Davidoff: Tejeda Makes Sense For Mets

Newsday's Ken Davidoff has an idea for the Mets: 26 year-old recently DFA'd starter Robinson Tejeda of the Rangers.  Davidoff notes that the Mets have had interest in him in the past, and now he could be had for very little via trade or even a waiver claim.

Tejeda's main problem has been control.  Back in '05, Baseball America compared Tejeda to Carlos Silva "in build and repertoire."  One big difference - Tejeda averages almost 95 mph with his heater.

I discussed some other Pedro replacement options in this post.

Thisis a much better idea than vargas. He'd be another low cost high upside pickup, like maine and perez. It would be pretty reasonable to expect the same type of production from him that they could get from pelfrey, so why not stash pelf in AAA for some depth. If not, trade him for a low level prospect like they give up for him.

Tejeda is another Daniel Cabrera: a hard thrower with terrible control. His control has been terrible since the minors so good luck trying to turn him around.

Kind of like oliver perez...

Like Edison Volquez,

If a change of scenery can give him just a little bit more control his stuff is filthy.

With the offense and defense the mets have, he ought to be able be a .500 pitcher for the mets with no improvement. Getting to the NL won't hurt, although the NL east with pitchers are still better lineups than what he faces in the AL west.

The Mets are the big favorite this year but there has to be some serious concerns here. This is a team that is aging yet lacks depth, both on their roster and on the farm. That’s a dangerous combination They’ve got Angel Pagan in LF…a guy the Cubs dumped for nothing even though they didn’t have a backup CF. Pagan can look good for small stretches but if he has to play long term, he’ll get exposed for what he is: an athlete trying to play baseball. His low baseball IQ is always a frustrating moment away from presenting itself…that’s not to mention that fragile health issue. Now they’re trying to piece together a pitching staff from the scrap pile? They might get lucky there – but those guys are what they are. Don’t get me wrong, the Mets have talent-- maybe the most talent in the league-- but they have the look of a team that will be walking a tightrope all year between juggernaut and disaster. They are the baseball equivalent of a high risk/high reward venture.

Tim, what are the chances of Claudio Vargus here?b

Well said Crunchy

I think he is much better than Claudio. I'm sure Peterson could work his magic on him as well as he did with Oliver Perez

"Tejeda is another Daniel Cabrera: a hard thrower with terrible control. His control has been terrible since the minors so good luck trying to turn him around. "

Daniel Cabrera is another guy I would love if he could be had on the cheap if/when the O's give up on him. I just cant help but think that he will finally put it all together at some point, even if it is just for a year or two. I love guys with stuff. Vargas wouldnt be a bad option for the number 5 starter, and Shea would help him, and the Mets also have a solid defense, there are worse options. I really feel bad for Pedro though because of how hard he worked to get back only to tweak a hammy (it had just started to rain about 5 minutes earlier, dont know if this had anything to do with the injury), but I knew right away it wasnt good because of the way that he walked off the field, he walked right past by me going into the dugout and he looked dejected, hanging his head. I looked at my dad and said this will be 8 weeks, and the Mets are in trouble. They went from a team with slightly above average offense, and a sick pitching staff to now a team with an pretty good pitching staff and okay lineup.

I honestly think the thing more important then finding a starter (I actually like Figueroa for the time being, certainly over Sosa), is Delgado picking it up because their lineup will need to produce on days of the 4th and 5th starters no matter who they plug in. Beltran and Wright look locked in to start the year, Church, Pagan and Schneider have contributed nicely but Delgado will be right in the middle of everything and if he doesnt hit he will kill a ton of rallies. Somebody is going to have to step up somewhere though.

Maybe the Orioles should pick up Tejeda. Then, they'd have two guys like Cabrera, including Cabrera. I think if they could get three, the odds would favor one of them making it. :)

What is it with Mets fans and their obsessive belief that mediocre or worse pitchers just have to put on a Mets jersey and then, suddenly, they will transform into good pitchers?

Tejada was released by the Rangers! The Rangers! A team on a perpetual quest to find even mediocre pitching!!

When the Texas Rangers realize that Tejada isn't even good enough to pitch for them, it puts every other major league organization on notice that this guy really isn't very good.

But why do Mets fans seem to think that a pitcher with terrible control (the main reason Tejada is out of work) will suddenly discover it in Shea?
