« Peavy Pursuit Affects Dempster, Wood | Main | Heyman's Latest: Manny, Martin, Jenks »
Mike DiGiovanna of the L.A. Times describes the Angels' strategy regarding free agent first baseman Mark Teixeira. He says that since Tex will test the open market regardless, the Halos will not make an offer within their exclusive negotiation period. So much for resolving the situation quickly.
The Angels do not want Scott Boras shopping around their offer to the Yankees, Red Sox, Orioles, and Nationals and driving up the price. Just a guess, maybe the Nats consider Josh Willingham their cleanup hitter acquisition and will back out of the Teixeira derby.
DiGiovanna adds that the Angels "plan a serious run" at C.C. Sabathia and could bid on A.J. Burnett. He also describes their stance on their own free agents aside from Teixeira:
The team will look to re-sign reliever Darren Oliver, is open to retaining closer Francisco Rodriguez and outfielder Juan Rivera, and seems lukewarm to the idea of retaining pitcher Jon Garland and outfielder Garret Anderson.

I would have loved it if the Angels would have locked up Tex before the window closed, but I agree with the move. It give the opportunity to match or exceed a Yanks or Sox offer.
I haven't received my Angels season seat invoice yet, but I have been hearing 20% increase from last year. If we can lock up Tex, Manny, or CC (or a combination)....I'll be there.

I don't even know why the Angels try. Didn't they read the Matt Holliday post? Every A's fan in America (yes - all 6 of them) came in and anointed the A's the AL West Champs.

It's looking more and more like if the Yankees are going to entice Sabathia they aren't going to have to make an insane offer. 7/160? I'm not saying they can't or won't but Yikes!

Meant "are" going to have to.

I'm hoping that the Nats don't drop out of the Tex derby over acquiring Willingham.
Don't get me wrong, I don't think the Nationals could offer Tex enough money to make him think coming here is a good idea, but it's really hard to look at Willingham, then look at Tex, and think "close enough."
Tex in the 4 hole and Willingham batting fifth is infinitely prettier than Willingham hitting cleanup in the rest of the sad sack Nats lineup.

i think its kinda sad the a's think they stand a chance against the angels in the division just because of one acquisition, the angels also should of atleast tried to sure him up before the deadline ended with a hard to beat offer especially if all the rumors about how much he loves it there is true that could of been a deciding factor plus if i were tex i would be disappointed they didnt want to show me how much they wanted me and put up a fight for my services, with that being said he most likely will end up in the AL east somewhere just hopefully not in pinstripes.

The Halo's really should try to keep Tex, even if it means topping the Yankees (or whoevers) offer. Seems like they need his bat more than they need CC's pitching. If they're competitive for CC I suppose they've got an edge since he's likes it out west. It's just tough to see how they're offense is going to be better next year with Vlad another year older, Anderson gone or back another year older. They could use Tex.

I know bjsguess, I guess we Angel fans are going to have wait til next year to try and challenge the A's for the AL West crown. lol

the angels dont need CC. i think this would be another ploy to drive the price so high on CC that the yankees wont want to throw out another huge contract for Tex. even if the Sox are interested i think Tex would choose Angels if the offers are close.

bjsguess -
didn't the M's do that last year after the Bedard trade? :P gee, i sure hope the Halos can figure out how to pry that title away...
on a more serious note, if the Angels can get Tex and perhaps Burnett... look out.

Smart decision. Considering how Boras works, giving him a figure to run to other teams with before absolutely necessary is a wise decision. Let the Yankees start the bidding and go from there.

i would love to have tex as a redsox player but i dont see that happening i see him in new york or washington that trade yesterday shows true rejuvenization and he could be enticed by it because the NL is so weak and playing against the braves all year he would have big numbers
Posted by: americans1901 | November 11, 2008 at 11:47 AM
Good now he will be a Yank.

This just goes to show how smart the Angels are when it comes to bidding. They allow the other teams to make mistakes for them. They did it with Vlad, they did it with Hunter and I see the same think with Tex.
"he could be enticed by it because the NL is so weak and playing against the braves all year he would have big numbers"
Ugh. No. Nada. Nein. You don't seem to get the whole NL/AL thing. Pitchers like to pitch in the NL because they face a below average-poor hitter in the 9 (8 if Tony LaRussa) spot, unless they run into a guy like Sabathia or Zambrano. For hitters, it doesn't make a difference. The main difference switching leagues makes for hitters is those that handle power pitchers or finesse pitchers better.

If I am the Angels, I sign no one this off season. Take the draft picks and use the cash to spend some extra money on high ceiling draft picks that slip in the draft. On the field take your chances with some of the young quality in the Angels organization.

this is just an idea that i had and i dont know if anyone else has thought of this but i think the angels shuold pursue pat burrel if the phillies dont resign him. They could let long time great garret anderson go as much as we all love him and also let juan rivera go. Pat BUrrel would be more effecient in the line up as a left fielder than rivera or anderson by providing support to the aging vlad and hopefully superstar tex next year
as for cc i dont think that will happen but that sure would be something if he could dominate for us next year like he did the brewers in the second half.
Also i think the angles should let k-rod go because jose arredondo is one hell of a pitcher and releivers tend to be better younger when they havent been seen as much around the league
