Boras Wants Posada Money For Varitek

5:49pm: Scott Boras held court regarding Varitek this afternoon.  He suggested Varitek should get a deal comparable to Jorge Posada's four-year, $52.4MM contract, which is ridiculous even for Boras.

11:01am: According to Sean McAdam of the Boston Herald, Red Sox GM Theo Epstein will meet with Scott Boras this week to discuss free agent catcher Jason Varitek.  Epstein would not be concerned if the situation remains unresolved well into the offseason.  Yahoo's Tim Brown suggested the Tigers and Dodgers as other possible fits for Varitek.

Varitek, 37 in April, earned $9MM in 2008.  If Boras can get him two years and $14MM it will be impressive.

I doubt Varitek would be interested in the Dodgers, especially considering he'd probably be a backup to Martin.

I can't see him going anywhere but Boston, to be honest. 2 years, $10 million.

Hopefully they sign Tek to a cheap 1 year deal plus an option and then get a young catcher like Salty or the Max Ramierz kid from texas

I've said it elsewhere and I'll repeat it here:

If the Dodgers signed Varitek and considered trading away or moving Martin to make room for him, it would be about the single most boneheaded move in the last decade.

If the Dodgers' management is actually that dumb, let 'em have 'Tek and we'll put together a swap of Lugo for Martin. That's no less ludicrous than moving a guy like Martin for Varitek. Hell, while we're at it, they can have Lowell in exchange for Kemp, Kuroda and Billingsley. That all sounds perfectly sensible, right?

LOL....Posada money? How do they compare? The only similarities between the two other than being catchers is that they're both switch hitters. Hey, but you got to like Boras for trying even if most of his ideas/proposals are ridiculous.

Are you kidding me?! Posada money for a catcher that can't even hit above .250?! Posada hit .320+ the year before he got his new contract. Absolutely ridiculous for Boras to get that much.

Any GM that falls for that bait should be shot in the face. Or fired on the spot.

That's a great plan. Maybe after Varitek signs that contract, he can get someone to sign Manny to a three-year, $300MM contract!

I want to punch Boras in his ovaries!

Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Boras should crawl in a hole and die.

LOL
Never happening
Dare I say.....
The yanks even overpaid for posada

What an idiot

Of course... that Posada contract ain't looking so hot right now

Posada can't do what tek can behind the plate. Case and point phil hughes and ian kennedy vs lester and masterson. Not to mention beckett, matsuzaka. Tek does it behind the plate posada does it at the plate. The reason tek doesn't deserve that much is cause neither did posada. He just plays for the yankees who notoriously overspend on old players. At least tek played this year...

Posada tipo de dinero! Él será la suerte de obtener incluso un viejo contrato que desperdicio de espacio. Ir a la Liga Nacional varijerk.

Good luck with that, Scott and Tek.

Dumbasses.

Everyone laughs now at Boras. Just like we did when last year when he postured that ARod was worth a 10/300 deal. A month later, after NO teams showed serious interest in him, the Yanks bid against themselves and signed him to an extension that was basically a 10/300 deal.

If anyone can get more than $5m/year for Varitek it's Boras. My bet - he lands a much bigger contract that virtually everyone here assumes he will get. Second prediction - the team signing him will instantly regret the decision.

It's not even that the Yankees overpaid for him. He was coming off the best statistical year of his career and his offensive numbers were staggering. Varitek was as close to an automatic out as you could get. His production was microscopic and he was a detriment to the lineup. It's only going to get worse the older he gets. I expect nothing less from Boras to try and get the most for his wallet as well as his client, but asking for 4 years at nearly 16MM per for an over the hill catcher who can't hit is outrageous. Going public just makes it seem like more of a reach and it makes his public image that much worse.

id rather take 100 kicks to the nuts

that is absolutely ridiculous. i don't even know what else to say.

hahahahahahahahahahha

Boras should have done stand-up comedy

2/10 or 3/13, anything else is lunacy.

Santana/Beckett FTW,

I'd hardly call what Jason Varitek did this year "playing."

Besides, you're completely cherry-picking your argument. It's not Posada's fault Ian Kennedy was walking 13 hitters per 9 innings, or that Hughes had injury problems.

Why not compare Buchholz and Joba? I realize Posada was hurt for a lot of this season, but he still caught Joba last year, and at the beginning of 2008.

Oh, right, because that would puncture a hole in your theory.

I think this brings one question to all of our minds: Where does Scott Boras get his crack?!

the possibility of russell martin to the sox for bucholz is seeming a whole lot more real now.

Santana/Beckett is such a homer.....haha. How can you blame the struggles of Hughes and Kennedy on Posada? Vtek

one of the most overrated players in the game the past few years. it upsets me everytime weiters is compared to him.

HA HA HA. I guess Boras "calls a great game" too. I would LOVE to see V-Tek get that much money just not for the Red Sox. PLEASE...At this point Kevin Cash is NOT MUCH WORSE than Varitek. And there are 3 Rangers that can be had for one of the Sox's prospects.

As long as some team keeps playing into Boras' numbers, he's going to keep doing it.

Vtek is a great game caller and probably a great leader but is that worth a raise since he's such a liability at the plate and does so poorly against stole base attemps 56 sb vs 16 cs?

God, please someone make a post bashing Scott Boras again, I can't get enough of them.

If you can't come up with something, pick a person and call them a homer.

What is Boras smoking?

I also like how people say V-Tek's off-field personal troubles were to blame for his offensive struggles, yet it didnt seem to affect his defense, game calling or throwing runners out at 2nd...OH WAIT..he kinda sucked at that too.

See ya later Jason!

"Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Boras should crawl in a hole and die."

Why? For being the best by far in the world at what he does?

For all of you calling him an idiot/dumbass/cracksmoker etc. You just don't get it. You all go nuts every time Boras makes some proclamation like this, but you are too stupid to realize that this is just part of what he does. He is an agent. And a damn good one. Anybody questioning the way he goes about business is the real idiot/dumbass/cracksmoker. You may as well question the way MJ played ball, or the way Tom Brady plays QB, or the way Albert hits a baseball. He may well be a tool as a person, but you have to be sort of a scum bag to be a good agent. It is what he does. I can't believe people still react like this when Boras speaks. Just let him do his thing, and get his guy paid. Obviously Tek is not worth Posada money, we all know.

HES GOT THE REEFER MADNESS!

Arodsucksatlife and Bj are the only people who get it. It is sick how year after year Boras makes some crazy statement and everybody gets in a uproar about it. Then he gets his guys more money then anybody expected. Then,

... the next year, it starts all over, with the same people still sitting here talking about what a moron Boras is. It is just a never ending cycle.

Type Key cut half my post in half. Is that a new feature?

I must have been high when I said that. But hey, it works!

Good luck trying to get a 37 year old guy who only had a .220 average that kind of money,if they don't back down the Red Sox need to move on,they moved on from Pedro Martinez,Johnny Damon, and Manny Ramirez they'll be fine without him.

blah blah blah.

It's called posturizing. Boras's job is to get his client, Varitek, money. If GMs give in to his "demands", they are morons.

Most GMs are intellligent enough to understand that Varitek does not deserve Posada money, and the market will be the key determinant of Varitek's contract. Well, at least Bavasi and LaMar are out of jobs.

I'm not siding with Boras, but you really think he's gonna go out and say "He should get 2 years/10 million"? You may all think he's crazy, but there's a reason why he's the most powerful sports agent.

Type Key is full of new features. Just when we thought it couldn't get better than having to sign in every other post Type Key ups the anty by dropping your message half-way through.

I love this site but I loathe Type Key.

"the possibility of russell martin to the sox for bucholz is seeming a whole lot more real now."
if anything wouldnt the dodgers stop and think?

hey?!
lets send our lightly paid allstar "5 tool" catcher to the redsox make them 5 times better and then sign tek for a boras in your face contract?
please god please no

i hate type key. tim i think when there is alot of us on this crap ass program it freaks out

I don't think anyone here actually thinks that Boras believes what he says half the time. It's just funny that he actually has the balls to say it. But you only need one GM/owner to drink the koolaid. Who would've thought that Arod would've signed a $250 million dollar deal with Texas and then a few years later sign one bigger? Who thought that the Sucks would sign Drew for that ridiculous amount of money? WHo thought the Sucks would pay $50 million just for the rights to TALK to a player? Who thought that after coming off an abismal year that Andru Jones would get a 2 year/$36 mil? If I was a ball player looking for a big payday I'd want him to be my agent too.

ahhh i hate it!!!

hey, i agree with you, russell martin in an elite backstop, but your team is the one coming out with all of this not me. if your gonna just convert him to play third, you might as well trade him for a wicked 3rd base prospect, something the sox dont have other then lowrie but i dont think hes good enough alone and i think we will keep him. i dont know, will see, its really early to speculate on that kind of trade, give it a month

I get that he's doing his job, but there is a point of greediness. He has been kinda a jerk through his career too. I just think it's bad for baseball because I think he really controls a lot of these players and there decisions, like Joe Crede for instance. Crede likes the Sox, but KW and Boras bug the HELL out of each other so Joe wont be back. I think there might be some change if Boras would have stepped aside.

and really guys, stop the drug comments. there not funny, your just saying taking what the previous commenter said and replacing the drug name with a slang word.

yeah i dont think the dodgers would leak that info..

Peter Gammons!!!!
one of the most well known red sox fans.
he also said the yankees are going after martin.

Posadas contract was a reward for being a great player and leader in the clubhouse all these years, same thing with mariano. Yanks obviously needed them both abck and can afford it so they hooked up a couple of the 4 ring crew.

well, for now its not true, but will see, peter may have bias, but he gets stuff right from time to time. will see...

Varitek is washed up, I hope Boras wises up and the big V signs back with Boston, it'll be the 2nd best move for the Yankees, Varitek stinks. The last thing Yankee fans want is Boston to go out and trade for Salty or Martin. Peter Gammons is a Boston shill

"The last thing Yankee fans want is Boston to go out and trade for Salty or Martin. Peter Gammons is a Boston shill"

That's because Yankees fans generally take a cookie-cutter approach to baseball, and parrot what is spoon-fed to them. Right now, young catchers are trendy, so the "in" thing to do is to acquire one at any cost. I assure you that if it cost Boston something in the neighborhood of Buccholz, Lowrie, and another top prospect, not to mention the escalating salary that Martin will command in arbitration, then it would be in the Yankees' best interest to see Martin in red socks. It's significant that the going rate for starting pitchers is about $1M per victory, at a time when Buccholz is cost-controlled.

If the Red Sox had to give talent to get "Salty," as he is affectionately known among those who overrate him, then the Yankees should be overwhelmed, particularly if it means Boston were stuck with a defensive butcher of a backstop or a .750-.800 OPS first baseman they don't need.

No matter what team you support, you kind of have to admire the Red Sox/Theo Epstein for their ability to set limits on players and walk away when those limits are surpassed.

Damon/Pedro were not resigned because they (in the Sox mind) surpassed their worth. The teams that signed these players have not gotten good value out of these guys at all.

With Manny this year, the Sox felt he surpassed his worth to the team when his distractions became to much to bear and they ended up downgrading on the talent side, but upgrading on the team unity side which led to a spot in the ALCS.

With Varitek, I expect they will do the same....set a limit on his value and refuse to budge from that ceiling. Boras knows the Sox well and I doubt he will try to call their bluff with Tek, because he probably knows they won't be bluffing.

Despite what many think, Kevin Cash offers many of the intangibles of Tek with regards to defense/game calling. Offensively, he is no gem, but neither is Tek.

and could someone consider giving J.R House a chance already?

How many seasons in the minors does this guy have to hit .300 with around an .800+ OPS for someone to give him a shot.

At 28yrs old, he has just 60 career MLB at bats; yet his minor league numbers would suggest he is capable of posting better numbers then Gerald Laird
