Royals Acquire Ramon Ramirez

According to Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post, the Rockies traded reliever Ramon Ramirez to the Royals for a player to be named later.  In an accompanying move, the Royals designated Jorge de la Rosa for assignment.

The 26 year-old righty reliever has posted some big-time strikeout rates at various stops.  He's a former outfielder who has bounced around in the Yankees, Reds, and Rockies organizations.  He even did a stint in Japan.  In 2005, Baseball America described Ramirez's power repertoire as a 92-94 mph heater, a hard curveball, and a splitter.

Never heard of him but he sounds awesome.

A 26 year old with major league experience, a 94mph fastball, prob good splitter then and average curve ball ?

Sooo whats wrong with him ?

well...that was 2005...and control/command may be an issue

He was injured last year. Look at his stats and you'll see a 9.00+ ERA.

One comment I read said he's struggled in the thin air in Colorado and has done way better on the road.

For the infamous 'player to be named' it's probably not a bad roll of the dice.

As a Rockies fan I am sorry to see this guy go he has great stuff but the rocks have given Wells 3.1 so we are keeping hime instead here are Ramirez's spring numbers

" Ramirez had a 1.42 ERA this spring, allowing two runs on seven hits and three walks while striking out 13 in 12 2/3 innings"

I like him; a lot! And as a AL-C fan 1st and foremost, I have to say I’m a little worried about what he could do in the KC pen…

Someone mentioned the Home/Road splits, and of course it’s a small sample size, but check them out: (06&07 of course)
Car Home ~ 51.2IP, 49K, 53H, 20BB, .268/.336/.470-A ~ 6.62 ERA / 1.41 WHIP
Car Road ~ 33.1IP, 27K, 26H, 13BB, .215/.287/.298-A ~ 1.08 ERA / 1.17 WHIP

Now compare to the 08 preseason line:
Preseason ~ 12.2 IP, 13 K, 7 H, 3 BB, ~ 1.42 ERA / 0.79 WHIP
& His MiL numbers as a reliever the last year (his first in Pen in minors):
Minors 07 ~ 27.2 IP, 35 K, 18 H, 16 BB ~ 2.28 ERA / 1.23 WHIP

Last year in the majors he went 17 appearances (of 22 total) without giving up a run, and didn’t give up a run in any of his 11 Road games. His BB could of course be a little lower, but its something you can get away with in the Pen quite often… Although just a BP arm, this could be a great pickup for the Royals and the change away from Colorado could have a rather dramatic looking effect on a rather skilled looking Ramirez.

Dayton Moore is doing an excellent job of stockpiling pitching. The Royals are going tobe a team to watch one of these seasons. Probably about 2010.

We are definately sad to see him go he was what we got for Shaun Chacon from the Yanks since Chacon was from here(Greeley High school) and had that allstar year(before the break) we had some sentiment on that one. Good luck to Ramon I wouldn't be suprised to see him as the set up guy for Soria by seasons end
