Trade Rumor Roundup: 7 Days Left

Here's the latest from around baseball...

Dejan Kovacevic mentions that the A's are considering Sean Casey.  Casey's doing his usual good batting average/low slugging thing and he's getting $8.5MM for it.  The combined efforts of Dan Johnson and Nick Swisher have been inadequate at first, but would Casey really help?  Johnson is hitting .485/.575/.848 in 33 Triple A at-bats; maybe he deserves another look.  The Athletics, who are dead last in the AL in slugging, wouldn't be helped by adding the powerless Casey.  They need Alfonso Soriano, Carlos Lee, Pat Burrell, or even Raul Ibanez to make a difference.

The Yankees have decided to hold on to Philip Hughes, and the Phils aren't biting on whatever else they offered.  According to George King, the Yanks think assuming Abreu's contract and exercising his option should be enough.  Still, it would be cool to see a nasty young Phillies rotation in 2008 with Hughes, Cole Hamels, Gio Gonzalez, and Scott Mathieson.

Also, I'm hearing that WPEN in Philadelphia has mentioned a trade rumor: Tom Gordon for Trot Nixon.  Nixon is a good hitter (.400 OBP), though he's 32 with declining power numbers.  Given that Flash would be hands down the best reliever on the market, I'd expect the Phils to get more.

Kenny Williams didn't deny the recent Soriano rumor, so now you know it's legit.  Kenny has been pretty shrewd with the media, so this is probably all part of his plan.  Despite word of a possible contract extension with Washington, Buster Olney all but assured us of a Soriano trade in today's blog.

Also, Olney nixed the A-Rod to the Cubs idea, explaining that Rodriguez is a bargain in the Yankees' world.  This column is kind of weird to me.  Phil Rogers almost seems like he's just cooked up a brilliant scenario or something, with Aramis Ramirez and Jacque Jones being swapped for A-Rod.  Thing is, Bleed Cubbie Blue broke out this exact trade rumor three weeks ago.

RotoAuthority has a look at which pitchers have been abused this season.

Phil Rogers is a freakin' moron. Way to jump in on a retarded trade rumor three weeks late.

Ramirez + Jones < Alex Rodriguez

The difference is astronomical.

No way in hell the Phils only end up with Trot Nixon for Flash with the price good relievers are going for these days. I wouldn't even give them Arthur Rhodes for Trot Nixon. Besides, we already have a Trot -- his name's Dellucci. Give me some of what the WPEN guys are smoking.

I just can not see it. Casey would be completly useless in the AL. I mean, Scott Hatteberg has a .900+ OPS in the NL (what does that tell you?). If Hatteberg's OPS would increase +100-200 points, I'd expect Casey's to decrease 100-200 points. That, and he's injured now.

If the A's make any deal for Casey that involves trading anyone of any value, or even taking on any of the $$$ he's owed, then I'd officially say that Beane has lost his touch.

Even if the Pirates dropped Casey off, salary paid, on the A's doorstep it wouldn't be a great move for the A's.

If the Phillies were to trade for Nixon I would assume that'd be an indication they definitely plan on trading another OF or two.
Is it just me or does the way Rogers opens his article make it sound like the cubs would be open to adding abreu, tejada and ARod. I think he means to add just one of the three. Maybe being too picky on grammar and punctuation or I need an english lesson.

Are you sure it wasnt Jon Lieber and/or Corey Lidel for Nixon?

It wouldn't even matter if Jones and Ramirez gave the Yankees equal value in return, (they don't). The Cubs suck and A-Rod would never agree to be traded there.

espnews says the white sox are close to acquiring Soriano

Sean Casey in Oakland makes no sense. They really need another bat that struggles to post an .800 OPS?

Why wouldnt arod go to the cubs? They may not be going to the playoff's this year, but neither are the yankees. At least in chicago he would play for fans that love him, not love him one day and hate him the next 5. The only real yankees fans dont live in NY, all the yankees fans in NY dont know shit about baseball and think they should win every single game.

....and Cub fans are the most knowledgeable fans in all of baseball. And the kindest too.

I think A-Rod would pass on the Cubs (being an unbiased observer) and most other teams. I'm thinking he'd want maximum exposure as well as a competitive team (Angels?). The Cubs look like they are about to start rebuilding.

"Why wouldnt arod go to the cubs?"

I've already said why. Because they suck.

Ughhh the yankees suck and there payroll is over twice our's. Dont try to cop out and say its because sheffield and matsui have been out, the cubs have been without prior and wood( in which hendry is a idiot and like usual banked on both of them, and even a bigger idiot banking on wood)and not to mention our best hitter. Its easier to plug in fielders than it is SP. A better question than I asked before is why would AROD want to stay in NY? They have shitty fans, a shitty owner, and they suck.

Cubs fans will throw shit on the field and fight each other before they will boo a player on a daily basis, and if they do boo a player they take the frustration out on neifi perez. You say Arod would want maximum exposure? Who is on tv nationally at least 50-75 times a year( more than the yankees), who has the most fans at away games and if not the most for sure in the top 2? Who is one of the few teams in baseball that will get 3 million fans again this year even in this pathetic season? So you are trying to say AROD will only go to a maximum exposure team, and one that will be in the playoff's this year, and that can afford his contract? What does that leave the yankees with? AROD is a great player, but hasnt been the great player of the past this year.
