Molony’s Latest: Francoeur, Bay, Blalock

By Tim Dierkes | July 24, 2008 at 12:31pm CDT

MLB.com’s Jim Molony has a new column up.

  • The Braves will listen to offers for Jeff Francoeur and Will Ohman, and maybe Mark Teixeira if the Braves struggle in the next week.  The Royals are said to be interested in Francoeur.  Mike Gonzalez is unavailable.
  • The Braves have scouted Jason Bay and Xavier Nady, in case they decide to become buyers.
  • The Phillies had an exec scouting the Pirates recently.  The Phils are looking for a lefty reliever.  The Phillies also may be looking at relievers on the Jays and Orioles.
  • Molony rattles off Freddy Garcia suitors: Astros, Cardinals, Phillies, Rangers, Red Sox, Royals, Tigers, Mets, White Sox and Yankees.  The Royals might be a new one.
  • At least five teams are in on Casey Blake, including the Twins.  However the Twins seem to prefer Hank Blalock.  I like the Blalock idae for the Twins.
  • Molony sees A.J. Burnett staying put.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Teixeira, Burnett, Sherrill

By Tim Dierkes | July 24, 2008 at 9:18am CDT

Here’s the latest from Ken Rosenthal, who should probably take a vacation in August.

  • The D’Backs inquired on Mark Teixeira, but a trade is unlikely.  Tex might be the best available hitter, as Matt Holliday seems likely to stay put.
  • The Rockies scouted Nick Adenhart’s last start.  The Angels have more interest in Brian Fuentes than Holliday.
  • Tons of scouts converged on Camden Yards last night to watch A.J. Burnett and George Sherrill pitch (those hoping to see Sherrill were disappointed).  The Cardinals, Phillies, Yankees, Brewers, Marlins, Dodgers, and Tigers all had scouts there to watch at least one of the pitchers.
  • Rosenthal says trade interest in Burnett "remains minimal," as teams fear the pitcher’s contract.
  • The Orioles are taking a look at the Brewers’ Triple A team, but it is believed that they are reluctant to part with more prospects.
  • The A’s chose first baseman Chris Carter over Emilio Bonifacio in the Dan Haren trade.

Phillies Scouting Burnett?

By Tim Dierkes | July 23, 2008 at 8:22pm CDT

Let’s check in with the Phillies.

  • Robert MacLeod notes the presence of the Phillies’ director of Major League scouting at A.J. Burnett’s start tonight in Baltimore.  Would the Phillies add another starter?
  • Jim Salisbury talked to Phils GM Pat Gillick about the rumored Matt Holliday blockbuster.  Gillick rolled his eyes at the rumor.
  • In general, Gillick seems higher on catching prospect Lou Marson than pitching prospect Carlos Carrasco.
  • Gillick’s top target is a left-handed reliever, with a bat on the radar as well.  Some kind of acquisition is a "good possibility."

Heyman’s Latest: Nady, Teixeira, Sherrill

By Tim Dierkes | July 23, 2008 at 3:59pm CDT

Jon Heyman is cranking out a lot of rumorage.  Here’s his latest.

  • The price has dropped a tad on Xavier Nady, as the Pirates have become more interested in moving him.
  • The Braves still might trade Mark Teixeira right before the deadline, and Heyman thinks they can easily beat two draft choices.
  • Many teams scouted George Sherrill recently: the Marlins, Dodgers, Cardinals, Phillies, and Brewers.
  • Some execs "expressed annoyance" at the D’Backs underpaying for Jon Rauch.
  • Heyman says the Yankees are looking for catching, though Peter Abraham doesn’t agree.
  • The Twins, Giants, and Dodgers have interest in Hank Blalock, who has a $6.2MM option for ’09.

Odds and Ends: Bedard, Hudson, Inoa, Varitek

By Tim Dierkes | July 23, 2008 at 1:28pm CDT

Let’s dig through today’s links.

  • Cork Gaines takes a look at the Rays most likely to be traded.
  • According to Ken Davidoff, the Rockies have been scouting Yankees pitching prospect Humberto Sanchez.  He’d be a more reasonable return for Brian Fuentes.
  • Erik Bedard’s MRI came out clean, but it’s still hard to see him in a big league game before August.
  • Dan Haren used to follow every trade rumor on the Internet, but Justin Duchscherer doesn’t monitor the hot stove buzz.
  • Shane Victorino is aware of the rumors, but wants to stay in Philly.
  • With Emilio Bonifacio gone, Scott Bordow thinks the D’Backs should try to sign Orlando Hudson.  Bordow would only offer $8MM a year though.
  • Paul Hoynes looks at the Indians’ areas of need for the offseason.
  • Peter Abraham doesn’t expect the Yankees to pursue a catcher.
  • Melissa Segura of SI.com writes about Michael Inoa’s buscon.
  • Patrick Newman profiles Kenshin Kawakami, who should be quite popular this winter.
  • Buster Olney expects Jason Varitek to feel a ripple effect from Jorge Posada’s injury.  His sources expect the Red Sox to offer Varitek one or two years at $6-8MM per.
  • MLB.com is looking for a fan to guest host their show The Dish.

Heyman’s Latest: Holliday, Teixeira, Burnett, Blake

By Tim Dierkes | July 22, 2008 at 10:19pm CDT

10:19pm: Angels GM Tony Reagins laughed at Charley Walters’ Teixeira rumor, blaming it on…"those bloggers."

11:16am: The latest from SI.com’s Jon Heyman.

  • The Rockies and Braves will wait until right before the July 31st deadline to decide whether to trade Matt Holliday and Mark Teixeira.  The Rox have been more active calling around about Holliday, though.  Heyman notes that Rockies GM Dan O’Dowd has spoken to the Mets, Angels, Phillies, and other teams about him.  The Rockies are seven games out, while the Braves are six back.
  • The Braves are reportedly making a list of trading partners for Tex, including the Red Sox, Angels, Rays, and D’Backs.
  • Charley Walters has a rumor: Teixeira to the Angels for Robb Quinlan and Brandon Wood.
  • The Yankees haven’t even considered signing Barry Bonds, despite the Hideki Matsui injury.
  • Heyman spoke to a "Yankees person" who is fearful of A.J. Burnett’s contract.  I could see an acquiring team pushing for more certainty by buying out or guaranteeing the contract.
  • Heyman considers Manny Ramirez’s $20MM option for ’09 a bargain.  For me, it’s not nearly as clear-cut.
  • Omar Minaya is "especially" a fan of Cleveland’s Casey Blake.  He would be a great fit for the Mets.
  • Heyman is still hearing the rumor about the Mariners trying to lure Pat Gillick for an upper management position next year.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Fuentes, Sherrill, Nady, Kemp, Guthrie

By Tim Dierkes | July 22, 2008 at 12:43pm CDT

New Rosenthal.  Let’s take a look.

  • Rosenthal says the Marlins are in on Brian Fuentes and other top relievers, and they’re more focused on bullpen help than a catcher.  The Marlins’ interest in Fuentes was first reported by the Denver Post’s Troy E. Renck on July 9th.
  • Sources tell Rosenthal that the Brewers aren’t likely to pay up for a top reliever like George Sherrill.  Rosenthal considers the Angels the best fit for Sherrill, but doesn’t say whether they’re actually interested.
  • The Braves probably won’t discuss Tim Hudson; they’ll need him for next year.
  • Rosenthal wonders whether the Phillies will entertain trades for Brett Myers in the offseason.
  • The Phillies inquired on some interesting hitters: Matt Holliday, Xavier Nady, and Matt Kemp.
  • The Rockies asked the Orioles about Jeremy Guthrie, but he’s not available.
  • The Mets may not consider Casey Blake even of a difference-maker, though Blake is popular on the trade market.  The Rays are one team looking at him.

Pirates Rumors: Wilson, Bay, Nady, Marte, Grabow

By Tim Dierkes | July 21, 2008 at 3:45pm CDT

Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette has the latest Pirates hot stove chatter.

  • The Pirates are not opposed to creating a hole at shortstop for the rest of the year by trading Jack Wilson.  They would just need the right return.  Teams are still calling on Wilson, with the Dodgers confirmed and the Tigers possible.
  • A Jason Bay deal seems less likely – the Pirates’ price is high for their star.
  • Xavier Nady and Damaso Marte continue to draw interest, with John Grabow in the mix as well.  Nady or Marte would require two prospects each.  Nady’s suitors are the Rays, Mets, Yankees, and Braves.  Marte has roughly a dozen suitors.
  • Ed Price of the Newark Star-Ledger says the injury to Hideki Matsui led to heightened interest from the Yankees in Nady and Bay.  They’re also in on Marte and Grabow.  The Bucs aren’t interested in Melky Cabrera.
  • Interesting stuff in this John Perrotto article found via DRays Bay.  He names the Red Sox, Tigers, Mets, Yankees, Phillies, Cardinals, and Rays as teams interested in Marte.  The Tigers, Phillies, and Cardinals also have an eye on Grabow.
  • Perrotto runs through all kinds of names of interest to the Pirates: Anthony Reyes, Chris Duncan, Jeff Larish, Matt Joyce, Ross Ohlendorf, Brent Lillibridge, Brandon Jones, Jeff Niemann, Jon Niese, Eddie Kunz, and Bobby Parnell.

Odds and Ends: Mets, Cardinals, Phillies, Tigers

By Tim Dierkes | July 21, 2008 at 12:49pm CDT

Today’s links.

  • Mets manager Jerry Manuel expects a move, most likely for a left fielder.
  • Baseball Prospectus’ Kevin Goldstein wrote Saturday about the remaining unsigned draft picks.  BP is free for all this week, by the way.
  • Cardinals GM John Mozeliak faces a tough situation – he doesn’t have much time before the trade deadline to determine what Chris Carpenter and Adam Wainwright will contribute.
  • Don McKee believes the Phillies should sell the farm for Matt Holliday and Brian Fuentes.
  • Jon Paul Morosi notes that the Tigers might be able to trade Ivan Rodriguez in August.  He also says that Edgar Renteria’s ’09 option is for $12MM, not $11MM as was previously reported.
  • Jacob Jackson thinks the Athletics should trade most of their remaining chips for one player: Colby Rasmus.

Week in Review

By Steve Adams | July 20, 2008 at 5:19pm CDT

Another week in the history books! Here’s a look back from July 13-19:

  • The Phillies acquired Joe Blanton from the A’s for a package of three minor leaguers: Adrian Cardenas, Josh Outman, and Matthew Spencer. Cardenas and Outman were the Phils’ #2 and #4 prospects. Personally, that seems like a lot to bring a pitcher who’s already struggling to a much smaller park. Blanton is a much better pitcher than he’s showed this season, however.
  • Francisco Rodriguez will test the free-agent market this offseason. I don’t think anyone would be surprised to see K-Rod sign a record-setting contract for a reliever.
  • The Yankees signed Richie Sexson.
  • Francisco Liriano – or at least his agent – is not pleased that the Twins still have him in AAA. The Twins won’t blame Liriano for the investigation. Upsetting a player who’s that young and that talented seems like a bad idea to me…
  • The Padres traded Tony Clark to the Diamondbacks for minor leaguer Evan Scribner. The D’Backs have looked like they can use all the help they can get lately.
  • A.J. Burnett likes Toronto and doesn’t want to be traded. My advice: Don’t talk to Chicago reporters anymore, A.J.
  • Tim updated the third base and second base markets.
  • Erik Bedard’s injury looks like it will keep him in Seattle. And if you don’t believe me yet, here’s another one for you.
  • The Twins balked at Seattle’s asking price for Adrian Beltre. And considering they asked for one of Scott Baker, Nick Blackburn, Glen Perkins, or Kevin Slowey as well as other minor league prospects, can you blame them?
