« Teixeira To D'Backs Unfounded | Main | Mets Focus On Raul Ibanez »
More on the Mark Teixeira front: Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta Journal Constitution names four guys the Braves have been reportedly targeting in deals for Teixeira. Nobody new appears, but it's good fodder for conversation:
Kevin Youkilis: Ortiz is healthy and Youkilis has been arguably the Red Sox MVP so far this season, not far off from Teixeira in production. Both sides deny it. Mixed reviews from MLBTR readers. Can we put this to rest?
James Loney: Keith Law reported yesterday on the Dodgers as a good fit with the caveat that Loney would have to either be included in the deal or default to the bench. If included, Loney would be a good a catch for the Braves. At age 24, he's getting paid $411,000 to hit .301 and drive in a team-high 57 RBI. He won't hit free agency until 2013. Far be it from me to predict what the Dodgers will do, but Loney has to be at least somewhat untouchable.
Conor Jackson: These rumors have been dispelled for now.
Casey Kotchman: Maybe the only intriguing possibility on this list, Kotchman is 25 and not eligible for free agency until 2012. The Angels dangled him and Joe Saunders in a deal for Teixeira before the Braves one-upped them. The Halos' offense has picked it up this month and Scioscia's saying they don't need help. Still, with the addition of Teixeira, the Angels would be scary.

Wren is on crack if he didn't accept an offer of Kotchman and Joe Saunders for Tex. Not sure that's how the offer went though.
Braves aren't going to get what they gave up for Tex, then if Youk, Loney, Jackson, Kotchman, or Saunders are offered in a Tex deal, GO FOR IT.

rex, saunders and kotchman were what was offered to texas for tex last year, not alanta this year.
kotchman and saunders subsequently have gone on to have much better years in 08 than expected. probably would have worked out better for the rangers in hindsight given saltys slow progress.

While highly unlikely, I don't think we can rule out Tex to the Red Sox, except Youk wouldn't be headed to Boston. Instead, if the Sox were to move Manny (although I don't think they will), the Sox could move Youk to LF and put Tex at 1B.
Not saying it's likely or that I think they should do it, but I don't think we can completely rule it out yet.

These four players are definately at the center of the braves radar as a center for a bounty in return for Tex. The player, I agree Tim, that intrigues me the most is james loney. The dodgers seem to be the team out of all four mentioned that wants to make a Tex type move, and also Loney is the most promising out of the players you mentioned. However, I also agree, he is the least likely to be dealt. I again would attempt to package up ohman and Tex for the Angels and see if we cannot land kotchman and adenhart, and do the same for the dodgers and we if we can perhaps get Loney and thensome. It appears the braves might find some good possibilities, as Frank Wren must not forget that not only does the team he trades Tex and/or Ohman to get teh said player, they are also likely in line for two to four draft picks

I doubt the Braves could get both Kotchman and Adenhart for Tex and Ohman. Maybe Kotchman and a Reggie Willits type. The Braves have got Willits and Kotchman to help out next year and have enough money to get a big bat left fielder and a starter. The Angels don't have Willits in their long-term plans and have Kendry Moralas to replace Tex. They could extend Ohman if they want. Seems like a good deal for both teams.

Loney for Tex straight up?
Hmmmmm, I think Loney's going to be something special and would rather NOT see this happen---but then again I don't think I'd run out in front of a bus if it did. HOWEVER----Frank McCourt has evidently sent the word that trades must be salary neutral, Teixeira is signed for this year only at 12MM, Loney is locked in team control for a number of years and is currently pulling 430K. LA would probably insist on an extension with Teixeira. Unless the Dodgers' philosophies change drastically, this is NOT HAPPENING. If it were to SOMEHOW happen, I would immagine an arm would be tossed in from ATL if LA were to include LaRoche. As it stands, highly doubtfull.

Joe,
While I don't necessarily disagree that Kotchman and Adenhart is too much for Tex and Ohman, Willits and Kotchman is not enough. Willits has very little value in a trade. He's seems to be more of a 4th OF type and the Braves already have a younger, similar player in Gregor Blanco. I think the Braves would either be looking for a high-upside/high-risk young prospect or solid near ready type prospect. Maybe a Brandon Wood type guy, though I'm not sure how well he would fit the Braves future needs.

nixa37,
Agreed. Blanco and Willits are awfully similar, and Blanco may actually have a little more power.

Blanco or Willits wouldn't be bad guys to give lots of ABs if you're getting a ton of power production at the other two OF spots. The Braves aren't getting that, so Willits doesn't help the team at all.

Loney is almost as untouchable as Kemp. The Dodgers are looking to fill major holes like they did at 3rd base. Going from Loney to Tex might be an upgrade, but one that isn't worth the money and loss of control. Loney is staying put.

Hey JoelCards, I never said the Sox would trade Manny to Atlanta. I was saying if they traded him, then the sox could trade for Tex and move Youk to LF.
Trade Manny to team X for whatever and then trade prospects to ATL for Tex.
Next time I'll explain everything out for you nice and slow so you can keep up.

Hey Joelcards, I never said the Sox would trade Manny to ATL for Tex. What I said was the Sox could trade Manny, which would allow for Youk to move to left and then they could trade for Tex.
Next time I'll be sure to spell it out for you nice and slow so you can keep up.

"Loney is almost as untouchable as Kemp."
Correction: Loney is more untouchable than Kemp. Next to Martin, Loney is the Dodgers' most untouchable position player.
"as for tex to the angels, this trade makes too much sense for the angels to pull off. "
No, the trade I saw up there makes far too little sense. Saunders is making a case for the AL Cy Young on a team that is going to rely mostly on pitching whether they have Tex on the team or not. You don't trade the guy who has been your best starting pitcher AND your excellent, young first baseman in the same move for a 2 month rental. Plus, Saunders isn't due for arbitration for at least 1 more year. Such a trade would be absolute stupidity.
Adenhart, sure. Kotchman, sketchy. Saunders, hell no.
Wood + Adenhart + GMJ + lower level prospect sounds much better to me

AA,
Dude no way the Braves would want GMJ and his bloated contract. Wood, Adenhart, and lower level prospect seems solid.

- Angels:Tex is worth more than just 1 player. I could possibly see them dealing Tex and Ohman to the Angels for Juan Rivera an Jered Weaver or John Lackey.
-Boston: Tex and Brent Lillibridge for Youkilis.
-Dodgers: Tex and Lillibridge for Andy Laroche, and Brad Penny, and Andre Eithier
-D-Backs: Tex for Conor Jackson and Mark Reynolds.
