Rockies Rumors: Fuentes, Redding, Fogg, Byrd

1:38pm: Jayson Stark says Fuentes is staying put.  A little more than an hour left til the deadline.

9:33am: Mark Zuckerman of the Washington Times says the Nationals are leaning toward keeping Redding, and have even had preliminary extension talks with him.  Trades of Paul Lo Duca, Odalis Perez, and Felipe Lopez are also unlikely.

THURSDAY, 8:31am: Troy E. Renck of the Denver Post indicates the Rockies want to keep Fuentes.  He says they're looking at starters such as Tim Redding, Josh Fogg, and Paul Byrd.  Redding's stock dropped last night with an ugly start.

WEDNESDAY, 9:12pm: On Sunday, Rockies GM Dan O'Dowd termed a Brian Fuentes trade "highly unlikely."  However, ESPN's Jayson Stark says the Rockies will decide late tonight whether to put Fuentes on the market.  The Mets, Phillies, and Rays are out given the high asking price.

Ken Rosenthal wrote earlier that the Rockies were "poking around" with interested parties, still asking for a young MLB starting pitcher or two good prospects.

In a related note, Fuentes set the club record for saves with 103 tonight. he also lowered his ERA to a nice 3.0. As usual, the Rockies will only trade him if they can get great value back.

I know Mets and Rockies fans alike will jump down my throat for this one, but its purely hypothetical speculation.

The way the Mets farm is built, if there's anything worth doing, it better be monster. They have their lone blue chipper, a handful of interesting arms, and a handful of above average bats.

So, here's my thinking: If the Rockies did decide to sell, would Fernando Martinez, Jonathan Niese, and Eddie Kunz be a core package you could build something onto for both Brian Fuentes and Matt Holiday?? Wouldn't the Rockies have to consider that? A blue chip outfielder, perhaps ready to take Holiday's spot in short order. A big, power RP prospect, perhaps ready to battle for the vacant closer spot in short order. Then a quality, polished lefty SP prospect. Obviously Fernando is the centerpiece, so the question for the Rox is, can they get a blue chipper like that if they wait until the offseason with Holiday? The Tex deal proves they won't if they wait till next year's deadline, and Holiday probably isn't quite as valuable as Tex to begin with. If the Mets offered one more prospect with about the value of a sup pick (say Mike Carp or Robert Parnell, but not Wilmer Flores), could the Rockies really get better total value anywhere else?

Omar loves to talk up his farm, but this regime has also done a decent job of keeping guys popping up every time the upper levels of the are purged. I understand the reluctance to trade F-Mart, he's unique. But whether Niese gets traded or promoted, you can already see perhaps a guy like Brad Holt, the supposed first round bust from draft day, stepping right up and becoming the best arm in the system (He's got a 1.55 ERA in the NYPL and is leading the league in Ks). Even with an expensive ace, if the Mets can find a big LF solution for next year, there should be no problem spending on the rotation again with Maine (fingers crossed) and Pelfrey still relatively cheap. For these reasons, I don't buy the "untouchable" tag on Parnell, Kunz, or Niese for a second. If you have Holiday or you know Fernando Martinez will be ready, there should be no problem giving Perez the contract he wants, or taking a chance on Sheets.

If the Mets did get Holiday and Fuentes, they could then call the Tigers and offer them a lefty in a bloat RP contract swap - Farnsworth for Shoeneweiss.

The mets said know to CC forFernando Martinez, Jonathan Niese and 1 lower A baller.

They may trade you 1 of the 2 above and 3 very low maybe type player with A+ up side but your not getting 3 of their top prospects Omar will go with what he has before he does that .

Those are 3 guy that could be in the Major next season at different points .
According to Omar they most likely will break spring traind with Niese in the rotation and Martinez in the Outfield .

I'm in Cleveland and thats pretty much what came out when the question was asked why couldn't Omar and Shapiro work out the CC trade.

Plus Omar never gets desperate
Never look at his history .

"The mets said know". No. They did not say know. They said "no".

we will send Paul Byrd to the Rockies and Pay the remainder of his contract aprox 3 mil

for one of the following

Jhoulys Chacin / Connor Graham /Jeffrey Cunningham

What do you think .

As a Rockies fan, I'd say not to Chacin for Byrd, but would give you either of the other two for him.

I think the Rockies are crazy if they hold on to Fuentes. They need to realize that they have little chance at this point of making the playoffs and little chance of resigning Fuentes. He's also old enough that offering arbitration is enough of a risk that they may not want to risk it. Even if they do and get the picks, the Rockies history with late first round/early second round picks doesn't inspire confidence that they will get a quality player.

Then that would most likely get the deal done

The Nationals have no clue! Why sign a guy like Tim Redding to an extension? Are the Nats going to be competitive in the NL East in the next 4 years?

No way!

Trade Redding, Perez, Lopez AND LoDuca and get a pool of prospects, maybe a couple will turn into decent players.

The Mets should think about using their prospects up for trade... So much hype was placed on Lastings Milledge and he ended up being a wash for the Nationals. The Mets can easily solve their outfield issue with two words...Sammy Sosa. What is best is that they can use their prospects to look for much better relievers... The Met bullpen is atrocious. If you want proof, just look at Mets vs. Phillies... 9th inning 4 run lead and all of a sudden, 4 met relievers cant finish the job. Scott Schoeneweis, Aaron Heilman, Carlos Muniz, and Pedro Feliciano need to be dealt.

Obviously the Rockies couldn't get anything worth more than the picks they will receive when he leaves. Besides, I think they were a little reluctant to trade him with his wife 7 months pregnant.

Yeah, first Guzman, then Redding?? Bowden honestly has no clue how to run a team...YOU TRADE GUYS WHEN THEY ARE AT THEIR PEAK VALUE...These are two perfect trade candidates

Such a bad move to hold on to Fuentes for a team that wants to compete now.

Hope the Rocks love their sandwich pick + a hopeful late first rounder (or possibly a 2nd rounder).

I'm not sure the Rockies couldn't get anything better than the two picks. I think they may be delusional enough to think they still have a chance. Also, I think people overvalue the picks. Take a look at the people drafted in the latter half of the first and supplemental rounds (especially by the Rockies) in the last few years--there are some hits, but also a lot of misses. Lastly, I wouldn't guarantee that the Rockies will offer arbitration and risk Fuentes actually accepting arbitration.
