I hope the Cubs stay away from Ibanez. He needs to saty in the AL as a DH.

Frank Thomas shouldn't be offered arbitration. He'd accept it, hands down, and he'd probably get 10-12MM in arbi (since that was his total salary in 2008) and much less on the open market.
I could see Garret Anderson offered arbi though. Or, at least, being offered a new contract with the Angels.

Wow, time on the DL must really have a big effect considering Giambi's so far away from being a Type-B. He was an above avg producer when he played, pretty significantly in 2008.
Considering you won't have to give up a pick for the guy, Giambi's a nice little bargain if you can get him on a one-yr deal.

If Abreu is offered and signs with another team with a unprotected pick, that will give the Yanks 3 first round picks.

anyone know if a players rights can be traded? For instance, could the Mets trade for the rights to, say, Griffey, and then offer him arbitration?

The Yanks could end up with all those picks but it is highly unlikely. Especially considering that the Yanks are looking at Sabathia, Burnett, Tex, Sheets, etc. There is a very good chance that even with all the defects from the Yanks that they will not have a 1st round pick in the draft.

jakec - not sure about that.
I'm assuming that the player would need to clear through waivers until the FA period begins. Don't know for sure but that is my guess.

DominicanYanks-
I never knew the Yanks could get 3 first round picks.

I don't know how FA impacts it, but the waiver trades days are over for this year. As of September 29th, players on the 40 man roster could be traded without going through waivers, that is why Owings went to the reds then.

"I never knew the Yanks could get 3 first round picks."
Well they would get one from the team that signs him, one sandwich, and the one they already have. I am assuming that's how he came to the number 3.

bjsguess - you can only lose the picks you start with. You can't lose any compensation picks. At the very least, the Yankees are guaranteed the 1st round compensation pick they receive for not signing Gerrit Cole.
Mike A. - The rankings are based mostly on counting stats (including games played). There is some adjustments for games lost due to DL time, but it tops out at 60 days. Giambi's screwed because he only played half of last season.

"anyone know if a players rights can be traded? For instance, could the Mets trade for the rights to, say, Griffey, and then offer him arbitration?"
Yes, the Mets did that last year with Johnny Estrada and declined to offer him arbitration after they traded for him.

"I could see Garret Anderson offered arbi though. Or, at least, being offered a new contract with the Angels. "
I don't think he will be offered arb, because he will accept it and he would end up costing another $12 million or so. I do see the Angels, however, negotiating with him on a contract somewhere around $5 million a year.
