Schilling Rips Manny Again

Curt Schilling apparently ripped former teammate Manny Ramirez on his blog, 38Pitches.  The post was removed, but that didn't stop Evan Brunell from preserving the inflammatory portions.  According to Schilling, Ramirez made it clear that if he didn't get traded he might take the rest of the season off for his knee.

So with Manny gone, Boston lost one me-first distraction. Wonder how they could get rid of a another ...

who is the other me first guy on that team?

I don't know about everyone else but I hated, I mean HATED the Red Sox with Manny. I never knew why I hated them so much but I did. Right after he left I started to like this team. I like schilling because he's honest. If I was on this team I would have bashed Manny every day. I would have called him out in front of teamates. I would especially embarass him in the media. He's a little baby. He caused problems for all the players why anyone would stand up for him ever is beyond me. The Red Sox made a great move to gt Bay. He'll be paid only 7.5mill next year and will out play manny and this team will be better for him. It's just shameful that the people who had to deal with his dumb a$$ and say anything about their experience are considered the bad ones.

Did the redsox pay this guy a cool 8mm for his blogging skills? Maybe he could pick up the saturday am shift here at MLBTR.

I agree with Schilling, but its a totally a dead issue at this point, he doesnt need to put any more light on it, every sox fan and every other average intelligent baseball fan knew exactly thats what manny was going to do if he was a member of the sox in august. I think Schilling should shut up on this matter as well too. I liked both of these players when the PLAYED without issue, but there is a matter of Schilling getting 8 million from us this year to do nothing. I dont understand why Schilling needs to be the red sox organizations mouth piece

"Maybe he could pick up the saturday am shift here at MLBTR."

LOL! that would be an interesting idea! but i think he is probably pole positioning himself for an espn job, since he likes to be a journalist now adays

Derman: The one who, despite having nothing to do with the 2008 baseball season, feels the need to blog or call a radio station if his name isn't in the news every few weeks.

Schilling is the biggest piece of sh*t to the game not named Jose Canseco... all he does is complain and think hes the best. when hes really just a coward who screwed the red sox over a good amount of money when he knew he had nothing left in the tank....

Well schilling had a legit injury! He didn't lie about something. The sox gave him a physical he passed then needed surgery. How is that his fault?

"Schilling is the biggest piece of sh*t to the game not named Jose Canseco... all he does is complain and think hes the best. when hes really just a coward who screwed the red sox over a good amount of money when he knew he had nothing left in the tank...."

Thank you....
Amen

Schilling is a whiney, arrogant a-hole who only cares about his own self-promotion.

There's no doubt Manny behaved like a child, but honestly, how was this ANY different from previous seasons? The Sox FO enabled his behavior year after year. The blame is as much theirs as it is Manny's, who will look like an absolute GENIUS after he gets his many, many millions that were by no means guaranteed if he stayed in Boston, where he was seemingly hated by everyone in the organization, who only had the balls to do anything about it only after Manny put the ball in their court for the fifth year in a row.

well, he did have an injury in his pitching shoulder and opted for surgery that most likely would have kept him out for the year, he didnt want to do the rehab the red sox wanted him to do. he shouldve just opted out of the deal like keith foulke did alittle while ago, he pitched one side session for the A's, knew he couldnt pitch, opted out and "retired", he shouldve done that. he didnt wake up one morning with a shoulder injury right after he signed, he had it before and he didnt even bother to mention he was having problems. this usually wouldnt be a big deal with me, but for a guy that wants players to hold themselves to a higher standard and such like he keeps saying about other players, he should have looked inward on this matter and sat the year out

Jason Bay might play a better OF but he will not out play manny. manny can still hit .320 30-35 hrs 130 rbis. jason bay on his best year won't do that. yea manny is a headcase but he sure hit the ball

I have to agree with MarinerNation, curt schilling is one of the biggest pieces of garbage in sports. First the bullcrap about new yorkers being happy about tom brady and now this, talk about beating a dead horse. This a-hole is just mad nobody in boston gave a crap when he went down for the season. Very few people in sports boil my blood like this asswipe.

derman1984

thats very established, but he wouldnt have played to a 320 average with the sox, he wouldve played the knee injury to death. it was in our better interest to acquire bay, a lesser offensive player, but im completely satisfied with him, he might not be manny, but most arent. Bay is good enough to make me happy, hes a team player, runs to first base, drives to catch pop flys and loves playing for a winning team, as a sox fan that puts a smile on my face

While most people know Manny is a flake I wonder if an average baseball fan really knew how poisonous he was. Glad that Schilling did say something and offered a clubhouse perspective.

First off Schilling did the rehab even when the advise of his docto was to have sugery. The Sox screwed that up. Blaming that on schilling is just insane. Yeah schilling says a lot but I'd rather someone spoke the truth then having someone sabatoge a team. It's just crazy that people still defend manny and hate schilling.
04forever
Where is this info showing schilling was injured before? The sox did their due dilligence before signing him and it didn't work out. He didn't lie. We have no idea when the shoulder started hurting. It very well could have been the day after he signed!Maybe he went out for a throwing session and it got hurt. Stuff happens. Comparing that in any way to many making up injuries and throwing at bats is indefensible.
derman1984
Do you really think the Manny yo saw for 2 month is the many you'll see ever again? Added to the fact that he'll be a cancer. Bay's numbers will be very comparable considering his home run totals will jump with the monster. Add in defense and amount he'll be payed he is more valuable then Manny.

"paid" "you"
wow that is horrible spelling.

BJ, I'm going to guess that no baseball fans, average or rabid, know how much of a clubhouse cancer Manny was because we only know what the media tells us. Think Kirby Puckett; what we think we know is often not the whole story, sometimes the complete opposite story.

(And this "Manny would have tanked in August and Sept" stuff is such speculatory crap. He raked in July. To say that this midseason tantrum positively, definitely would have been different than every year prior where he kept right on hitting is silly.)

Bay's defense sucks, his arm sucks. He's no better than Manny according to the numbers (both -13 this season). And anecdotally, am I really the only one who thought an amazing number of balls fell in front of him in the Angels series?

its doesnt change the fact that giving back the money was also an option and voiding the deal before the start of the season, which really wouldve benefit the team to have 8 million dollars to spend to replace him, and he didnt.

i never said he lied, even if he did or he didnt is totally unimportant, he didnt want to give the money back, its greedy and not a team friendly move like he claims to be.

and i wasnt comparing manny and schilling, but it is a case of calling the kettle black, to be so outspoken unlike the other members of the team who were mum about both of these matters, meanwhile your in the middle of a controversy yourself.

Why does Manny constantly have to take crap from the media but Curt Schilling is just "telling it like it is"? Such a double-standard. Keith Law was right when asked about this, why are they treated differently; he said, "I can think of one difference." Schilling's so full of it and full of himself it's hard to even comment any more. Enough already.

Does Curt Schilling know what a huge joke he's becoming? The guy is just a generic conservative spewing out his opinions, and the only reason people care is because he played baseball. The guys opinion is completely worthless.

I always liked Schilling when he was on the mound, even before he was on the Sox... but really, dude, shut up and let it go!

I have a bad feeling he'll end up a commentator on FOX sports...

Yep, purple, he and Tim McCarver can tag-team in their Manny-bashing. Fun for the whole family!

Andrew is exactly right. The blame lies mostly on the Red Sox---both front office and players---for putting up with Manny's antics again and again. They created that Manny Monster for one reason--he is the best RH power hitter of his era. It finally came back to bite them----or did it?

It seems obvious to me that the Sox were/are doing anti-Manny P.R. work so they could justify a trade.

The facts are that 1)Manny was going FA--and wouldn't return 2)The Sox figured they could win with another RH hitter in left 3)Fans would be mad if they let Manny go and didn't win in postseason.

The more stories that "leak" out about "bad Manny" the better----for the Red Sox, who have to face questions about not winning in the postseason.

Bottom line: They had a pending FA and wanted a player in return. They got that, but faced scrutiny about letting their best hitter go---so out come all the anti-Manny "secrets".

"See," the True Believers say, "they really had no choice but to trade Manny".

I just wish that Schilling would quit making the news. I am sick and tired of hearing about what he thinks ever two seconds. He just needs to keep his fat mouth shut and pitch...or try to pitch again.

I have one question:

How do these comments have ANYTHING AT ALL to do with MLBTR with the exception that Manny was traded this year and is a FA?

In terms of actual baseball related stuff, Schillings comments mean nothing. And really in terms of anything, Schilling's comments mean nothing.

I wish he would shut up, and considering he won't, I just wish people would ignore him. And adding posts like this don't help.

I forward a motion to shun 38Pitches.

See, but the other issue is that Curt Schilling is sort of a moron..

I would rather hear the opinions of more intelligent people, or at least people who have some relevance.

In terms of the world, Curt Schilling is no more special than I am, and I haven't even graduated from high school yet.

Can someone set the record straight for me:

*The Red Sox wont commit to Manny's options until the end of the 2008 year.

*Manny wants to be a free agent at the end of the year so he can get a better contract at age 36 instead of age 38; and hires Boras as his agent to help him.

*Manny "dogs it" in the stretch leading up to the trade deadline and the Red Sox trade him because they are tired of his crap, clubhouse cancer, etc., etc.

So why didnt the Red Sox just promise Manny they wouldnt activate his options and in exchange Manny would (most likely have to) perform for his next contract AND the Red Sox would get drafts picks (or is that not applicable for someone entering free agency?).

Schilling is an idiot, the guy was a knucklehead for the majority of his career. He gets his act together later in his career and then adopts the holier than thou attitude, guy needs to just go away.

Have these comments been reported elsewhere? Again, I hear Manny is a flake all of the time. That's a far cry from quoting him saying that his knee will be injured for the rest of the season if his options aren't picked up.

The first situation you can almost laugh it off. The second situation should get you banned from baseball. As far as I know, Schilling is the only one telling it like it is.

Sure he is a guy who likes to run his mouth. Does that somehow disqualify him from making valid comments?

And this does have huge ramifications for the off-season. You can bet every single team negotiating with Boras will bring this up as a way to drive down Manny's price. Wouldn't surprise me at all to see some creative clause that attempts to prevent Manny being Manny going forward.

"Schilling is an idiot, the guy was a knucklehead for the majority of his career. He gets his act together later in his career and then adopts the holier than thou attitude, guy needs to just go away"

This is just too much. Schilling has a 10-2 Post season record, 3 20 win seasons, over 200 wins (216) and just because he has been writing in his blog abit too much this season about the laziest of Red Sox players this season, that he now needs to go away? This is not the 1st installment this season on Ramirez by far, only the hardest on him that I have seen and deservingly so from my point of view. Might even slow down some GM from throwing away insane money towards him and Boras on a 3-4 year deal and those forgetful knee injuries that Ramirez can't seem keep up with.

Schilling's arm was hurting last season also, that was why his velocity was down to 89-91mph on his FB, so no stranger there. The Sox were just hoping he had enough for 1 more season.

"Schilling is a whiney, arrogant a-hole who only cares about his own self-promotion."...

...and Jesus. Can't forget about Jesus.

*Manny "dogs it" in the stretch leading up to the trade deadline and the Red Sox trade him because they are tired of his crap, clubhouse cancer, etc., etc.

Manny didn't dog anything. He was the best hitter on his team when he was traded.

And Manny is a career .314 .411 .593 hitter, changed the culture in the Red Sox clubhouse, has played in 4 World Series and won 2, carried the Dodgers on his back while being a model citizen, and has a WS MVP to his credit. Oh, and he has never signed a near 10 figure contract with the full knowledge he couldn't perform.

If we are going to use stats to prove that a person is a good guy then Ramirez is a way better guy than Schilling. Schilling has always had issues with players on his team, Ramirez has zero down years through the course of his contract. Schilling sounds jealous, knowing he will not have the historical significance of Manny Ramirez.

Ramirez has basically been the target this entire season aince he began dogging it. No one else and I recall no one else that Schilling has gotten along with, unless they refused to give 100% between the lines, or slapped at the gloves of players tagging them out and such nonsense as that.

Schilling granted has a huge mouth and does not know when to shut up, yet he always gave 100% and expected it out of his teammates and because he was /is accessible to the media easily, does not mind letting it be known when players do not do likewise.

Manny is lazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzy, but good (when he wants to play).

I dunno how anyone critiques schilling here. Schilling dedicates himself to the game and has done so for years. He's not a greedy guy i'd say. This year he was ready to play for 8 mil to stay with boston. stuff happened and he couldn't play but the fact is he could have signed for at least 12MM elsewhere, and chose not to. Manny was violent toward his teammates and thought he was above everyone else. Theo put HIM in his place by trading him. Please dont look at this any other way. manny will get 4/100 at best.

its boras's fault but in the end its the players decision. manny didn't have to be a prick about the whole situation. Boras told manny to get out of the contract, and manny agreed to get boras paid.

I like schilling calling out manny. he basically says this team is too good to tolerate your attitude anymore. you are no longer the MVP of this team. We have Youk (potential MVP) we have pedroia (like .003 from winning batting title) We got Jason Bay (top 10 LF in baseball), and a pitching staff that is going to be dominant for years to come. this isn't the team with all role players (kevin millar type players) where manny is the leader. This isn't the team that needed 5-6 runs a game to win. Now 3 gets the job done. Mannys 20MM can be much better spent elsewhere and I think when they make a big signing or trade this offseason (peavy is good possibility, from what i've read the sox are the ones who might end up holding up this trade).

if peavy will go to AL of course... meaning the padres are ready to go

Here's a quote from boston herald for all you doubters.

"If the Sox were to include highly regarded first baseman Lars Anderson in a package with two of their best pitching prospects, talks between the clubs would certainly become interesting. But officials with other clubs believe the Sox consider Anderson to be virtually untouchable."

I dunno why anderson would be untouchable though. He's a great ballplayer, but they have Youkilis and Papi locking down first base for the next 5-10 years.

"only had the balls to do anything about it only after Manny put the ball in their court for the fifth year in a row."

This is outright false. The Sox had been trying, for years, to ditch Manny. He'd been requesting trades for more seasons than not and 2007 was about the only trade deadline I can remember since like 2002 where he wasn't crying for a trade at the deadline. The Sox tried year after year after year, but nobody was biting, his contract was too lucrative and too long and the only way the Sox would have been able to unload him would be for fifty cents on the dollar (Which happened anyway, but at least it wasn't as painful as it would've been had we had him locked in for more than another couple months). The closest they ever came was in the almost A-Rod deal with the Rangers where they would've had to send the Rangers Manny AND Jon Lester and others (Which is, to this day, about the best deal the Sox ever saw fall through), but the Union blocked that.

Saying a team that traded away Nomar Garciaparra and let Johnny Damon and Pedro Martinez walk away didn't "have the balls" to ship Manny and his antics out of town is being naive.

And 04Forever, Foulke's opting out was with the Indians in '07. He signed with them and then retired without throwing a pitch. He came out of retirement to pitch for the A's this season.

"While most people know Manny is a flake I wonder if an average baseball fan really knew how poisonous he was. Glad that Schilling did say something and offered a clubhouse perspective."

Are you serious? That is like Jeff Kent calling Barry Bonds a bad teamate. It is like OJ Simpson coming down on another guy for breaking the law. It is like Rosie O'Donnel calling somebody a fat slob. Anything that comes out of Curt Schillings mouth means absolutely nothing to me. Take your sock, go home, and shut the hell up Curt, cause nobody cares.

"And 04Forever, Foulke's opting out was with the Indians in '07. He signed with them and then retired without throwing a pitch. He came out of retirement to pitch for the A's this season."

What a funny thing that was when Foulke retired! Boston offered him arbitration, got RHP Bryan Price as the 1st round pick as compensation from Cleveland and then he retired in Spring training while with them and came back!

Good for Curt. I just wish that other guys who are friends with Manny like Cora and Ortiz would have said something.
