« Wolf Hopes To Return To Dodgers In '08 | Main | 2008 Club Options »
Bobby Abreu has a $16MM option for the 2008 season with a $2MM buyout attached. Effectively, it's a $14MM decision for Brian Cashman. Despite an awful start to the season, Abreu has solid counting stats and a .287/.367/.454 line overall. Since June 1st, he's hitting an elite .320/.398/.548 in 347 ABs. Abreu will turn 34 in March.
According to both Buster Olney and Tyler Kepner of the New York Times, the option is a virtual lock to be picked up. Most teams would be very eager to sign Abreu on a one-year, $14MM deal, and that's what this amounts to. Abreu would be much easier to trade than Johnny Damon, if Cashman wants to take that route.

I'm not sure Abreu really is easier to trade than Damon. He's got a full no trade clause, whereas Damon only has a limited one (12 teams?).

That and Abreu really likes NYC, he would have no reason/desire to approve a trade.

What teams would be interested Bobby.

Possibly Atlanta if Andruw walks. Move Harris to CF, Francoeur to LF, and Abreu in RF. Not a badn outfield... not a great one, but not bad.

I could see the Cubs being interested in him

If the yankees do exercise his option and then try to trade him I would think that the Astros would be a fit in one more attempt to be competitive before needing to completely rebuild. Although I doubt they have much to offer that the Yanks would be interested in.

I could see the White Sox being intrested in him, if Bobby can play center. I do think he would waive the no trade clause, he has a great realtionship with Ozzie Guillen and the White Sox have been intrested in Abreu since he was with the Phillies

If the Yanks exercise Abreu's option, I'm pretty sure they can't trade him until at least June 15 of '08.

if they exercise abreu's option it isnt going to be to trade him. Obviously he is much better than damon and this being the yankees- they are obviously going to take the better player. The question is are they going to trade damon.

I agree. After a really bad start Abreu has been solid. He has a chance at a 20/20 year, will end up with 120 runs scored, 100 RBI, and right around .290. His OBP is down this year, but he has been an OBP machine throughout his career and it seems like he is a good fit in Yankee stadium. He is great infront of Arod because he is constantly on base and a good baserunner. If Abreu does get dealt and Damon ends up getting stuck out in right field, its gona get ugly.

Damon would never play right field. With Jeter and Giambi's (if he is playing first) awful defense, they cant sacrifice having damon turning singles into triples.

Jeter doesnt play awful defense, he is just overated, but not bad. Giambi is indeed awful, but wont see much daylight at first base. If they opt to trade Abreu, then they would have no other choice but to put Matsui in right which would be just as bad, or probably the best option to move Melky back to right field and put Damon in center. The problem with Damon in right field wouldnt be his lack of range, he has decent range, more of turning first and second situations into first and third because guys will be going corner to corner on him all day and even the slowest baserunners can score from second on Johnnys arm. Still a big problem. The best idea is too just keep Abreu, unless they have some other plan that we dont know of yet.

"Jeter doesnt play awful defense"
trust me- he is probably the worst defensive SS in the American League. I see him enough that i can attest to this and every other system of recording fielding like range factor suggest that jeter completely sucks. He actually costs the yankees a fair amount of runs.

The Jays could certainly use/afford a LH LF.

No, he really isnt the worst defensive SS in the league. I watch him play almost every day, and like I said, he is overated because of his play where he runs into the hole and throws a guy out jumping into left field, but he is not awful. More like middle of the pack.
