« Rosenthal's Latest: Roberts, Bonds, Dunn | Main | Odds and Ends: Bowden, Strasburg, Draft »
Sidney Ponson won't be missed in Texas, despite a 3.88 ERA in nine starts. Ponson coupled good control with a 57.3% groundball rate, compensating for a lack of strikeouts and tons of hits. The Rangers decided after a couple of incidents that it wasn't worth it.
Nonetheless, a few Astros players asked Houston Chronicle beat writer Jose de Jesus Ortiz to encourage the team to sign Ponson. Ponson sounds like a decent-sized (pun intended) clubhouse distraction, but he keeps getting chances. Barry Bonds must really destroy a clubhouse.

Certain guys, because of who they are as a person, subtract more from a team than they add. I'm afraid Ponson is one of those guys. Somebody will pick him up simply because pitching is so scarce. But it will be a mistake.

Some team will, but the leash will be short.

I can see it now, his next contract has something in it saying "...must wear duct tape over mouth when not on the field".

Does he actually provide enough of an upgrade over someone like Backe or Chacon to warrant the headaches? The guy's coasting with a 1.50something WHIP and a real low K/9....guys like that usually don't fair well in Minute Maid Park.

I think given the right team with the right leadership, the Braves with Bobby Cox for example, could possibly help Ponson screw his head on straight. If he were to go to such a team and get DFA'd again due to an issue it might be a career killer.
