« Latest On A.J. Burnett | Main | Schulman On The Giants »
In his latest article, Tim Brown at Yahoo! Sports considers a possibility that others have discussed: maybe C.C. Sabathia doesn't want to play for the New York Yankees. He certainly has options--Brown's list includes the Dodgers, Angels, White Sox, Red Sox, Mariners, Tigers, and of course, the Brewers.
Not signing C.C. would increase the likelihood that the Yankees make a serious offer to Mark Teixeira. Nick Swisher seems to have the starting job at first base for now, but failing to land Sabathia might shift the Yankees' attention to all three of Teixeira, A.J. Burnett and Derek Lowe, says Brown.
Lowe might take his time before signing a new deal this offseason, with the news that Scott Boras is looking for the same average annual value obtained previously by Barry Zito ($18MM).
Finally, Brown notes that Padres GM Kevin Towers is waiting to hear from the Cubs about the possibility of continued trade talks regarding Jake Peavy, now that Ryan Dempster has been signed.

Hey, if he doesn't want to come to NY and is willing to leave that much money on the table, more power to him.
I just can't wait for all the Yankee haters to come back with "You didn't get CC, you guys are screwed!!!".

if the yankees don't get cc, i hear they are going to invest their 140 million on a genetic engineering lab, in which they will harvest their own cc sabathia clone.

Yankees can have Sabathia, Lowe, and Teixeira, just not Burnett. I thought Hughes was this big time name in the Yankees organization, yet they need to starters. They already have Wang, Chamberlain, Hughes, and most likely are going to get Pettitte. So, in my mind, they only need one of the three.

LOL
Why r the Tigers on Brown's list?

And if he does sign with the Yankees, how many minutes into the press conference does he utter the words "its always been a dream to wear the pinstripes"

LOL only in my wildest dreams does CC sign with my M's...HAHA
Posted by: MakinItMine | November 19, 2008 at 06:47 PM
Yeah. I wouldn't expect Lowe and Burnett to sign before Sabathia. No way, especially if the Yankees don't get CC, because Lowe/Burnett know the Yankees will come on real strong to get them.
Posted by: soupdujour | November 19, 2008 at 06:52 PM
If he didn't come to the yankees, i think he would not come to any East coast teams then. And if we did lose him i think you would see a trade for jake Peavy.
Posted by: yanks12025 | November 19, 2008 at 06:53 PM
It is amazing to see someone say that "maybe he doesn't want to play for the Yankees." You can't hear that from espn, you have to hear it from an unlikely source in Yahoo. More power to him and he needs to sign wherever he wants

"And if he does sign with the Yankees, how many minutes into the press conference does he utter the words "its always been a dream to wear the pinstripes""
OMG. Is it possible that it is NOT every players dream to wear pinstripes? What if the dream prom date says no? What do you do with that big corsage?

Bartolo Colon would like his genes back.

Yeah, god forbid the Yankees have a payroll one season that's not 10x league average. I mean--how could they possibly compete without outspending every other team!?!?
Posted by: fapelbon | November 19, 2008 at 07:08 PM
Earlier today it looked like the Giants would be added to that list of potential CC options. They will not beat the Yanks offer and it might all be a smoke screen from management to amp up fan interest but they do have a lot of money opening up in the next couple years. Last year they even reduced payroll because they didn't land any of the FA's they wanted. It wouldn't surprise me one bit if they jumped in and snagged on of the big fish this winter. I'm thinking Sabathia doesn't become a Yank just based on the fact that he hasn't said word one about looking forward to actually signing there....

OMG..Mick..it was S A R C A S M
Im fully aware that not every player wants to play in NY or for the Yankees. I am also fully aware that if CC comes here it will be because of the money. I was being sarcastic in that everyone says that even when most of us know they dont mean it.
Lighten up.

"And if he does sign with the Yankees, how many minutes into the press conference does he utter the words "its always been a dream to wear the pinstripes"
Actually a lot of teams have pinstripes incorporated into their uniforms, so he can still say that if he signs elsewhere. I really hate how people think pinstripes are a Yankees thing.
Posted by: mford | November 19, 2008 at 07:12 PM
someguynamedg...
Why would he say that when it is in his best interest, even if he wanted to be a Yankee since the day he was born, to get other teams involved and perhaps get into a bidding war?

"And if he does sign with the Yankees, how many minutes into the press conference does he utter the words "its always been a dream to wear the pinstripes""
First question, 30 seconds in. Just as he'll do if he puts on a Dodgers uni, giants, or hell even a royals... it's required.

"I really hate how people think pinstripes are a Yankees thing"
The Yankees are known for the pinstripes. No other team is. You mention "the pinstripes" to any player, or for that matter to any baseball fan and they will assume you are talking about the Yanks.
There is so much to hate on the Yanks and their fans for, Im sure you can do better than that.

just seeing the yankees huge payroll and them not making the playoffs makes me almost as happy as when they lost to the Marlins who's payroll was about 10% of the yankees

Why in the heck are the Mariners on this list? The morons who run this team have already said they won't spend money...even if it would be a smart move...
Posted by: baseballismylyf4 | November 19, 2008 at 07:30 PM
jtd-
The Marlins payroll was more than 1/3 the Yankees payroll. Heaven for bid you actually, I don't know, look something up.
Posted by: Thirty5Thirty6 | November 19, 2008 at 07:33 PM
Sorry yankeegirl49 but it's really hard to detect sarcasm through the thick fog of Yankee arrogance. We're Yankee haters for good reason.
Posted by: MickS | November 19, 2008 at 07:33 PM
Brown's list includes the Dodgers, Angels, White Sox, Red Sox, Mariners, Tigers, and of course, the Brewers
The WHITE SOX, M'S, TIGERS?????????????

If you mention pinstripes to anyone other than a Yankees fan and they think: The Great Satan. Jesus hates the Yankees.
Posted by: someguynamedg | November 19, 2008 at 07:39 PM
I am all for the Yankee bashing going on, but lets get real. If you are blaming them for outspeding league avg you need to look at your own team first. If your team is close to league avg spending then ok, then you can complain, but if your team is well over it as well stop complaining. And last year, league avg, was 89 million.

I wish CC signed with the Giants. So he can see how fun its going to be playing with that team.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | November 19, 2008 at 08:07 PM
CC would bat cleanup every day with the Giants.
Posted by: chavezchavez | November 19, 2008 at 08:29 PM
When i saw that we traded Swisher for nothing, i instanlty knew we were going to go after Burnett or Lowe. C.C Sabathia would love to play in Chicago but its going to require another trade to free up cap space.
Posted by: ChiSoxKilla23 | November 19, 2008 at 08:30 PM
...Or hopefully they dealt Swish because they're rebuilding. Hopefully!! We aint gonna compete with the Twinkies next year.
Posted by: ballerwhiteboy | November 19, 2008 at 09:43 PM
is it safe to say that most people who are not yankee fans in fact kinda hate the yankees? for myself this is true, but the hatred has been lessened by the fact that despite all of their spending they have how many championships to show for it? those great NYY teams of the 90's were a mixture of the big signing and stellar players from within the organization, and it's laughable that they don't seem to realize that harvesting another teams players does not a championship build.
Posted by: beercheesepain | November 19, 2008 at 11:21 PM
LOL chavez. I remember the first time i saw sabathia in person when the tribe was in milwaukee a few years ago and his first at bat the big man bangs a double off the left field wall. in the days leading up to his first start for the crew this year that hit was the only thing i could think of.
Posted by: beercheesepain | November 19, 2008 at 11:23 PM
thirty5thirty6,
Where did you get your numbers from, since you imply you actually looked something up. ESPN has the Marlins at $22.65 million in 2008 payroll, compared to $207.11 million. So the Marlins payroll works out to be 10.9% of the Yankees according to ESPN's numbers.
Feel free to post a link to the numbers you were using though...
Posted by: nixa37 | November 19, 2008 at 11:52 PM
beercheese -- actually the yankees do understand how the 90's teams were built.
Joba and Wang are homegrown.
Jeter, Cano, Melky, Gardner, Posada are all homegrown.
Mo, Coke, Robertson all homegrown.
I'm not even mentioning guys like Bruney, Veras & Ramirez who were all released from other organizations and found themselves and developed as part of the Yankee minor league system.
If Pettitte resigns, then 3/5 of the rotation is homegrown.
What exactly have the Yankees bought other than Arod (who they traded Soriano for), Damon & Nady/Marte (who they traded a ton of minor leaguers for).
I don't think too many other teams have the number of players who have been drafted or came up through their minor league system that the Yankees currently do.
The Yankee payroll is high because the players are good.
Mo, Posada, Jeter, Arod take up a ton of payroll and they all have earned it.
If the Yankees didn't pay them, other teams would have paid them.
So if they go out and buy 2 starting pitchers as free agents they've bought a championship?
BS, my friend and you know it is.
The Red Sox bought Manny & Ortiz so I guess I they bought those championships, eh?
They bought Dice K. They bought Schilling. They bought Drew.
Should I go on?

Dicky..
Don't even waste your time. The haters will never get it.
As long as they keep hating, I am happy. People don't hate teams that lose, they hate teams that win.
Posted by: yankeegirl49 | November 20, 2008 at 06:25 AM
nixa, are you serious? Using 2008 payroll when the Marlins beat the Yanks in 2003?
Posted by: Joe Pawlikowski | November 20, 2008 at 06:34 AM
ok those are some homegrown players but where did giambi, a-rod, clemens for a number of years, KEVIN BROWN, Bobby Abreu, Johnny Damon or Carl Pavano come from? And to that end, how many titles did those players bring as opposed to those fine teams of the 90's. whats BS is the fact that you dont see a difference in the attitude of that front office between '96 and 2008. Bottomline is that wild, irresponsible spending does not work and the new york yankees are proof.
Posted by: beercheesepain | November 20, 2008 at 09:14 AM
I dont know why people are getting so anxious on CC, the first big free agent signing last year was Tori Hunter on Nov. 22nd and everyone thought that was kind of a quick signing. I would give it another couple of weeks until this can be considered "dragged on".
