The Padres found an unlikely suitor for lefty starter Randy Wolf in the Houston Astros. Here are the reactions:
- Paul DePodesta thinks Chad Reineke might be able to help the Padres soon.
- Richard Justice calls it a stubborn move for the Astros, who "threw $3.5MM at a lost season."
- MLB.com's Jim Molony wonders if the Astros could shop Wolf in August if the team falls further out of contention. An Ed Wade quote reveals part of the motivation for the acquisition - the GM says the Astros get their foot in the door in case they want to sign Wolf beyond this season.

My reaction: This trade seems eerily similar to the Pirates acquiring Matt Morris.

There have been a lot of negative comments about this trade. Reineke might be a middle reliever at best. Wolf provides the Astros much needed depth. If it doesn't work out its only 1/3 of a season, not a long term deal.

I would say the same thing except for one massive difference: contracts. Matt Morris was on the hook for another season after the one he got traded in, at another $10M. Randy Wolf is a free agent after this year, so this is just a rental.
This deal really isn't bad because Reineke is nothing special and its not like this costs them tons of money long term or anything.

$3.5M for the privilege of being first to negotiate for a back-of-the-rotation starter? I like Randy Wolf from his Phillies days, but that's sheer insanity. Reineke probably could have slotted into the Houston rotation and eaten innings almost as well as Wolf will, given the bandbox park.

The Astros are a miserable organization. Period.

Wasn't it just a few months ago when Richard Justice was saying he "wouldn't change a thing" about the "surprisingly good Astros"? This guy flips more than any politician I've ever known of! Justice for president! I've stopped listening to him all together.

Aw man...on a side note, when I was able to preview my posting, it momentarily went back to the old format. How I miss the old white-on-black...
