D’Backs Rumors: Clark, Punto, Rhodes, Unit

By Tim Dierkes | December 8, 2008 at 8:10pm CDT

8:10pm: Piecoro says the D’Backs don’t want to trade Snyder; in fact, they’d like to extend him.

Piecoro notes talks with Eddie Guardado, but they didn’t go far.  And Japanese lefty Ken Takahashi is not on Arizona’s radar.

7:20pm: The D’Backs have discussed a contract with Tony Clark for ’09, says Gilbert.

6:20pm: Rosenthal says the D’Backs want to trade the more pricey Snyder to clear a path for Montero.  They could then ink a Gregg Zaun type to back him up.

3:30pm: Gilbert says the D’Backs have a one-year offer out to Loretta.

3:18pm: MLB.com’s Steve Gilbert says the D’Backs have not resumed talks with Randy Johnson.

12:12pm: Piecoro says talks between the D’Backs and Mark Loretta have advanced in recent days.  They’ve made a "significant overture" according to Loretta’s agent.

2:26am: Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic has the latest on the Diamondbacks, in blog posts here and here.

  • Piecoro dissects the D’Backs’ thought process behind their decision not to offer arbitration to Type A free agent Adam Dunn.  He notes that their rumored two-year offer to Dunn was "more of an exploratory offer, nothing formal."  They’ll stay in touch with Dunn in case the market is not to his liking.
  • Free agent targets: Nick Punto, Arthur Rhodes, and the aforementioned Joe Beimel.
  • Punto is one of many candidates for second base.  Ramon Vazquez was the top target, but he was two guaranteed years rather than one with an option.
  • Piecoro wonders if the D’Backs might now be able to scrape together another $3MM or so for Randy Johnson, given the Dunn draft pick savings and Brandon Lyon’s decision to decline arb.

D’Backs Interested In Beimel

By Tim Dierkes | December 8, 2008 at 1:08am CDT

We can add a new name to the Joe Beimel sweepstakes: the Diamondbacks.  Jack Magruder of the East Valley Tribune says they’ve had talks with his agent.  Of course, Josh Byrnes is eyeing all kinds of free agent relievers now that Brandon Lyon declined arbitration.

The Tigers are another team known to be in on Beimel.

Odds and Ends: Teahen, Mastny, Clement

By Tim Dierkes | December 8, 2008 at 12:03am CDT

Sunday evening links…I will add to this post as needed.

  • Dejan Kovacevic describes what it’s like for a reporter at the Winter Meetings.
  • The Royals do not want to trade Mark Teahen.  They’ve received inquiries on Teahen, David DeJesus, Jose Guillen, and Billy Butler.  They mainly seem willing to move Guillen, which Jayson Stark reported earlier.
  • Patrick Newman of NPB Tracker passes along nuggets on Kenshin Kawakami and Koji Uehara.  He says the Angels contacted Kawakami’s agent, while the Tigers and Giants have been in touch with Uehara’s.
  • Newman also says the Yokohama BayStars acquired reliever Tom Mastny from the Indians.
  • Free agent infielder Nick Punto admitted to LEN3 that it’d be hard to leave the Twins.
  • John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus says the Pirates are "willing to take a flyer on free-agent local boy Matt Clement."  Clement may also consider Cleveland if they’ll have him.
  • Other teams are pulling ahead of the Rockies in the pursuit for free agent lefty Joe Beimel.  Nothing against Beimel, but it seems that every year one free agent lefty reliever is elevated beyond his true value.  It might be Beimel this year.
  • Jon Paul Morosi discusses trading Dontrelle Willis.
  • The Marlins figure to hang on to Dan Uggla.
  • Roch Kubatko says Orioles exec Mike Flanagan won’t be attending the Meetings, sparking speculation about his future with the team.

Cafardo’s Latest: Halladay, Hermida, Abreu

By Tim Dierkes | December 7, 2008 at 7:18pm CDT

Time for a look at the latest column from Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe.

  • Relievers on the Tigers’ radar: Trevor Hoffman, David Weathers, Arthur Rhodes, and Joe Beimel.
  • Blue Jays J.P. Ricciardi is frank: "We will not trade Roy Halladay."
  • Marlins right fielder Jeremy Hermida is said to interest the Reds, Rays, and Giants.  John Perrotto says the Rays have inquired on Hermida.
  • Cafardo believes the Dodgers will turn to Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell, or Jermaine Dye if they fail to re-sign Manny Ramirez.
  • Cafardo likes the Angels and Brewers as dark horses for Jake Peavy.
  • Cafardo says not to discount the possibility of the Nationals signing Ken Griffey Jr.

Odds and Ends: Teixeira, Izturis, Gaudin

By Tim Dierkes | December 4, 2008 at 3:30pm CDT

Links for Thursday…

  • Check out this week’s minor league transactions.  Some familiar names were signed.
  • The Red Sox officially announced the signing of Junichi Tazawa.
  • J.C. Bradbury likes the Dustin Pedroia contract.
  • Sox Machine has parting words for Javier Vazquez, whose trade to the Braves was officially announced today.  ESPN’s Keith Law tells you all you need to know about the players involved in the deal.  Tyler Flowers is the key, Santos Rodriguez the wild card.
  • The Rockies’ talks for lefty reliever Joe Beimel continue. In another article, Patrick Saunders looks at the team’s wish list.
  • Rob Neyer believes teams are starting to figure out defensive evaluation, creating a weak market for lumbering LF/1B/DH types.
  • Jesse Spector spoke to Tigers GM Dave Dombrowski.
  • T.R. Sullivan says the Tigers’ talks for Rangers catcher Gerald Laird continue.
  • Larry Dobrow offers suggestions to fix the Reds.
  • Aaron Gleeman says the Twins have already missed several good opportunities to affordably improve their bullpen.
  • Viva El Birdos explains why the Cardinals should’ve offered arbitration to Russ Springer and Braden Looper.
  • Lee Jenkins provides insight into Mark Teixeira – the perfect baseball player and ideal Boras client.
  • Roch Kubatko says Cesar Izturis remains a strong possibility for the Orioles.
  • Fred Claire notes that Jack Zduriencik will always remember Russell Branyan as his first free agent signing.  Geoff Baker examines the Branyan signing and the Ken Griffey Jr. idea.
  • Paul Sullivan suggests Chad Gaudin is a non-tender candidate for the Cubs.  He’s set to get an arbitration raise on this year’s $1.775MM salary.

Talks Pick Up For Joe Beimel

By Tim Dierkes | December 3, 2008 at 6:23pm CDT

Looks like the relief market is starting to move.  MLB.com’s Jason Beck says talks for Joe Beimel have picked up in recent days, with the Tigers one of the remaining clubs.  Darren Oliver’s arbitration offer helped the market for Beimel.

Beck also notes that the Reds "supposedly had not engaged in talks as of Wednesday" for Beimel despite the team’s reported interest.  The Rockies may be in the mix though.

Reds Rumors: Gonzalez, Reyes, Beimel

By Tim Dierkes | December 3, 2008 at 12:09pm CDT

Let’s gather up the latest on the Reds.

  • John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer figures the Reds would like to add a young shortstop.  Alex Gonzalez was supposed to play winter ball but the plan changed.  The Reds still hope he’s ready for spring training.
  • Kerry Wood is not likely, but the Reds have an offer out to Arthur Rhodes and maintain interest in David Weathers after offering him arbitration.
  • MLB.com’s Mark Sheldon throws a few new lefties into the mix: Dennys Reyes and Joe Beimel.  Darren Oliver is not under consideration since he’d cost the Reds their second-round pick.  I imagine Oliver’s agent is hearing that from most teams.
  • Reds GM Walt Jocketty also continues to talk to the agents for Mike Lincoln and Jerry Hairston Jr., according to Sheldon.

Dodgers Offer Arb Only To Manny, Lowe, Blake

By Tim Dierkes | December 1, 2008 at 7:20pm CDT

The Dodgers’ numerous arb decisions are in, courtesy of MLB.com’s Ken Gurnick.  Manny Ramirez, Derek Lowe, and Casey Blake get offers.  Joe Beimel, Brad Penny, Jeff Kent, and Greg Maddux (all Type Bs) don’t.  The only real surprise here is Beimel, who earned less than $2MM this year and seemed worth the risk.

Rockies Rumors: Fuentes, Embree, Taveras

By Tim Dierkes | December 1, 2008 at 1:35pm CDT

Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post has a few Rockies tidbits today…

  • It deserves another mention – Brian Fuentes has scheduled a visit with the Mets.  If he signs there, the Rockies will add the Mets’ #25 pick to their own #11 pick in the first round while also snagging a sandwich pick.
  • The Rockies want two lefties, probably from the pool of Glendon Rusch, Alan Embree, Brian Shouse, and Joe Beimel.  Renck says the Tigers are aggressively pursuing Beimel, while Embree might have extra appeal if he can be had on a one-year deal.
  • The Rockies hope to trade Willy Taveras, while free agent Cory Sullivan could fit with the Marlins or D’Backs according to Renck.  The Rockies plan to use Ryan Spilborghs in center and perhaps re-sign Scott Podsednik as a reserve.

Perrotto’s Latest: Teixeira, Burnett, Wilson

By Nat Boyle | November 30, 2008 at 1:02pm CDT

John Perrotto of Baseball Prospectus has his Sunday article up. Let’s go through it:

  • The Angels may be willing to match the Yankees $140MM offer to CC Sabathia. They won’t offer 10 years to Mark Teixeira. If they can’t land Teixeira, they will consider Pat Burrell for first base.
  • A.J. Burnett is looking at the Blue Jays, Red Sox, Yankees, Braves, Orioles, and Phillies.
  • The Twins want a left-side infielder for Delmon Young, so they can open a spot for Denard Span in the starting lineup.
  • The Tigers are pursuing Jack Wilson from the Pirates and Matt Treanor from the Marlins. They are also putting high priority on signing Joe Beimel who’s getting interest from a number of teams.
  • The Dodgers will not re-sign Rafael Furcal for health reasons so the Giants, Athletics, and Reds are his most likely destinations.
  • The Cubs will need to offer more than Jason Marquis to the Royals for David DeJesus. If they can’t get it done, they’d sign Raul Ibanez over Bobby Abreu.
  • The Braves are interested in Javier Vazquez and Jermaine Dye…
  • The Reds need to offer more than Homer Bailey to get Dye.
  • The Mets are considering Jon Garland, Vazquez, Edwin Jackson, Andy Sonnanstine. The Rays want more than Aaron Heilman for either of their starters.
  • The Mets could soon become suitors for Manny Ramirez.
  • The Brewers could soon become suitors for Francisco Rodriguez.
  • The Astros are targeting Paul Bako and David Ross as backup catchers.
  • The Rockies are trying to find lefthanders, eyeing Alan Embree, Will Ohman, Brian Shouse, and Glendon Rusch.
