Rockies Rumors: Embree, Shouse, Taveras, Atkins

By Tim Dierkes | November 26, 2008 at 11:40am CDT

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has the latest on the Rockies.

Manager Clint Hurdle says the Rockies are focused on adding pitching, particularly in the bullpen.  On the radar: Aaron Heilman, Alan Embree, Joe Beimel, and Brian Shouse.  Yesterday Joel Sherman said the Mets balked at the idea of swapping Heilman and Pedro Feliciano for Huston Street.

Renck adds that the Reds and White Sox remain interested in outfielder Willy Taveras.  On November 11th, Tracy Ringolsby said the Reds were not interested in Taveras despite reports.  As for Garrett Atkins, Renck believes the market will take shape after Casey Blake signs.

Mets Rumors: K-Rod, Fuentes, Vazquez, Garland

By Tim Dierkes | November 24, 2008 at 9:51am CDT

The latest on the Mets.

  • Joel Sherman believes the Brewers could interfere with the Mets’ attempts to sign Brian Fuentes or Francisco Rodriguez.
  • Ben Shpigel of the New York Times wrote this weekend that the Mets don’t appear likely to dabble in the second-tier relief market for pitchers like Juan Cruz or Joe Beimel.
  • Matthew Cerrone of MetsBlog passes along a John Harper article from the New York Daily News, adding his own commentary.
  • Harper believes the Mets may have to move on to Javier Vazquez, Jon Garland, and Edwin Jackson due to the high price tags on Boras clients Oliver Perez and Derek Lowe.

Dodgers Will Let Beimel Leave

By Tim Dierkes | November 21, 2008 at 9:57pm CDT

Dylan Hernandez of the L.A. Times talked to Joe Beimel’s agent Joe Sroba, who said he hasn’t been contacted by the Dodgers.  Sroba and Ned Colletti agree – the Dodgers are going in a different direction.

Beimel has drawn interest from the Mets, Reds, Tigers, Cardinals, and Rockies.  He’s probably fishing around for a three-year deal at this point.

Reds Hope To Add Lefty Reliever

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 20, 2008 at 11:07pm CDT

According to MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon, Reds GM Walt Jocketty wants to add a lefty to the Reds bullpen. Jocketty says the Reds considered Trever Miller before it became apparent that he was close to a deal with the Cardinals.

To build the bullpen back up, Jocketty said the Reds would consider Arthur Rhodes, Will Ohman, Darren Oliver, Dennys Reyes and Joe Beimel. Cincinnati could use a reliever since ex-Red Jeremy Affeldt signed with the Giants earlier in the week.

The Reds have talked about bringing back two of their own free agents, David Weathers and Mike Lincoln.

Teams are more interested in talking about trades now that some free agent price tags seem so high, according to Jocketty.

Odds and Ends: Teixeira, Giles, Beimel

By Tim Dierkes | November 19, 2008 at 3:00pm CDT

Links for Wednesday…

  • You can hear me on Lenny Melnick’s radio show at about 7:15pm CST.
  • The Marlins could be an interesting long shot for Raul Ibanez, but he’d have to leave significant money on the table.
  • Indians manager Eric Wedge really wants the team to bring in a closer.
  • George King likes Jason Giambi for the Rays; Cork Gaines imagines the negotiations.
  • Jesse Spector talking to Brewers GM Doug Melvin, who wasn’t in a revealing mood.
  • Tony Massarotti expects the Red Sox to make a huge offer to Mark Teixeira.
  • Padres outfielder Brian Giles doesn’t expect to be traded this winter.  If the team is in the tank next summer he might approve a deal, perhaps contingent on a contract extension.
  • Jacob Jackson says Kevin Towers has handled the Jake Peavy negotiations poorly so far.
  • Former Reds GM Wayne Krivsky could end up in Baltimore’s front office.
  • Bernie Williams is still not ready to retire.
  • Derrick Goold believes the Cardinals have $17-21MM to spend.
  • At least six clubs are in on Joe Beimel.  The Tigers are one, while the Cardinals, Rockies, and Mets may be others.

Tigers Interested In Beimel

By Alex Walsh | November 18, 2008 at 5:34pm CDT

Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press reports that the Tigers are interested in LHP Joe Beimel, according to Beimel’s agent.

Biemel, 31, posted a 2.02 ERA for the Dodgers in 2008. He’s only allowed one home run over the past two seasons, while pitching a combined 116.1 innings. However, he did give up 50 hits in 49 innings last year.

Morosi mentions that the Tigers are also in the hunt for a closer, making it clear that Beimel isn’t the answer for the 9th inning in Detroit. Darren Oliver and Arthur Rhodes also appear on the Tigers’ short list of interesting free agent relievers.

Giants Interested In Beimel

By Tim Dierkes | November 17, 2008 at 10:36am CDT

On Friday evening, MLB.com’s Chris Haft revealed that the Giants have "sincere" interest in free agent lefty Joe Beimel.  Beimel, 32 in April, is probably in line for a three-year, $12MM deal.  Remarkably, he allowed just one home run (to Carlos Beltran) over 116.3 innings the last two seasons.  Beimel has also been linked to the Cardinals, Rockies, and Mets.

Giants GM Brian Sabean has reportedly expressed varying degrees of interest in many other free agents, including Rafael Furcal, Casey Blake, Bob Howry, Juan Cruz, Manny Ramirez, Mark Teixeira, and C.C. Sabathia.

Rosenthal’s Latest: Peavy, Teixeira, Burnett

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | November 15, 2008 at 9:54am CDT

Ken Rosenthal’s got an interesting new column up.

  • Now that talks with the Braves have ended for the time being, Padres GM Kevin Towers is talking with the Yankees about Jake Peavy. The Yankees have had “numerous discussions” with the Padres, even though they just offered C.C. Sabathia a contract and are still considering A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe.
  • Peavy’s agent Barry Axelrod said that “the Angels probably would be more appealing” geographically, but “from other perspectives, they might be less appealing” than other teams
  • Rosenthal talked with an agent who said that the Angels could wait a week or 10 days before making Mark Teixeira a “knockout offer” with a deadline.
  • Even though the Yankees traded for Nick Swisher, they could still have interest in Teixeira if he’s willing to consider a shorter contract of four or five years for top dollar.
  • Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi knows that Toronto “won’t be the highest bidder” for A.J. Burnett. Ricciardi hopes that Burnett likes Toronto enough to re-sign.
  • The Indians are considering going after both Juan Cruz and Jeremy Affeldt instead of an experienced closer.
  • The Phillies and Giants could also bid on Cruz.
  • The Cardinals will have interest in Affeldt and Joe Beimel as they try to strengthen their bullpen.

Odds and Ends: Perez, Torres, Beimel

By Tim Dierkes | November 14, 2008 at 11:21am CDT

Links for Friday, with an unplanned emphasis on relievers…

  • The Tigers and Trevor Hoffman may be a match.  Hoffman’s agent closed the door on the Padres.
  • The Royals brought Mike Arbuckle aboard, formerly of the Phillies.
  • The Nationals have interest in re-signing Aaron Boone and Odalis Perez.  MLB.com’s Bill Ladson gives it a 50-50 chance.  The Nats re-signed infielder Pete Orr, who could earn $600K.
  • The Brewers picked up Salomon Torres’ 2009 option, more of a procedural move than anything.
  • The Marlins have an eye on minor league free agent Zach McClellan.
  • Ken Davidoff makes contract and destination predictions for top free agents.  K-Rod, Juan Cruz, and Russ Springer to the Cardinals for a combined $73MM?
  • The Rockies have Joe Beimel and Jeremy Affeldt on the radar, among others.
  • The New York Daily News has a cool free agent tracker.

Mets Revamping The Bullpen

By Tim Dierkes | November 7, 2008 at 1:11pm CDT

The Mets’ primary focus this winter is to completely revamp their bullpen.  Ken Davidoff and Joel Sherman outline Plan A: free agents.  Names in the mix: Francisco Rodriguez, Brian Fuentes, Kerry Wood, Joe Beimel, Juan Cruz, and Chad Cordero.  Sherman figures the Mets are in a good position because most of the other big-market teams aren’t looking for a closer.

Plan B: trades.  The Mets have already discussed Bobby Jenks with the White Sox.  J.J. Putz, Huston Street, and Kevin Gregg are the other names.  It all depends on how much young talent Omar Minaya wants to sacrifice.

As a corollary to Plan B, the Mets want to ship out Pedro Feliciano, Aaron Heilman, and Scott Schoeneweis.  They hope to clear payroll and/or bring in other relievers in these trades.  Davidoff says Heilman has plenty of admirers.

Another note from Sherman – the Mets "could be interested" in Jason Varitek if the price comes down but Varitek doesn’t re-sign with Boston.  In another article, Davidoff lays out Plans A, B, and C for both the Mets and Yankees.
