The Newark Star-Ledger is reporting that the Yankees have signed Sidney Ponson to a minor league contract.
The Yankees just announced that they have signed right-handed pitcher Sidney Ponson to a Triple-A contract. Presumably, this means Ponson will report to Scranton, but it would seem likely that he'd get a shot in the Yankees' major-league rotation soon.
Ponson was released by the Rangers on Monday, 10 days after being DFA'd for "disrespectful and adverse reactions to situations unbecoming of teammates." Ponson was 4-1 with a 3.88 ERA in 9 starts with the Rangers.

Yanks fans should get accustomed to Ponson's tummy still jiggling 3 days after he has thrown a ball. Every outing will be a Homer Simpson moment: "Woohoo! Look at that blubbler fly!"

Stay Classy NYY.

If this is Cashman's doing, he should have a nice life in Seattle.
Talk about the wrong person for the job ... this guy is dugout poison and, by the end of the season, his ERA will be even more bloated than he is.
If I was from Aruba, I'd be thinking twice about choosing to spend a summer with angry NY fans rather than chilling on some beach in my native country. And they will be angry!!!

As if we needed any more evidence that this organization is in complete disarray.

Overreaction much? He's just in AAA. He wasn't given a ten year deal. Maybe he makes one start at most (doubleheader 6/27).

I've seen this move already.

In my opinion this is a GREAT move for the yankees.
Say what you want about his attitude but I think Ponson's got the stuff to give them 7-8 wins in the second half of this season at least. The yankees have their ways of dealing with attitude problems. It is like the sox signing colon. I don't think they are expecting much out of it hence y they gave him a minor league contract.

I think it's a great move. We need ML caliber pitching and he fits the bill. The leash will be very tight on him and he knows that. He won't be an issue in the clubhouse with the veterans that they have and, if he is, his ass is as good as gone. Low risk, high reward. If only they would have considered that when Colon was available.

Not only that but pitchers such as andy pettite, mike mussina, and mariano rivera will not put up with his crap if he does decide to be a problem. If his attitude starts up Texas had no one to stand up to him. Whos gonna get in his face? kason gabbard? he needs the dicipline of an older pitching staff which the yankees provide

Andy Pettitte, Mariano Rivera, and Mike Mussina would all fall victim to the one hitter quitter if they got into an altercation with Ponson.

I think it's a great no-risk move

"Calm down people, it's a minor league deal. Besides, Ponson already had a stint in the Bronx and according to people who were around the team, for whatever reason his attitude was never really a problem during his brief tenure."
True, but the 10.47 era and the 2.02 whip might have been an issue. fWIW I like the signing too, I just cant help myself with the jokes.

Good thing he doesn't have any facial hair to trim. Don't forget appearances and a professional demeanor are important in the Bronx.
You can be a fat drunk who bashes his teammates, and punches judges in the face, but you better keep that god damn mustache neat.

Not to mention their owner is about as far from classy as you can ever be. Since the 1800's.

If you're a Yanks fan, who would you rather see on the mound at Yankee Stadium, Kei Igawa or Sidney Ponson? I think that question answers itself. If he fails, he can drunkenly waterski his way back to Aruba...no harm, no foul for the Yanks.

it will get one start be horrible and be a DFA canidate again I would rather pavano or igawa

low risk high reward
this dude was the o's ace a couple of years ago
he wont be a problem because hes in new york
Posted by: Zach | June 18, 2008 at 10:49 PM
and hes only 31 years old

Great pickup for the Yankees. Ponson's personal life and attitude probably won't have any effect in the Yankee dugout.
Posted by: helloelan | June 18, 2008 at 11:20 PM
That is true, Jeter will just give him that calm gaze of steely clutchness, and that career 91 ERA+ will turn into Pedro like dominance. His drunken idiocy will vanish into an almost Thurman Munson clubhouse presense.

The Yankee "clubhouse" wont matter for Ponson. He's a fat drunk that allegedly called Washington an "N-bomb" and got punched by Michael Young.
Good riddance.

Congratulations to ArodSucksAtLife - one of my all time favorite posts here on mlbtraderumors. Classic.
Here's the problem with Ponson ... he sucks. He's not only a bad person but he's a rotten pitcher.
Don't be fooled by a handful of starts in Texas. The guy just sucks. If Texas doesn't want him that should tell you something.
I don't think he hurts the team. I do think that this signing smacks of desperation. How can any team with a $200m+ payroll turn to a guy like Ponson and hope that he can bring something to the table? With the Yankees vaunted farm system (as their fans love to brag about) and their vast financial resources - this is the best they could do? Pathetic.

According to the radio in NY, Milton Bradley apparently was quoted as saying Ponson "really has issues." Don't even need a joke here
Posted by: wayne gomes | June 19, 2008 at 09:30 AM
Apparently there was a miscommunication between Cashman and Hank Steinbrenner. Lil Stein told Cashman that he wanted a "Big pitcher full of beer", so Cashman went out and signed Ponson but Hank really just wanted something to drink.
