« Nationals, Cardinals Interested In Jeff Weaver? | Main | Dodgers Haven't Discussed German With Royals »
Pedro Martinez commented yesterday that he'll look for three years maximum on his next (and last) contract. The 36 year-old is a complete unknown for '08, but hopes are high.
Martinez could seek $40MM or more over three years if he comes up with 180+ strong inning for the Mets this year. Of course, that would once again be a risky contract for a team.

With Ollie most likely leaving via FA, I think Omar has to resign Pedro. El Duque will also be gone, and Pelfrey is really the only pitching depth they have. Santana, Pedro, Maine is a great 1-2-3, but Pelfrey and a FA as 4-5 is worrisome.

I pray he goes to the Yankees for 3/45M. Just seems perfect. I'd also expect him to pitch poorly. Which seems even more perfect.

No way would I sign Pedro to a 3 year deal. Even if he proves to be healthy and makes 30 starts this year, he is still likely to be injured a majority of his next contract. Pedro was a great pitcher but that tiny frame just isn't going to last until 39. If he would sign an incentive laden contract based on IPs or starts then it would be a great gamble. But we all know Pedro's ego is too big for anything but a large guaranteed deal.

That's EXACYLY why I'm surprised they haven't signed Loshe, even a 2yr deal wouldn't be a bad idea. Santana, Maine, Pelfry, Loshe, ? looks better for '09 then if you don't have Loshe. He showed can handle a pennant chase with Philly, and a LgAv innings eater would do them well this year too.

Darin, why in the hell would the Yankees even entertain the idea of signing Pedro? "LOLOLOL YANKEES SUX" is not valid reasoning.
Onto the matter at hand, Pedro would have to prove alot of things for GM's to even consider the idea of signing Pedro to a three year deal. He'd have to show that hes completely healthy (unlikely, given the multitude of injuries he's suffered) and that he's returned to his pre-injury form.
I'd expect some team that's on the cusp of playoff contention to consider the idea of signing him for a year or two in the hopes that he can solidify the middle of their rotation. Pedro's days as a top pitcher are over.

"Pedro's days as a top pitcher are over."
If he cant stay healthy maybe, if he is healthy, he is the best pitcher on the Mets. Yes, better then Johan. People forget how he dominated in 05. Yes, with a torn rotator cuff in his throwing arm. That seems like it would be hard to do. But yeah, he dominated. Now he has finally gotten healthy again. If Pedro is on the mound, he is an ace. It is actually that simple. Pedro for Cy Young 08. You will never get a medioce 180 innings out of Pedro. It will be either his typical brilliant self that we are all used to, or he will be battling injuries. He wont be a mediocre starter though, ever.

I will say this...
I know it was only 28 innings (5 starts, but he looked DAMN good in those 28 innings. 32 strikeouts, only 7 walks, and a 2.57 ERA.
Santana-Pedro needs to be up there in conversations about the best 1-2 in baseball.
Posted by: stellar | March 11, 2008 at 12:05 PM
No doubt they have the potential to be the best 1-2 in baseball and should be atleast in the conversation. I just don't see Pedro staying healthy for the whole season.

"Darin, why in the hell would the Yankees even entertain the idea of signing Pedro?"
Are you kidding me? This screams Yankees...100%. Don't believe me? How about:
Carl Pavano
Jaret Wright
Kei Igawa
Mike Mussina
Sidney Poson
Kevin Brown
Al Leiter
Jeff Weaver
Sterling Hitchcock
Roger Clemens (part duex)
Now tell me after looking at these Yankee aquisition failures, how can one not think that Pedro has the potential to belong in this group?
Posted by: Darin | March 11, 2008 at 02:03 PM
oops.....please note that Mike Mussina's last contract is most likely a failure and not his entire Yankee career.
Posted by: Darin | March 11, 2008 at 02:06 PM
it would be an honor for pedro to finish his career as a met.
Posted by: cityfield5 | March 11, 2008 at 02:25 PM
I remember that teams were reluctant to give Pedro three years LAST contract, and the Mets finally blinked and gave him four.
How on earth would he get three this time, being 37 at the start of his deal and coming off at least one major arm surgery?
Unless it's the Mets handing out money like candy again, I think he'll have to settle for a 2 year deal with a vesting option.
Posted by: Devlsh | March 11, 2008 at 03:40 PM
you guys do realize that he didn't say he is looking for 3 years. He said he is looking for 3 years MAXIMUM. All that means is he is not willing to pitch more than 3 more years after '08
Posted by: supermets | March 11, 2008 at 04:31 PM
One to three years at 12+ million a year considering his health is a risk. I'm sure some team will give it to Pedro. The Met's like old players past their prime.
