« Glaus Implicated For Steroid Use | Main | Could White Sox Sign Torii Hunter? »
The D'Backs have experienced second-half dropoffs from late-inning relievers Tony Pena and Brandon Lyon. Plus, Juan Cruz's shoulder may be barking again. As a result, Arizona added some depth by signing 38 year-old Bob Wickman today. The team's press release is claiming he's 35 but the beer gut is definitely more indicative of a 38 year-old.
Wickman must've gotten over his dissatisfaction with pitching in non-save situations, since Jose Valverde is going strong with 42 saves.

It won't matter at the end of the month when the Padres have their third straight division championship.

LA picks up Wells and Loaiza, while dumping dead weight Tomko.
Padres pickup Tomko.
DBacks pickup Wickman.
I'm feeling LA.
"we love it"

Oh come on Cali, don't let beating the 500ish Cubs get to your head now ~ you're not in a race against them...
I'm surprised at this move though, I really figured Wicky would retire. Most of his not wanting to pitch outside of the closer roll comes from the fact that he, well, just sucks if it isn't a save opp ~ has for years. Cleveland knew how to use him to get the best results (which is why JoBo works there), ATL should have known it too.
But, it also doesn't make sense for Arz though, wonder what both sides are thinking...
