According to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, "the Tigers have had general discussions with the Chicago Cubs about acquiring bullpen help." Detroit's pen has dealt with all kinds of injuries this year.
Morosi implies that Brandon Inge could be a fit for the Cubs if he could prove a capable center fielder. Seems a long shot though. In any case, Ryan Dempster could be a possible fit for Detroit. He's set to earn a hefty $5.5MM this year and doesn't seem to have a clear place on the Cubs' staff. Neither does Jason Marquis, but he's not what the Tigers need.

I could see dempster move he'd fill in well for the 7th and 8th while the tigers get healthy I trust him more then mantei if he had ended up being healthy.

What can the Tigers offer that the Cubs really would be interested in though? Jacque Jones? Unless its someone with a high salary like Dempster or someone who is not very good, then the Tigers won't have anything to offer.
Posted by: scribbletone | March 04, 2008 at 05:51 PM
Porcello?!
Posted by: dacubbies07 | March 04, 2008 at 05:54 PM
lol @ dacubbies07.
I wonder about a deal between the Tigers and Padres. We are pretty deep in the bullpen.
Posted by: OkiPadres | March 04, 2008 at 05:57 PM
It was a joke BTW
Posted by: dacubbies07 | March 04, 2008 at 06:03 PM
I imagine if the Cubs were interested in something the Tigers had it would be the switch hitting Guzman . I believe he plays centerfield . I would think the Cubs would be giving up someone from triple A and Guzman would probably fill the roll that Lou has been wanting for backup center . I don't know much about Guzman except he has some speed but he hasn't had much of a chance to make it for the Rangers . I'm not sure if he was traded from the Rangers to the Tigers or what .
Posted by: hawkeye26 | March 04, 2008 at 06:11 PM
Maybe Lahey for Guzman since Guzman has yet to prove himself ?
Posted by: hawkeye26 | March 04, 2008 at 06:13 PM
Yes, I know. At least I was hoping it was.
Posted by: OkiPadres | March 04, 2008 at 06:14 PM
I think the Tigers should go and ask the Bluejays.
We really don't seem to believe in Brandon League, or Jason Frasor anymore, and they both have incredible arms and proven track records.
They both don't seem to have spots with Jansen and Accardo taking over the 7th and 8th inning duties and the Bjej back as closer.
I am sure if they sent over some middle infield prospect like Scott Sizemore and something crappy that could work it. Or, maybe not. It just seems toronto has a pretty deep pen that knows how to pitch in the AL already.
Posted by: BaseBallz | March 04, 2008 at 06:42 PM
Or ! They could trade Porcello for Jansen and Frasor, haha, that would be awesome; unfortunatly only the Mariner's Bavasi would do that deal, and he's not the Detroit GM .... yet
Posted by: BaseBallz | March 04, 2008 at 06:46 PM
I can't see the Cubs sending Depmster to Detroit for Inge, while he isn't guaranteed a spot in the rotation he will be more reliable than Marquis. Nothing will happen for the Cubs until they settle the Roberts trade. With Roberts on the Cubs, Lou can relax and rely on Pie to play center given the explosive offense the Cubs will have.
Posted by: bdick | March 04, 2008 at 06:49 PM
Too much Cubs talk, even in a story that started in Detroit...
We need another Brian Roberts update!
Posted by: 007 | March 04, 2008 at 07:00 PM
Jesus, just change the site to cubstraderumors.com.
The Braves may be in need of a closer with Alfonso Soriano's ominous injury.
Posted by: Land-Man | March 04, 2008 at 07:20 PM
Yeah, because a Detroit writer reported the Tigers & Cubs are discussing a possible trade this site is obviously just so biased.
Posted by: Game555 | March 04, 2008 at 07:26 PM
Sites not biased. Just more Cub fans out there who give a... than any other team in baseball.
Dempster is not going anywhere. Marquis can go anywhere so long as it isn't with the team back to Chicago. But I don't see any teeth to this at all.
Posted by: bookies710 | March 04, 2008 at 08:10 PM
Marquis for Granderson?
No? Ok.
Marquis for 1000 laid of workers from GM?
Ok...fine. I'll throw in a case of Old Style, but that's it!
Seriously, who would we give? They need established relievers just as much as we do. We have depth but it's unsettled. We've got great Bullpen prospects in Petrick, Hart, and Ceda...but that would be stupid. The only thing that would make sense is Dempster if he doesn't make the rotation. To that point, I really hope that Dempster can step in and be a solid starter for us (Cub fans).
Inge makes no sense to the Cubs. He doesn't want to sit on the bench and would find himself in the same situation in Chicago. I could see him in SF if the Crede deal doesn't go down.
Posted by: cr_hartley01 | March 04, 2008 at 08:29 PM
inge to the cubs is about as likely as marquis to the tigers. unless the tigers fork over a legit left handed reliever along with inge, i don't see this happening
Posted by: msk86 | March 04, 2008 at 08:30 PM
Dempster or Petrick make a lot of sense. Just don't trade Wuertz!
I agree, Inge makes no sense.
Posted by: Aduncaroo | March 04, 2008 at 08:31 PM
The Cubs already have Dempster, Lieber, Marquis, and Marshall fighting for the last 2 spots. They don't have to throw Inge into that mix.
Posted by: jrfukudome | March 04, 2008 at 08:39 PM
"Yeah, because a Detroit writer reported the Tigers & Cubs are discussing a possible trade this site is obviously just so biased."
That, and the hourly Brian Roberts updates. A lot of fuss for a mediocre roid-implicated player. Branch out.
Posted by: Land-Man | March 04, 2008 at 08:39 PM
C, CF, what the f&%k?
Posted by: jrfukudome | March 04, 2008 at 08:39 PM
Are the Tigers looking for a power arm, or just the best available?
Posted by: jrfukudome | March 04, 2008 at 08:41 PM
what do the cubs need in inge
they should just gey payton and roberts from the orioles and lets be doe with it... i want it to get done because im on this website like 10 times a day looking at roberts trade... they should name this site "cubs trade rumors"..lol...
Posted by: ryno23 | March 04, 2008 at 08:53 PM
Branch out to what? Have I been ignoring good rumors with other teams or something? Perhaps the reason for the frequent Roberts updates would be...an All-Star type player likely to be traded this month? In a month when good players are rarely traded?
It's weird, I didn't hear about my Mets, Twins, Orioles, and Mariners bias when we were giving hourly Bedard and Santana updates.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | March 04, 2008 at 09:48 PM
I guess I am just bummed because Land-Man usually writes some of the wittier comments on here. I did not expect him to go the cliched route of "Cubs bias!," something that would never have been said if I didn't tell people I am a Cubs fan.
Posted by: Tim Dierkes | March 04, 2008 at 09:49 PM
Tim. It's not you; it's us. There are a lot of Cubs fans and many say stupid things; they clog the threads and annoy people. Then people take it out on you. I glad you herd us into the Roberts threads. We do say a lot of that "Murton, Gallagher, Cedeno" stuff. But you're doing nothing wrong. I apologize on behalf of Cubs fans if we sometimes fail to have your back.
Posted by: jrfukudome | March 04, 2008 at 10:10 PM
People, relax! The Cubs happen to be active right now. It will end at some point. You all seem to have forgotten the Bedard trade already!
Posted by: jrfukudome | March 04, 2008 at 10:11 PM
It's okay, Tim. As a reminder, you need to appeal to the masses. You don't need to apologize because most people follow the New Yorks, Chicagos, LAs, STLs, and Bostons. Could you imagine this site if it were focused on the Royals, Marlins, Nationals, and Pirates? Not to say they don't have a loyal fan base; they just don't do much for the masses. Those teams don't make many moves or much noise compared to the others. What are you supposed to do, make stuff up to appeal to everyone?
Posted by: cr_hartley01 | March 04, 2008 at 10:46 PM
how about..... dempster and a bullpen catcher for cabrera and we can put him at short
Posted by: grathanial | March 04, 2008 at 10:53 PM
i know i will be ridiculed but here are my thoughts. I would trade howry to the tigers for a minor leaguer with high upside. this allows for a few things. if lieber and marquis win the starting roles then you move dempster to be your closer again. if someone became injured then dempster can move back to the starting role. or you could trade dempster to another team as he would be a cheap starter option for someone at only 5.5M.
if dempster was moved back to the rotation due to injusy or if he is traded then you have woody as your closer with marmol as your main setup man. you could then bring hart up as another strong setup man. my whole thought process is that howry brings back alot more in a trade right now than dempster would. dempster could bring something back only if a team has a starter go down. thoughts?
Posted by: integr96 | March 04, 2008 at 10:55 PM
Maybe if we decide that the Roberts deal isn't gonna happen we try for Polanco. Doubt that the Tigers will want to part with a guy that is a career .305 hitter but maybe the right mix of young arms and Dumpster can get them to bite.
Posted by: Gleebo | March 04, 2008 at 11:07 PM
Dempster in todays AL central? As an Indians fan, I openly welcome this! As a baseball fan, I gasp…
I think Inge to Chicago only makes sense if Roberts isnt obtained. (DeRosa would be covering 3B if needed so Inge would have no spot to ever play). If Roberts isnt brought in though, then I understand it a little more, but think Ward would kind of be forced out under that circumstance as well… Its pushing it, unless they thought he could back up C, 3B, 2B and all three OF spots.
Jr,
“People, relax! The Cubs happen to be active right now. It will end at some point. You all seem to have forgotten the Bedard trade already!”
…Sadly, that’s not really the case though. Its not the Roberts stuff that has most people saying what they are, it runs even deeper than that. It used to be “oh Carl Crawford is possibly available, where is the customary Marshall + Jacque Jones post” type stuff. Its really been like that for well over 2 years, I don’t think it will probably ever change really…

"I guess I am just bummed because Land-Man usually writes some of the wittier comments on here."
*sniffle, somebody noticed*
Just aimless bitching, Tim. All I care about is Atlanta, so I can't really talk. Keep up the good work, Chief.
Bravo Zulu!
PS: Cubs still suck.

We cool, keep on truckin'

Someone like Rayburn may work for the Cubs.
Rayburn for Ascanio.
Rayburn can play center (I believe), would the Tigers part with him?
Posted by: jrfukudome | March 04, 2008 at 11:42 PM
Ascanio and Lahey, excuse me.
Posted by: jrfukudome | March 04, 2008 at 11:46 PM
"I would trade howry to the tigers for a minor leaguer with high upside."
Make it a three-way trade, with that high upside minor leaguer from the Tigers headed to Minnesota, along with another one or two from the Cubs, and Nathan coming back to the Cubs.
Having Nathan would put an immediate end to the Cubs' closer discussion, and would solidify things substantially. Both Nathan's and Howry's contracts expire after 2008.
Posted by: davearm | March 05, 2008 at 12:48 AM
davearm, you've got it.
Dempster and theriot go to the tigers.
Cedeno + Murton go to Twins
Whatevers left of the tigers minor leagues goes to the twins.
We Get Nathan, Delmon Young, Polanco and Miguel Cabrera (but only if he agrees to play short, because ARam is a true veteran leader at 3rd base and easily the best 3rd baseman in baseball).

"Dempster or Petrick make a lot of sense. Just don't trade Wuertz!"
I don't think Wuertz would go. Every year he has a horrible ST.
Posted by: studio179 | March 05, 2008 at 07:53 AM
Why would the Tigers ever give up Polanco? Who would play 2B?
And lets not forget that the Tigers have already added something like 40-50M this season. I cant imagine they just up and add another 5M in a guy like Dempster (or esp the 17M Marquis will make) unless they were able to remove some at the same time.
Jacque Jones possibly? He fits the Cubs desire for a Vet Back-up CF who can play daily if needed... Hehehe...
Posted by: darkstar1661 | March 05, 2008 at 01:42 PM
OMGDACUBBIESOMG, not sure what precipitated that little sarcastic rant.
If you don't think Howry is worth a high-upside prospect, then maybe take it up with the guy whose idea I was piggybacking.
If you think Nathan is worth more than 2 or 3 high-upside prospects, then I'd direct your attention to the deal the Twins made with the Mets involving Johan Santana for four prospects, two of which warrant a "high upside" label (Deolis Guerra and Carlos Gomez).
Posted by: davearm | March 05, 2008 at 04:54 PM
"Jacque Jones possibly? He fits the Cubs desire for a Vet Back-up CF who can play daily if needed... Hehehe..."
No no no no no. For one, he sucks. For two, no one in the city of Chicago likes him. Third, he is left handed, which would defeat the WHOLE purpose. Four, he sucks.

"If you don't think Howry is worth a high-upside prospect, then maybe take it up with the guy whose idea I was piggybacking."
Howry will be a type A free Agent after this year...so he is going to bring back 1, if not 2 first round picks. He is actually worth a whole lot right now...
