Odds And Ends: Cabrera, Bay, Liriano, Clement, Dotel

Lots to go over this morning, so this might not be the last bullet point list you see.

  • The Angels and Marlins are progressing in talks for Miguel Cabrera. It's believed that the Angels are willing to deal players like Reggie Willits, Howie Kendrick, and Jeff Mathis, but the sticking point here is the inclusion of Nick Adenhart. If the Angels want Cabrera, I would have to think Adenhart would be a part of any deal.
  • Pirates GM Neal Huntington says that he is not actively shopping any of his players. However, he acknowledges that if he hears an offer, he'll have to consider it. Some of his team's asking prices are "outrageous," he says. This includes players like Jason Bay and Jack Wilson. But the Pirates may choose in the end to dish Bay, since their strength, if any, is the outfield, and Bay is slated to make $13.25 million over the next two years. That might not seem like a lot, but it's costly when you're working with a paltry $50 million budget. Surely Huntington would love to deal Wilson, though he denies it. He might have trouble finding a partner on that one.
  • Though the Twins deny it, any Johan Santana deal might be dependent on the status of Francisco Liriano. The 24-year-old "hasn't had a single setback" in his recovery from ligament replacement surgery last October. He's completed his rehab program, and might pitch in the Dominican this winter. He's expected to be ready in February fo Spring Training.
  • Add the Pirates to the list of teams interested in Matt Clement. It now spans the Rockies, Diamondbacks, Royals, Padres, and Blue Jays in addition to the Bucs. However, with their payroll cap, Clement might not be feasible.
  • The Tigers remain interested in closer Octavio Dotel. There is no word on whether the team has offered him a contract.

If the Angels find a way to get Cabrera without giving up Adenhart, then Reagins is a genius and/or the Marlins are a lot stupider than previously thought.

A package of Willits, Kendrick and Mathis might be good enough to get a veteran like Tejada, but come on! Not one of the best young players in the game who is still two years away from free agency and probably a couple seasons from reaching his physical prime.

The Fish have got to start discussions off by asking for Willits, Kendrick, Wood and Adenhart. Then settle for Willits, Kendrick and Adenhart. They have to get young pitching in return, and not Ervin Santana or Joe Saunders young...REAL young.

If I was the Angels I would try using Santana or Saunders instead of Adenhart but offer to include say Morales or Kotchman which ever they feel is the lesser of the two, and Terry Evans in exchange for Cabrera and one of the talented toolsy OF'ers that the Marlins have in the low minors. Evans and Willits would probably start for the Marlins right away. Kotch or Morales would be an upgrade over Jacobs. Kendrick goes in at 2b allowing Uggla to slide over to 3b and replace Cabrera. Plus the fish get a SP. For the Angels they are getting a premier young hitter, and replace Evans who will be blocked by Vlad, Hunter, Anderson and Matthews with someone that they can develop to be ready to step in after those guys start to be too old to help the team.

the angels need to give up something because getting cabrera would make them a world series favorite.

Cabrera probably reached his physical peak at age 20, and then proceeded to eat it.

I agree with you Taj Adib if the angels do get cabrera without trading their best prospects brandon wood a posible 20-25 homeruns a season type of guy and Nick Adenhart a posible chance to win a CY award in a couple years. If the Marlins do that they must be stupid for letting thoes guys go. And the angels will only lose kendrick and replace him with Figgins @ 2B, Willits a guy that the Angels dont need cuz they have to many OFers, jeff mathis the angels would have to find a replacement catcher like Paul la Duca and the Marlins can chose between Santana or Saunders. I also forgot the angels can either put izturis or wood or aybar @ Shortstop.

Way to show your stupidity SkiBolton, there's been numerous articles this offseason already detailing Cabrera is already working on coming into 2008 leaner. Maybe it would help if you knew something, anything about what you are talking about. Plus i think just about anyone not named ARod and Pujols would have loved to have the "declining" numbers of Miggy Cabrera

@ozzie

Saying it and doing it are two different things. I'd be surprised to see him leaner next year.

And I'm not talking 5-10 pounds. He could stand to lose 30-40.

His numbers are still better than 97% of the players in the league

And unless he decides to lose some weight, that number is going to decrease year after year.

If his goal in life is to be an awesome baseball player for 7-8 years and then be too fat to move, then he's fine as-is.

If he wants a lengthy career, one worthy of the hall of fame, he needs to get in shape.

Too fat to move? LOL We aren't talking about your 400 pound self sitting in your mommy's basement. Way to blow a non issue into something that will supposedly ruin his hall of fame career

Ozziethedumbass...Please learn to read before you post a reply. In the 15 words I wrote, I made no mention of any declining numbers...quite the opposite. The only number even implied was his weight, which according to the media guide has increased 65 pounds in 5 years. I'd wager that not one of the guys posting on this site is a professional athlete, and I'd put just as much money down saying that none of them have gained that much in the last 5 years. If you don't agree, that's an opinion you're entitled too, but don't pretend I made reference to his numbers declining. I'll spell out what I meant very clearly for you...MIGUEL CABRERA IS FAT!!! HE'S NOT GETTING BETTER PHYSICLLY, HE'S BECOMING A HOMER SIMPSON LOOK ALIKE!!

are you and Jerseymetfan the same person? because it's hard to believe two different people can be that ignorant?

Who's ignorant, the guy that thinks a 24 year old who has gained 65 pounds in 5 years needs a diet, or the guy that doesn't?

According to MLB.com miggy Cabrera is 6-4 and 240. That is NO homer simpson look a like nor is it a fat ass

Ozzie, he was 6'2" and 185 when he broke in (according to baseball reference), and the marlins media guide lists him at 6'2" and 248 in 2007. I haven't heard any steroids rumor with him either, because it obviously isn't muscle he's added. His fieldin percentage at 3b has gone from .986, to .971, to .956, to .941 this season. His zone rating is also down signifigantly in that same period. He can hit...no doubt about that, but he is eating his way to the DH.

No he's growing his way into being a 1b. Which has OMG happened before to a 3b man or 2. if he was 185 when he debuted it's possibly because he was young and hadn't filled out. Most males continue to fill out in size in their twenties without it being getting fat. It's just called filling out

That's not filling out, that's getting ready to pop.

I guess you can use the chart I linked if you can't see it for yourself.
