« Rumor Royalty: Marc Topkin (Rays) | Main | White Sox Not Interested In Prior »
I recently named the St. Petersburg Times' Marc Topkin as Rumor Royalty for the Rays. He was kind enough to answer a few questions for the site.
MLBTR: In your opinion, which club got the better end of the Delmon for Garza swap?
Topkin: My immediate reaction is that the Twins did because Delmon established himself as a potential impact player for a long time, a guy who could be a ten-season All-Star and hit in the middle of a lineup for fifteen years, while Garza still has to make that leap and Bartlett has to become more than a "steady" shortstop.

Delmon Young may turn out to be a star, but I'm not sure how his 2007 performance didn't establish anything. His OBP was poor and his SLG was a bit below mediocre. He also was a bad right fielder.
Garza threw about 80 innings in the big leagues, with excellent ratios and an ERA in the high 3.00s. Based on 2007, Garza wins.

Did we get the entire response to the question? I ask because it states "My immediate reaction" but it doesnt include a "But" or a "After analyzing it more" portion. He gives the no-brainer initial thoughts everyone shares, but nothing more really...
If this is all he had to say then I’m curious as to how he was able to win the chance of being our Rumor Royalty guy… He didnt really answer anything here. :\

Marc Topkin? A writer for DRays Bay recently posted a rumor about a Boof Bonser trade rumor to the Rays. The blogger's source was from a radio DJ who had spoken directly to Boof who claimed that his agent was telling him a deal was imminent (i think the Twins wanted the Rays to take Bonser instead of Garza). Topkin then wrote a piece the next day dismissing the speculation as just another "internet rumor". RJ Anderson and DRays Bay had a legitimate rumor and a legitimate source and Topkin arrogantly dismissed it as if they made it up

I'm pretty sure Garza established himself as a potential impact player as well...
That's really poor reasoning without any explanation whatsoever.

Also, I hope that they don't play Delmon in CF in Minnesota (although I don't see how they can't with players like Kubel, Craig Monroe, Cuddyer, etc. on the roster and occupying the corners).
He's a 4 in CF!
