Danks Brothers Leave Boras

By Tim Dierkes | June 9, 2008 at 3:34pm CDT

According to Mark Gonzales of the Chicago Tribune, John and Jordan Danks have left the Scott Boras Corporation in favor of Jeff Berry.  Gonzales notes that Berry represents Mark Buehrle and Josh Fields as well.

This development may make a long-term deal for John Danks more likely.  The 23 year-old southpaw is in the midst of a breakout year with a 3.13 ERA through 74.6 innings.  Historically, the White Sox haven’t been huge fans of Boras.

Danks will be eligible for arbitration in 2010.  The going rate for a good young pitcher’s three arb years is around $14MM, sometimes with a club option on the third.  Several years ago the Sox signed Buehrle to a three-year deal covering his arb years plus an option on his first of free agency.

Esteban Loaiza Signs With White Sox

By Tim Dierkes | June 4, 2008 at 5:56pm CDT

Esteban Loaiza is back with the White Sox, this time as a reliever.  I believe ESPN 1000’s Bruce Levine had the scoop once again.

Loaiza, 36, pitched in seven games for the Dodgers this year before being designated for assignment to make room for Clayton Kershaw.  Loaiza is back under pitching coach Don Cooper, who helped him win 21 games in ’03.

Draft Roundup

By Tim Dierkes | June 3, 2008 at 9:42am CDT

Today’s draft links.

  • Rany Jazayerli looks at possibilities for the Royals at #3.  He hopes they don’t take Eric Hosmer.
  • MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo has new projections for the top 30.  He’s switched the Orioles from Brian Matusz to Aaron Crow at #4, among other changes.
  • Keith Law has tons of good stuff…the Giants are eyeing Gordon Beckham, the Reds are considering Brett Lawrie, Jason Castro could go to the White Sox, the Dodgers like Zach Collier, and much more.
  • Ken Davidoff is hearing that the Padres are in on Brett Wallace and the Twins like Christian Friedrich.
  • Pedro Alvarez would be honored to be picked by the Pirates.  Dejan Kovacevic continues to say they’re leaning that way.
  • I am considering live-blogging Thursday’s draft, posting each pick here as soon as it’s announced (you would not have to refresh).  Would that be helpful?

Rosenthal’s Latest: Padilla, Greinke, Hatteberg

By Tim Dierkes | June 3, 2008 at 9:27am CDT

Let’s discuss Ken Rosenthal’s lastest column.

  • There’s some chatter that the ’09 draft class will be weak.  This could motivate teams to trade their impending free agent stars this July rather than collect compensation picks.
  • Mets pitching coach Rick Peterson has "fallen out of favor with some in the organization."  Rosenthal believes he’d be a hot commodity if fired.
  • The Rangers are open to trading Vicente Padilla, as you’d expect.  We’ve heard some crazy things about the asking price.
  • While the Royals don’t seem to consider Zack Greinke untouchable, they’d have to be bowled over to trade him.
  • The Yanks probably don’t have room for Ben Broussard, and the Orioles could swoop in and sign him if he’s granted free agency this month.
  • Look for Scott Hatteberg to become a free agent today; interest appears to be tepid.
  • The Florida teams are willing to spend money for midseason upgrades.  They’re understandably reluctant to trade prospects.
  • Doesn’t seem like Orlando Cabrera will be signing long-term with the White Sox.

Changes In Store For White Sox Offense?

By Tim Dierkes | June 2, 2008 at 9:23am CDT

White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen vented about his offense yesterday, saying that he expects GM Kenny Williams to do something about it by Tuesday.  But when the Chicago Tribune spoke to Williams, he was much calmer than his manager.

The Trib’s Mark Gonzales says A.J. Pierzynski, Jermaine Dye, Carlos Quentin, Orlando Cabrera, and Alexei Ramirez are probably safe.  A Tribune poll asks Sox fans what should be done: Fire hitting coach Greg Walker, bench Nick Swisher, trade for a hitter, drop Paul Konerko and Jim Thome in the lineup, or clone Carlos Quentin.

Realistically the Sox could probably wait Thome and Swisher’s slumps out and give Konerko a break by putting him on the DL.  Josh Fields might be able to come up and help.  And Walker probably becomes the "sacrificial lamb," as South Side Sox puts it.

Odds and Ends: Posada, Uribe, Wise, Red Sox

By Sarah Green | May 31, 2008 at 4:39pm CDT

Today’s links…

  • Jorge Posada could rejoin the Yankees as early as Wednesday (a few reports suggested Tuesday). Kat O’Brien of Newsday says the Yanks will hold on to both Jose Molina and Chad Moeller for "a while" after Posada returns, but as Peter Abraham points out on the LoHud Yankees blog, the Yankees have a real need for a set-up man now that Joba Chamberlain is starting.
  • Juan Uribe has been activated from the 15-day DL, and although Ozzie Guillen said he wasn’t guaranteed  playing time, they had to make room on the roster nonetheless.  DeWayne Wise was designated for assigment.
  • The news that Clay Buchholz has been optioned to Pawtucket comes as a shock to yours truly, but it underscores just how much starting pitching the Red Sox have right now, even with Daisuke Matsuzaka currently on the 15-day DL. Free agent pickup Bartolo Colon has worked out so far as a low-risk, high-reward signing. They’ve also got a good spot-starter in Justin Masterson, currently in Double A. And as if that weren’t enough, Curt Schilling could start throwing off a mound June 6. The odd man out could bring something useful in a trade. Just idle speculation, and I know there’s no such thing as too much pitching…but the Red Sox do have some holes to fill.

Mayo’s Latest: Alvarez, Orioles, Cashner

By Tim Dierkes | May 29, 2008 at 8:57pm CDT

MLB.com’s Jonathan Mayo has some draft tidbits tonight.

  • The idea has been floated that the Rays could draft Pedro Alvarez with an eye on moving Evan Longoria to second base down the road.  Alvarez’s position really shouldn’t be a concern – Carlos Pena might be gone by the time he’s ready.  Mayo’s heard buzz that the Rays have narrowed it down to Alvarez or Buster Posey, despite what Tim Beckham’s dad said.
  • Standard speculation is that the O’s are looking at Brian Matusz and Justin Smoak, but Mayo’s heard there might be a non-Beckham dark horse.
  • The White Sox have Smoak, Yonder Alonso, and perhaps Andrew Cashner on their radar at #8.

Odds and Ends: Pokey, Lowe, Boss

By Tim Dierkes | May 26, 2008 at 10:42am CDT

Before you fire up the grill, check out these links.

  • Dayn Perry has an enjoyable series at Baseball Prospectus called Mock Blockbuster.  He proposes trades that would benefit both teams.  His latest: Greg Maddux and Brian Giles for Jordan Schafer.
  • Rays Index wonders whether Eric Hinske or Gabe Gross could be expendable once Willy Aybar returns.
  • Joe Capozzi remembers Mike Piazza’s five game stint as a Marlin.
  • Pokey Reese sighting!
  • Ned Colletti told struggling free-agent-to-be Derek Lowe the Dodgers aren’t slamming the door on him coming back.
  • The Red Sox signed an Australian teen named Boss Moanaroa.
  • Athletics Nation chats with Billy Beane.
  • Jerry Reinsdorf hasn’t ruled out re-signing Joe Crede after the season.
  • R.I.P. Geremi Gonzalez.  I remember him as a bright spot on the ’97 Cubs.  I mailed him a baseball card for an autograph, and it came back signed.
