First off, my apologies for the confusion in my last post. Let's set the record straight about this Astros/White Sox thing. My source wasn't referring to the Astros' interest in Miguel Tejada, but rather Jose Contreras. Baltimore likes the righthander, but Houston covets him as well. The Sox are talking to the Astros currently, but have no interest in Brad Lidge. Their reasoning: they believe in the young, cheap Bobby Jenks. The Sox also have concerns about Lidge's future health after piling on the innings as well as his impending large salary. That all makes sense; the Sox have no..

Some more quality details on the possible Miguel Tejada trade: First issue: White Sox payroll. My source is saying that adding Tejada would not be a problem - the team's board of directors are willing to take the payroll up to $105 million. Should the Orioles accept one of their offers, they'll still have flexibility for more additions at the July trading deadline as needed. UPDATE: There was a miscommunication between my source and I about this deal. He was not telling me that the Astros were in on Tejada, but rather Jose Contreras. I'll go into more detail on..

A source close to a major sports representation firm has tipped me off to two offers the White Sox currently have on the table for shortstop Miguel Tejada. Two formal proposals have been given to the Orioles by Sox GM Kenny Williams. Williams set a drop dead date of December 31st given other clubs' outstanding offers for Tejada. Option 1: Jose Contreras, Juan Uribe, and one minor league prospect for Tejada. Option 2: Brandon McCarthy, Juan Uribe, 20 year-old southpaw Alex Woodson, and another minor leaguer for Tejada. In this scenario, the White Sox would get cash back from the..

Let's take a look at what some other sources are reporting today on the rumor front. Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post mentions that Marquis Grissom's agent said he will sign with the Cubs. When you look at Grissom's 2005, there's not much to like. He doesn't get on base and he's pushing 40. On the flip side, Grissom mashed lefties to the tune of .315/.356/.577 in 2004 and he'd make a great platoon partner for Jacque Jones. UPDATE: You probably assumed this, but I've verified with a reliable source that the Grissom deal is for one year and..

I've got the latest Cubs scoop tonight. This is thirdhand information originating from a baseball scout, but I do think it's legitimate. The source is telling me that the Cubs are close to signing Preston Wilson. It seems that the Tejada deal is dead and the Orioles have rejected the Cubs' offer. Cubs GM Jim Hendry is looking in another direction for some added power in the lineup, and Wilson is his type of player. By that, I mean that Wilson is an affordable outfielder with average to below average plate discipline. He's a career .264/.333/.478 hitter. The acquisition would..

A Bruce Levine radio report on ESPN Radio 1000 indicates that Jon Garland has re-signed with the White Sox for three years, $29MM. The contract is backloaded: $7MM in 2006, $10MM in 2007, and $12MM in 2008. The contract has a no-trade provision for 2006 only, so the Sox have flexibility if they don't want to be on the hook for the final $22MM. The deal is another excellent move by GM Kenny Williams. With any type of decent showing in 2006, Garland stood to command a five or six year deal averaging as much as $11MM annually. Perhaps the..

Gotham Baseball's Mark Healey has heard a massive trade rumor from "multiple independent baseball sources." Of course, it's subject to change, isn't close, and all the usual disclaimers. Here's the Cliff Notes version of it: "Mets would send Heilman and Matsui (and $5 million) to Tampa Bay for Lugo. Then New York would send Lugo, Kris Benson, Brian Bannister and Victor Diaz to Baltimore for Tejada, and then send Tejada to the Red Sox for Manny Ramirez." Let's stop right there. My opinion on each step of this possible deal: Aaron Heilman for Julio Lugo sounds like fair value to..

An emailer reports that the Cubs are awaiting word from the Orioles on this offer: Cubs get: Miguel Tejada, Erik Bedard Orioles get: Mark Prior, Rich Hill, Corey Patterson This proposal is on the table. The report comes from Bruce Levine on ESPN Radio 1000. The pros and cons of this deal have been debated endlessly on this site. To restate my opinion: this move works as a "win now" move. The Cubs would add something like seven wins, so they'd need some additional upgrades or players outplaying projections to be favored as the division winner. A couple of options..

The Rangers signed Kevin Millwood today to a four year deal with an option for the fifth year, the Dallas Fort Worth Star-Telegram reports. MSNBC is reporting that the deal is worth $60MM over five years and the fifth year vests based on innings pitched. The signing is vaguely reminiscent of the five-year pact given to Chan Ho Park after his stellar age 28 season. Upon joining Texas, Park saw his walk, home run, and hit rates shoot up dramatically. He pitched only 380 innings for the Rangers. The revamped Rangers rotation will include Millwood, Adam Eaton, Vicente Padilla, and..

FoxSports is confirming that Jason Johnson has indeed signed a one-year contract to pitch for the Indians. By acquiring Johnson and Paul Byrd, the Tribe now has a group of five starters that combined to pitch over 1000 innings in 2005. That depth makes the departure of Kevin Millwood a foregone conclusion. Getting a couple of decent starters for one and three years is a much smarter path than committing to five risky years of a pretty good starter in Millwood. The Indians definitely don't have a need for starting pitching anymore, so it seems that Coco Crisp will stay..

In the midst of my player projections for the 2006 Roto Authority Fantasy Baseball Guide, I realized just how stacked the Marlins are with young talent. If fire sales didn't leave fan bases in ruins, Florida's strategy of trading every veteran at once for top prospects could become a blueprint for success. Now, the Fish might still have a hard time topping .500 in 2006. But so did the Tigers, Mariners, and Giants in 2005, and those clubs spent a big chunk of change on free agents and old guys. As the signings get worse every year, I'm starting to..

It's well known that Baltimore Orioles CEO Peter Angelos is very mindful of players' health records, moreso than any other GM. It could have something to do with Angelos's past as a personal injury lawyer. Or it could be two massive free agent blunders made in the past by the Orioles: Scott Erickson and Albert Belle. The Orioles wasted many millions as the two players deteriorated. The Angelos mindset is center stage at the moment, as the health of Cubs starter Mark Prior is far from spotless. As I mentioned earlier, here's what Buster Olney had to say on the..

Believe it or not, there's a ton of stuff going on today that doesn't involve the words "Prior" or "Tejada." A tentative Troy Glaus trade has been reached. The Diamondbacks dumped Glaus and his contract on the Blue Jays for Orlando Hudson and Miguel Batista. Brandon Webb, far and away the most extreme groundball pitcher in baseball, benefits greatly from the addition of Hudson. Another effect is the breakup of a highly rated defensive infield, at least in the eyes of Dayn Perry. The Blue Jays now have a logjam of 1B/3B/DH guys, and Rosenthal speculates that Shea Hillenbrand is..

According to the emailers, the Cubs are waiting to hear back from the Orioles (Angelos will be involved) on this offer: Cubs receive Miguel Tejada and Erik Bedard for Mark Prior, Rich Hill, and Corey Patterson. Essentially, Patterson is a non-factor in discussing 2006 value. Hill would also not be likely to add much value to a Major League rotation next year. As I mentioned yesterday, this trade nets..

Ken Rosenthal's got Chicago buzzing: "The Cubs, aggressively pursuing a blockbuster trade for Orioles shortstop Miguel Tejada, are willing to part with a top starting pitcher, most likely right-hander Mark Prior, sources tell FOXSports.com." According to Rosenthal, the talks stalled when the Cubs insisted on receiving Erik Bedard and Tejada without surrendering Felix Pie or a top pitching prospect. A longshot three-way deal involving Manny Ramirez, Tejada, and Prior was also mentioned. As stated here back in November, Bedard is very much available. I can't possibly think of a better way for the Cubs to turn the Jacque Jones signing into a positive. If you sum up Byrnes and Jones' salaries, you'll be getting solid stats from RF for the price. Kevin Towers made a great trade today, acquiring promising youngsters Chris Young and Adrian Gonzalez (plus Terrmel Sledge) for Adam Eaton and Akinori Otsuka. I didn't think a deal was imminent yesterday, but I also didn't think Jon Daniels would surrender a comparable, younger pitcher in the trade. In what way is Adam Eaton better than Chris Young? Putting their numbers side by side, I'd say Young is already the preferable pitcher. Their strikeout rates are comparable, and Young's superior control results in fewer baserunners. Young's durability is an unknown, but it couldn't be much worse than Eaton's. Eaton's had..

Grady Little will have an extra infielder on his hands when Cesar Izturis returns, but that's not really a bad thing. The Dodgers have begun to craft a solid veteran lineup. At his best, Padilla went 14-11 with a 3.28 ERA for the 2002 Phillies. That year was marked by low home run and walk rates for Padilla. He's still only 28, and 2005 was an injury-plagued year. Triceps tendonitis and other maladies may have contributed..

Plenty of buzz going around about Roger Clemens entertaining new teams such as the Red Sox, Yankees, or Rangers for the 2006 season. According to my Astros source, however, Clemens is again choosing between the Astros and retirement. Houston Chronicle writer Brian McTaggart has confirmed that Brad Ausmus is very close to signing a two-year pact with the Astros. It's well known that Clemens does not want to pitch for any other catcher, and the Red Sox tried in vain to lure Ausmus out East. Boston was never really an option for Ausmus, who wants to be a starter and..

The always reliable Ken Rosenthal is reporting that Matt Morris is close to signing a deal with the Giants. This has been speculated for some time now, and I created a projection for Morris as a Giant about a month ago. I figured I'd try to get some more mileage out of that RotoAuthority post. New at RotoAuthority today is my Prince Fielder projection. Prince is nearly a lock for 30 HR, and a must-have in fantasy baseball. Finally, we've got new material at HoopsBuzz - seems that Ron Artest has demanded a trade

I first heard the Astros might consider trading Brad Lidge a few days ago, when Dayn Perry tossed it out there. Perry mentioned that Lidge could go to Atlanta, and here's what I said: "Could the Braves somehow emerge with the best closer on the market? One who no one even knew was on the market? I wouldn't put it past Schuerholz. I can't see Houston doing the deal for anything less than catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia or shortstop Elvis Andrus." I still feel that the Braves are the frontrunner. Lidge doesn't become a free agent until after the 2008 season,..

A couple of different sources are confirming the Cubs' interest in Miguel Tejada. According to an emailer, David Kaplan of WGN Radio spoke with two sources close to Miguel Tejada. The sources told Kaplan early Friday that Tejada would love to play for the Cubs and would welcome a trade. The Tribune Company owns both WGN and the Cubs. Several other emailers mentioned a Bruce Levine report on ESPN Radio 1000. According to Levine, there is major interest in Tejada by the Cubs and Jim Hendry has had talks with the Orioles front office already. John Stockstill is currently the..

This morning, I mentioned that Matt Morris could be considered Plan C for Walt Jocketty. Looks like it might be time for Plan D. Joe Strauss's article from the St. Louis Post-Dispatch today confirms the Cardinals' lowball offer to Morris of $13MM over two years with a $7MM option for the third. Strauss quoted Jocketty on agent Barry Axelrod's reaction to the offer: "If we don't get one of these guys we still feel we have a pretty strong rotation," Jocketty said. "We wanted to get a little depth; it might've allowed us to do some other things. We'll have..

Several different sources have recently mentioned the Dimaondbacks' interest in Corey Patterson. The rumor first surfaced in my inbox Thursday morning, and I put in a word to Jack Magruder of the East Valley Tribune. Magruder confirmed the rumor, saying that it might happen depending on who the Cubs would take. After further inquiries, Magruder revealed that the D'backs were reluctant to part with relievers after the Johnny Estrada trade thinned their 'pen. He also mentioned that Arizona will not part with Carlos Quentin, Conor Jackson, Stephen Drew, or other top prospects, which makes sense. Some have floated the idea..

Back on October 25th, I mentioned in my Top 50 Free Agents list that "if Damon and Lofton aren't available, Preston Wilson may frighteningly be the best option in CF" for the Yankees. At this point, it's starting to look like the Yankees won't try to acquire even a Wilson type for their vacancy. According to a source of mine just returning from the winter meetings, the Yankees don't like the CF market and didn't have the ammo to acquire Juan Pierre or even Joey Gathright. The club plans on shoving Bubba Crosby out there to start the season and..

Sadly for frustrated Cardinals fans, it's come to this: Plan C. A distant Plan C, at that. After falling short on #2 starter types A.J. Burnett and Javier Vazquez, Walt Jocketty confirmed his interest in good ol' Matt Morris. Jayson Stark quoting an anonymous GM yesterday about the Cardinals: "That's a team whose window to win may be closing. They'll still be good. But they're getting thinner, and they're getting older, and they're getting more vulnerable." This is undeniable. The Cards aren't packed with young talent in the pipeline, and a couple of stars like Jim Edmonds and Scott Rolen..

Chicago Sun-Times writer Chris De Luca has a few names he thinks would work for the Cubs. Said De Luca today: "It's too bad Wood's future is so murky. The Houston Astros, in need of pitching and always in the market for homegrown stars such as Wood, are listening to offers for center fielder Willy Taveras, the runner-up in National League Rookie of the Year voting. With the Astros showing more trust in Chris Burke during the postseason, Taveras has become a hot name on the trade market." While one Juan Pierre in the lineup has a chance of working,..

Thinking a Luis Gonzalez homecoming to the Cubs might be an adequate solution? The Cubs don't. I recently spoke to Daily Herald writer Bruce Miles, who told me that the Cubs have "no interest." Apparently, the Cubs are turned off by Gonzalez's weak arm being a part of their outfield defense. While a notch above Jeromy Burnitz, the 38 year-old Gonzalez is slipping offensively. His .459 SLG in 2005 was his worst since 1997. Gonzalez is known to be on the trading block along with Javier Vazquez and Shawn Green. Gonzalez is most notable for his face, which makes it..

I had received a few tips from readers about Miguel Tejada possibly being traded. I didn't print anything because I couldn't substantiate them. Turns out those readers were on target; today Tejada said, "I think the best thing will be a change of scenery." You can bet Tejada's proclamation will get the hot stove buzzing once again. It's a strange thing for Tejada to say, given that the Orioles have several months left to improve their team. He said that the Orioles "have not made any signings to strengthen the club." If I were Ramon Hernandez, I'd be slightly offended..

Today, the Red Sox sent shortstop Edgar Renteria and $11MM for third baseman Andy Marte. That's got to be a record for Martes traded in one day. I don't think it was a bad move by the Braves, considering that they'll have a decent shortstop for three years at less than half the price of Rafael Furcal. On the other hand, Marte has the potential be a star. I know, "potential" is a loaded word. But when a player hits .275/.372/.506 in Triple A at age 21, it screams "future star." Marte was ranked the best prospect in baseball by..

Two emailers just told me that Bruce Levine of ESPN Radio 1000 is reporting that the White Sox have dealt lefty reliever Damaso Marte for super-utility man Rob Mackowiak. For his career, the 30 year-old Marte is 14-14 with a 3.21 ERA in 303 innings. He's been tough to hit and strikes out many, but walks have always been a problem. In 2005, Marte walked a ridiculous 6.55 batters per nine innings. This will be a return to Pittsburgh for the southpaw. He was dealt for Matt Guerrier back in 2002. Mackowiak, a native of Oak Lawn, IL, can handle..

A wild rumor has surfaced on the A's page of MLB.com. According to the site: "Late Wednesday, another rumor popped up, with the Phillies said to have offered outfielder Bobby Abreu, catcher Mike Lieberthal and pitching prospect Gavin Floyd for lefty Barry Zito and catcher Jason Kendall." Lieberthal and Kendall had about equal value on the field in 2005. Comparing contracts, the catcher part of the deal is a big win for Oakland. Kendall's on the hook for $19MM through 2007, while Lieberthal is owed $7.5MM for 2006 only. So the A's come out a good $11.5MM ahead here, especially..

ESPN is reporting that Jim Bowden picked up Alfonso Soriano for the Nationals and sent Brad Wilkerson and Terrmel Sledge over to the Rangers. The trade is a pretty fair one by my off-the-cuff analysis. I'll probably have some player projections on RotoAuthority tomorrow, given that players are moving from an extreme pitchers' park to a home run haven. Once extra piece of information that we've managed to acquire contradicts a statement in the ESPN report. The Padres brought back Trevor Hoffman today, getting their customary home-town discount. The deal will pay Hoffman $6.75MM annually and the option on the third year is based on games finished. There's nothing wrong with this move, considering the price. Back in late October, Hoffman's agent was talking about $10MM a year. Hoffman is still a dominant reliever across his 50-60 innings, although Scott Linebrink could easily handle the 9th inning. The poor guy won't be a free agent until after the 2007 season, at which point he could get Kyle Farnsworth money

Ken Rosenthal continues to scoop the vast majority of trades going on at the winter meetings. This time, he's telling us that the Braves sent Johnny Estrada to the Diamondbacks for Lance Cormier and Oscar Villarreal. The Braves were dealing from a position of strength since Brian McCann is more than ready to take over full-time catching duty. The 21 year-old skipped Triple A and held up nicely in 180 Major League at-bats this year. He's not the defensive catcher that Estrada is, but he's not bad with the glove. You already know how I feel about Juan Pierre. What's the deal with the three pitchers the Cubs shipped over to get him? Renyel Pinto is a 23 year-old southpaw with a plus changeup and 94 mph fastball. While ranked the Cubs' 6th best prospect by Baseball America before the 2005 season, he's now dropped out of the top ten. If you look at Pinto's numbers the last couple of years, he's mastered Double A but can't crack Triple A. However, he's gotten only about 30 innings in Iowa as an opportunity. Pinto prevents home runs well and strikes people..

Just heard from my Mets source, who's out at Shea (not in Dallas). The Mets are apparently very interested in Barry Zito. Here are the details. The Barry Zito deal is contingent on the Mets shedding Kris Benson first. The Mets want Mike MacDougal and a prospect for Benson, while the Royals only want to give Jeremy Affeldt. It's not likely the Mets acquire both relievers. The Mets have talked to the A's about Zito, and Lastings Milledge will be included in any deal. Aaron Heilman is a possibility. Well, it's official - Juan Pierre will be playing center field for the Cubs in 2006. I reported this deal as done back on November 23rd, and I rightfully caught plenty of flak for it. So I immediately dialed up Jim Hendry's personal line and demanded that he deal two of five possible pitchers for Pierre so that I wouldn't look bad. Hendry complied, threw in Sergio Mitre, and here we are. (I'm kidding, obviously). I'll discuss Sergio Mitre, Ricky Nolasco, and Renyel Pinto in a separate post. Wow, I stepped out for a couple of hours and a billion trades/rumors occurred. Here's three, with more in-depth analysis to come tomorrow. Peter Gammons is saying the Dodgers are close to acquiring Alfonso Soriano for Jonathan Broxton. I suppose Soriano could take over at third base; he's yet to play a Major League game in the outfield. Broxton would fit well in either the starting rotation or the 'pen. The hefty right-hander split time between the roles at Double A Jacksonville in 2005. One of Broxton's specialties (besides the palmball) is limiting the home run, a trait that will..

Jason Michaels just can't get a break. He was kicked around the minors long enough to lose the "prospect" label, and then he was branded a part-time player despite out-hitting many regular center fielders. I touted Michaels in my recent Center Fielders With Potential article, noting his .380 OBP in 808 Major League at-bats. After Kenny Lofton's contract expired, Michaels finally figured to be pressed into full-time duty. Of course, the Phillies decided to import Aaron Rowand instead. Not a bad trade for the Phils, but now they have a clear surplus of center fielders. It remains to be seen..

Burnett is risky, but he's the one pitcher out there capable of being a dominant force for the next several years.
