures the Phillies are likely to inquire as well. TUESDAY: To make room for closer Kerry Wood, the Cubs designated lefty reliever Scott Eyre for assignment today. Eyre, 36, posted a 7.15 ERA in 11.1 innings with the Cubs this year. He spent time on the DL with elbow and groin problems. Eyre actually had a nice run in the second half last year as well as May this year. Eyre still has about $1.15MM left on his contract. Perhaps teams...

Here are today's links. Live chat today here at 2pm CST. MiLB.com is holding a charity auction with all kinds of memorabilia. Check it out. NPB Tracker takes a look at Japanese closer Hitoki Iwase, who should draw plenty of interest from MLB teams this winter. Trading Greg Maddux to the Dodgers is still possible, though unlikely. There's also word that the Padres "tested the trade value" of Cla Meredith last week. Livan Hernandez is expected to clear waivers today. We know the Rockies have discussed him internally, and Buster Olney speculates the Mets might be interested. The D'Backs are...

2:50pm: Stark says Ohman's probably staying put despite interest from ten teams. 2:39pm: Buster Olney says the Phillies will probably come up empty on a lefty reliever. 2:02pm: Rob Bradford of the Boston Herald says the Braves asked for a pitching prospect for Ohman, and the Red Sox passed. Rumor roundup... ESPN's Buster Olney implies that another website backdates timestamps in an attempt to fake scoops. I was following the Mark Teixeira rumors like a hawk; I gave the scoop to ESPN's Jayson Stark with an assist to MLB.com's Lyle Spencer. Joe Christensen says Orioles second baseman Brian Roberts is not available. MLB.com's Mark Bowman guesses Will Ohman will land with the Cardinals. He also puts the odds of a Mark Kotsay deal at 50%. With Mark Teixeira out of the picture, Diamondbacks GM Josh Byrnes doesn't expect to make any more trades. Will Carroll says the Dodgers had...

ESPN's Jayson Stark has been burning up the phone lines today. New blog posts can be found here and here. Brian Fuentes and Damaso Marte are off the market, but lefty relievers remain plentiful. The Cubs would like to move Scott Eyre, perhaps to an AL club like the Rays, Red Sox, or Tigers. Eyre is in the last year of a three-year contract and can block trades to ten clubs. The Orioles would like to pry a young shortstop loose if they are to trade George Sherrill. Erick Aybar, Maicer Izturis, and Jason Donald are names of interest, but...

Rounding up rumors and links from the weekend... SI.com's Jon Heyman says the Mariners are asking the Mets for Jon Niese for Raul Ibanez. Not likely. ESPN's Buster Olney says the Braves would require Conor Jackson from the D'Backs in a Mark Teixeira deal, but Arizona is not biting. Another quick hit from Olney: the White Sox are surveying the relief market in the wake of Scott Linebrink's shoulder injury. Several readers have written in about Phillies' lefty J.A. Happ being pulled early from a Triple A start (2.2 scoreless innings) with no sign of injury. Something to keep an...

Random rumors for this evening... ESPN's Jerry Crasnick reports that the Rays have contacted Geoff Jenkins' agent. They're eyeing him to replace Delmon Young in right field. Cubs lefty Scott Eyre exercised his $3.8MM player option for 2008. Terrmel Sledge never quite caught on in the U.S., so he's headed to Japan. I thought he was a sleeper entering 2007 as he'd posted a .985 OPS in Triple A in '06. The Yorvit Torrealba deal is official at two years and $7.25MM with a $4MM mutual option for 2010. Mutual options never get exercised by both sides so that doesn't..

Here's an interesting article from the Yahoo columnist that includes his selections for most overpaid players so far this year. Some of the blurbs are downright painful, like the reminder that Jason Kendall is earning more than $13M for this year's "production." I bring it up because overpaid players are so often a source of trade rumors on a thin market. After all, do you think it would take much to pry Kendall away from the A's? Shea Hillenbrand away from the Angels? It seems that clubs falling in the standings with money to burn (Yankees, anyone?) can always take..

As has been reported in many places, the Cubs inked Scott Eyre today to a two-year deal with an option for the third year. It's one of the first free agent signings, and Eyre will certainly solidify the Cubs' pen. If you think $3MM+ per year is a little much for a lefty reliever with a 4.52 career ERA, you're probably right. The Cubs are paying a premium for the safer choice by signing the 33 year-old. The deal still looks to be better than the three year pact Hendry gave to Mike Remlinger. Eyre should have at least one..
