Questions For Jon Daniels?

Rangers GM Jon Daniels agreed to answer some questions for MLBTR.  Pretty cool, eh?  Leave your suggested questions for him in the comments and I will choose the best five or six.  Impress me!  Note that he is not at all likely to talk about players under contract with other teams.

Who is the toughest gm to negotiate with?

What do you feel is the best plan of action for now and in the future for the Rangers?

What has changed in the Rangers' scouting department to lead to such recent success? The Rangers now have a top 5 farm system (at least) after years of struggle. And a real shot for a future.

Also, what are the longterm plans for Salty? 1b? C? A bit of both?

That is cool.

What are the Rangers plans at the catcher position? With Max Ramirez, Taylor Teagarden, and Salty all in the picture do you see 1 or 2 of these guys moved for pitching in the near future?

With Laird and Salty on the active roster and Teagarden and Ramirez waiting in the wings, what are you plans for your "catching surplus"?

Whats the odds of the Marlins dealing away Hanley Ramirez in the near future? Hes gonna be getting big bucks in arbitration in the coming years and he might be able to get the Marlins more than what they got for Miggie.

He reminds me of a young Barry Bonds. Hopefully he'll follow in his foot steps and head to the Giants.

I'd give the Marlins our whole farm system for Rameriez.

Are the Rangers close to trading Byrd to the Cubs? If so, which players could be involved? Are we looking at a potential blockbuster with players like Young or just a small trade?

You have made a great farm system, when do you see the team making a playoff run?

Where do you envision Hamilton playing? Do you think he would be less injury-prone in RF rather than CF? Secondly, how is Blaylock's recovery comming along?

Who are the Rangers eyeing in the upcoming draft(if he can divulge)

What kind of chance will Jason Botts be getting, and how much do you think he is part of the future?

Cool thing to do.

Is There Any Truth To The Rumors That Marlon Byrd Is Being Traded To The Cubs For Matt Murton?

Do you see the trade with the Cubs getting Marlon Byrd happening?

If you could undo any trade you have made as GM of the Rangers, which trade would it be.

I think I've heard you mention with Bob and Dan the deals that haven't worked out; Young and Soriano come to mind. What in your mind caused those deals to fail? Was it inexperience on your part, a scouting issue, or just bad luck, and how did you deal with the massive critical backlash that the local media threw at your feet?

Oh, if we have to impress then delete my other comment and I'll go with this.

Mr.Daniel's. You, Thad Levine, Don Welke, Ron Hopkins, John Lambardo, Scott Servais, AJ Preller, and countless other have done a tremendous job of ensuring that the future of the Texas Rangers looks bright. Every step you take seems to be in the right direction. But, my question is this; With all of the sound moves that the Rangers gave made this offseason(bringing in Guardado, Jennings, Bradley, Hamilton, and Fukumori) Do you feel like this team can take the AL West by storm next year?

(from a Ranger fan...)

Why don't we hear anything about Nate Gold playing 1B in '08? He's basically done all he can do in the minors and deserves a shot. Do you (the GM and scouts) not like him as a player?
We are definitely in a rebuilding year...why not play more of the young guys to give them experience, instead of signing a bunch of retreads?

(something along those lines would be wonderful to read his answer!)

As a Royals fan I am used to watching games in the pitcher friendly Kauffman Stadium. Do you feel that having one of the smallest (in terms of playing area) ballparks in the majors hurts your ability to acquire pitchers through free agency since they do not want their numbers inflated by the hitter friendly Rangers Ballpark?

Why didn't you trade for Adam Dunn of the Reds?? He is a Home Run hitter who is from Texas. Is it that you didn't want him or is it that Ca$htellini has a man crush on him and wont let him go?

As a Reds fan, I would MUCH rather have seen Dunn traded to the Rangers than Hamilton.

Most Ranger fans are optimistic about the Volquez- Hamilton trade. I think Hamilton has tremendous upside, but is quite a risk. That being said, the Rangers are notoriously thin on pitching and Volquez had an outstanding year in 2007 for having been asked to restart again and work his way through the minors. Was there a feeling in dealing him that he would never live up to his potential?

/\ the same reasons you would rather see Dunn go, are the same reasons TEX wanted Hamilton instead

For a joke question;

Has Blalock stopped taking HGH and steroid injections yet? Or is he still betting on beating the system?

Jon for those who dream of someday becoming a major league GM or front office employee, what advice would you give to them to get to that level? What did it take to get to where you are now? ex: college major, education, internships, etc.

what are you going to do to make the rangers not suck? quit?

Texas recently hired Jim Colborn to lead scouting efforts in the Pacific Rim. What types of players is the team looking for over there? Posted players from Japan, or also high school ages signees from Japan, Australia, other countries?

How much value do you expect to get from Marlon Byrd? Can you move him straight up or will package be more suitable for him?

maximum;

I think so too BUT I wanted to hear it from a REAL General Manager of a Major League team. That way, when the Dunn fans say he is SOOOO great because he hits Home Runs, I can respond with what a REAL GM has said about him.

Have you ever felt restricted by Tom Hicks' ownership philosophies?

Is there anyone in the system who is seen as untradeable?

Why did you back off from Mark Prior when he was available at such a discounted price?

Has there been any interest or discussion about the Angels' Reggie Willits? Given their gluttony of outfield signings in recent years, he would be a great player to add speed as well as the obp that ron covets.

Do you feel like Vicente Padilla is guaranteed a spot in the rotation and if he were to go to the bullpen, would he possibly be a bigger distraction than he's been?

Did you enter this offseason with aspirations of winning this year or in future years?

As an Orioles fan, with your offensive upgrades this offseason, do you invision beating us by 30 runs again this year? 40? Maybe 50...?

How does the organization feel about Brandon McCarthy? Where does he fit in with a below average 07'? Is he considered a bust by the organization? What are the future plans for him? And do you wish you would have kept Danks and Masset instead of trading for McCarthy?

Dunn is a very productive hitter and walks and hits a lot of home runs, but he strikes out a lot and sucks on defense and can't run. There. Hamilton is an all around very good player and can play center well, and is cheap for a while, but has a bad drug and injury history.

It was recently reported that Jason Botts will begin the season as Ben Broussard’s platoon partner at first base. In the past it was said that Botts had back problems playing the position. How accurate are these reports, and if Botts is indeed going to be playing first how has his defensive improved since Frisco?

Since Jason Botts is out of options, where do you see him contributing in the near future? Is there a possibility that he could be traded due to the surplus of 1B and DH's

Are there talks between you and jim hendry concerning Marlyon Bird? If so, is there any chance that you would be willing to include Michael Young for Ronny Cedeno and younger talent?

Who did you look up too that made you want to become GM? Was to become one always a goal of yours?

Do you believe you are taking a chance on Josh Hamilton with his known injury problems and the always present possibility of another drug binge? What upsides did you see in Mr. Hamilton?

Elvis Andrus (SS acquired from the Braves in the Teixeira deal) had a great
season in the AFL(.353/.411/.471). What are the Ranger's expectations of him going into Spring Training and does he have a shot with the Rangers?

Do the Rangers still feel that the Teixeira trade was a good deal?

Did you have any inkling of how the rest of Gagne's season would go back in July, and how seriously did you consider re-signing him this off-season?

Note: he is highly unlikely to talk about other teams' players.

I wanted to second this question: "Jon for those who dream of someday becoming a major league GM or front office employee, what advice would you give to them to get to that level? What did it take to get to where you are now? ex: college major, education, internships, etc."

Also, where does David Murphy fit into plans for 2008 and beyond?

If the M's get Bedard, and the Angels don't do anything else, are the M's the team to beat in the AL West?

What are the Ranger's plans with German Duran? He's a very talented middle infielder who looks like he'll be ready for the majors soon - but currently, he's being blocked by Ian Kinsler, who's (hopefully) not going anywhere any time soon. When he does reach the bigs, what position do you see him at? Will you continue to develop him at 2nd base/shortstop, or are you considering moving him to the OF or 3rd base in the future?

Jon, if MLB were to clear all rosters and have a re-draft for every team, how would you draft your roster? Not seeking specific names... just interested in your philosophy.

The Rangers are the team to beat in the AL West....

Hey Jon, you may know me, from LSB fame. Anyways here's my question: Why not give CJ Wilson a chance to start? Does the organization feel that he is best suited in the pen, or does CJ's previous TJ surgery make you a little wary? Thanks.

Mr. Daniels,
What do you feel the new additions to the team (hamilton, bradley, jennings, guardado, broussard) will add to your franchise?
How will you use Jason Botts this year?
Is there any truth to the Byrd-Cubs rumors? If so, what would the return bring to the team (perhaps Murton)?
What will happen with the back of the bullpen and starting rotation this year? What will Guardado's and Fukumori's roles be? How do you plan to address the seemingly ever-present lack of consistent starting pitching within the organization both now and going forward?

Would you have interest in (re)signing Mark Texiera next offseason if the Braves don't extend him?

Mr. Daniels,
Considering that Rangers such as C.J. Wilson regularly blog, and he and Brandon McCarthy post somewhat regularly at lonestarball.com, do you have a "blogging" or commenting policy for players?

Thanks,
rangeressary

Why do you think that one-time super prospect Nelson Cruz has had so much trouble finding major league success? What will be his role in the Rangers organization now that the team has so many talented outfielders?

Are you done dealing this offseason?

Would you trade for Eric Bedard if you were given an ok by ownership?

Are you happy and content with your pitching rotation and staff right now?

What is the biggest obstacle or misconception about your organization you have to overcome in negotiate with free agents?

Mr. Daniels,

When evaluating a potential trade for a guy like Josh Hamilton who has non baseball-related concerns that somewhat eclipse his professional track record, what kind of due diligence do MLB front offices do in order to lessen the risk of bringing him into the organization? Does it ever involve team employees doing background-check like investigations with non-baseball people that might know more about the mental/psychological/lifestyle condition of the player in question? Or do front offices just defer largely to on-field performance and baseball-insider evaluations of that player?

Mr. Daniels,

Who do you view as the "face" of your franchise for the next 5 years?

You went to Cornell and following your time there you began an internship with the Colorado Rockies and then moved on to the Rangers organization.

For someone like myself wanting to pursue a career in baseball operations(scouting, player development, etc) what would you recommend outside of going to the Winter Meetings? Is scouting school beneficial?

What's the deal with Salty and could you give us an estimation of what his playing time is going to look like heading into next season?

Which prospect acquired in the trades during the 2007 season do you see making the largest impact on the future of the Texas Rangers?

Do you play, or do any of the Rangers play fantasy baseball?

What are your expectations for this upcomming season? Do you think the rangers are ready to contend atleast for a playoff sport?

Mr. Daniels,
Can you please address your specific strengths and weaknesses of this 2008 team? How have your newest aquisitions changed the dynamic the team?

do you think with the additions to the rangers roster that you will be a better team this year? if so what about playoff contention???

In your opinion, what is the most important aspect of a resume in terms of getting into a baseball front office?

If you could build your franchise around 1 player past or present who would it be?

Outside of yourself and your staff, was there ANYONE who thought trading Chris Young and Adrian Gonzales for ADAM EATON AND AKINORI OTSUKA was a good idea?

That, as a Rangers fan, hurts me more to think about than anything we've done, good or bad, in years.

Can you talk about the process of free agents? who decides the players you target, what types of initial conversations with agents, when are terms discussed etc?

Jon,

How much emphasis is placed on the gathering of competitive intelligence by MLB front offices? Do teams keep track of other teams' strategies and player evaluations? If so, to what extent is competitive intelligence used a team's own talent evaluations and trade negotiations?

- Chase

JD,

How much influence did Buck Showalter have in the Chris Young trade?

Thanks

That should read, "If so, to what extent is competitive intelligence used in a team's own talent evaluations and trade negotiations."

Mr Daniels,

I'm a big fan of the job you and your staff have been doing. Please keep up the good work!

My question is where do you see the pitching staff in two years? Given the age of Millwood, and Padilla is it realistic to think Rangers pitching staff of the future is McCarthy, Gabbard, Hurley, Diamond, Beavan?

Once again thanks the continuous improvements, and best of luck this year

Mr. Daniels,

I'm wondering how you get the dream job of a MLB GM? What would you suggest someone study in college to get into the business or is it just a job you get into by knowing someone? As a fan of baseball and a current college sophomore I would love to get into the business but have always wondered if there was a "blue-print" of what to study to become a GM or if you had to catch some breaks in life to get the type of job that people pray for. Thanks for taking the time, and good luck with your season.

What is your opinion of the book, Moneyball, and its influence on baseball philosophy?

Mr. Daniels

Where do you think Jarrod Saltalamacchia will be playing long-term? He was my favorite prospect and I'm excited to see him in the Majors. Also, I'd like to congradulate you on the Josh Hamilton trade. I really think that was an awesome move, getting a very talented player that plays a position of need with only a year of service time. It was very low risk and very high reward and I'm surprised how little you had to give up to get him.

Which of your young pitchers (McCarthy, Hurley, Diamond, etc) do you feel will be heading your rotation in a couple years?

Comment for Tim. Now THIS is what I was talking about when you asked how to improve the site since you started it full time. Getting a bit more inside-y. It doesn't have to be a GM every time, but you know, the occasional assistant GM, director of minors, player, etc. etc.

Jon,

What do you think it is, if anything, that separates you and your peers (other baseball executives) from all of us baseball geeks out there? In other words, what don't we understand about your job?

What was the reaction in the Rangers' FO during Game 4 of the WS when 21 million dollars fell into your laps?

Would you entertain offers for Hank Blalock? What would you want in return?

Sorry, but mgmann's question at 9:23 is excellent. It's even grammatically correct (a rarity from us). Timmy, can I second that one!

As a young GM coming into the game, with no Pro-Ball experiance, did you feel nervious taking a Big League GM job, and how were you treated by the other GM's as a whole?

Mr. Daniels,

You seem to be more willing than most GMs to trade high profile prospects (Volquez, Danks, etc.) and players (Teixeira, Soriano, etc.) which is as admirable as it is risky, to put it one way. Which would you say is more difficult to do as the General Manager of a Major League franchise: trading an established star that you may not be able to keep for whatever reason or dealing a potential superstar that you've been developing?

I would also like to know how you feel about the coverage (blogs obviously included) of the moves you've made, might/could make or are in the process of making? Has this running commentary ever affected negotiations or team decisions in any way?

Thank you for your time and good luck!

Respectfully,
Ernesto J. Ruiz

Thanks for taking the time JD, I have a multi-part question regarding defense.

Rangers Ballpark in Arlington has a reputation of being a hitters paradise and the team has struggled at times preventing runs. It seems that most of the young players you have recently acquired have been athletic, up the middle types, is this due to a shift in organizational philosophy? Are there defensive metrics that the team employs, or is traditional scouting the primary tool used to evaluate individual defense? When evaluating individual players and the team as a whole, how much emphasis is placed on defense relative to offense? If you felt that a position switch of a veteran player would increase the team's defensive efficiency would you mandate this move, or is that type of decision left up to the manager?

Are there any skills or types of players that you feel may be undervalued in the baseball marketplace currently?

With the excellent job you've done of rebuilding the farm system through trades and recent drafts, who is the prospect that most excites you? Who do you think is the closest to having an impact on your team?

As an MLB GM, what is your opinion on the impact of media coverage and its effects on decision-making for a particular organization? For example, are there members of your organization or others that you know of who read blogs or websites such as this to gauge public/fan opinion of you and the moves you make? In other words, does the input of fans, particularly in a medium such as this, ever affect your decision-making processes?

Thank you for your time.

How rewarding is it for you to have committed to a rebuilding phase within your organization, and thus now have one of the most well stocked organizations for future success? Many major publications have rated the Rangers system as a top 5 system which is a major accomplishment.

-Have you had any discussions with Michael Young regarding the youth movement the team is undergoing?
-How is the approach different in regards to developing a 16 year old Latin American, an 18 year old High School player, and a 21-23 year old college player?
-How big of a role do compensatory draft picks play in transactions from a GM's perspective?
-How long until you go to the tattoo parlor with Salty, Blalock, and Hamilton and get your own ink?

What is the one team you hate playing against every year, and why?

or

What one team would you like to see on your interleague schedule, and why?

For the 10 years of Texas Rangers involvement/ ownership (6 years), did George W. Bush really have "no idea" that Jose Canseco, Rafael Palmeiro, Ivan Rodriguez and Juan Gonzalez were amongst the players using Steroids. Its so hard for me to trust that statements he has made regarding this topic. Why isnt this a bigger topic, considering he is our PRESIDENT!!! Why pick on other teams Owners/GM's if they arent going to investigate the biggest of them all? Thank you for your time. Best in 08'

JD,

One of the hallmarks of your tenure as Rangers GM has been your attempt to make smart moves to keep the Rangers competitive in the short term while maintaining a long term vision for the club. You've had mixed success with the former, while your success at rebuilding the team's farm system has been nothing short of impressive. My question is, how do you balance these two strategies? How do you weather the pressures that come from the fans and the media (and Tom Hicks, presumably) to put a winning product on the field each season, while building toward something truly special a few years down the line?

Keep up the great work!

-What is the plan for last year's AA breakout players Brandon Boggs and German Duran?
-If this team surprises and is in contention at the trade deadline, how would you balance the new organizational plan with the pressure to acquire a player or two to make a playoff push?
-What position will Salty play when Teagarden pushes him out from behind the plate?
-Why does djperalta expect you to know anything about George Bush's dealings with the Rangers?

Jon,

With the rise in player salaries in recent years (SP who eat innings receiving mult-year, ten digit salaries, closers getting 10+ million per year, etc.) we have seen teams more willing to part with proven major league talent who are still under team control or arbitration eligible. Clearly the economics of baseball have changed the value of talent teams need to develop to compete on a sustainable basis. At the winter GM meetings, what type of conversations took place regarding the current slotting system in place for the Rule IV draft and do you anticipate more teams to disregard the suggested slotting rates to build stronger from within?

Thank you.

I agree with Waiting Since 1908's question. I would be very interested in knowing what one would need to do to get into the wonderful world that is a Major League front office. I'm sorry it's not an original question, but I intend on pursuing this type of career. Thanks

Mr. Daniels,
I'm confused. The White Sox sign Dotel and immediately DFA'd Aardsma. On the other hand, the Rangers' signing of Jason Jennings seems to have placed 41 players on your 40 man roster. Ranger fans are curious what move will be made next, but I'm just wondering how you're allowed to keep 41 players after the signing was made official?

Thanks for taking the time for fans of the great game,
wes

For Tim:

A few people here, including myself, posted somewhat similar questions about getting into the business... if one of those (or a combination of a few) is posted, it would be greatly appreciated.

Do you actually think that Marlon Byrd is enough to get Matt Murton? Sorry, but it'd take more than that. If you think you're going to get Sean Gallagher too for just Byrd you're insane. Throw in Michael Young and it'd be close. Marlon Byrd will bat .263/.301 with 3 HR for the Cubs with no steals. Why should the Cubs be interested in that?

OK, the questions have been sent. I did include one about getting into the game.

This might be something to read if you are trying to get into the game:

http://www.sabernomics.com/sabernomics/index.php/2007/11/espns-keith-law-interview/

What's going on with Bruce Chen? did he leave baseball and do you think another team will give him a shot?

JD, The Rangers have been one of the worst franchises and baseball for a long time. Can you look hardcore Rangers fans like myself in the eye and promise that the Rangers are going to be contenders in the next 5 years????

It would be great if you could get players to submit to interviews on this site... There are lots of player blogs out there.

How about setting up an interview with Mr. 38Pitches?

With all the recent money freed up regarding Arod, any plans on how to spend it?

Also how are the young prospects you got in the Tex trade coming along?

+1 on the Nelson Cruz question about his role in 2008, given the new OF of Byrd, Bradley, and Hamilton, plus Catalanotto at DH/OF. What does Daniels think Cruz can do? And what more does he need to do, he hit .276/.324/.454/.778 in the second half, when he came back to the team, with 6 HR in 163 AB (27 AB/HR; about 25 HR/season pace), which is not bad in part-time play and about what Cantalanotta hit in 2007.

When will you resign?
