Personally I think that Phillies should keep that core intact. Unless they can find someone to overpay for Ryan Howard, I wouldn't make any huge moves outside of resigning or replacing Burrell.

never heard the Phillies linked with Baldelli before, but they could actually be a good destination for him, taking over the So Taguchi role in their OF rotation: Werth RF, Victorino CF, Burrell/FA LF, Jenkins 4th OF, Baldelli 5th OF. wouldn't require him to play too often.

I don't see Baldelli going to Philly. There's no incentive for him to go there.

I really can't see the Phillies having the pieces to trade for both Atkins & Holliday. plus, they should really be looking at younger players if they're going to swing a big trade. Atkins, Holliday, Utley, Rollins, and Howard are all going to be 29-30 next season. they'd basically be going all in to repeat in 2009 or 2010, and I doubt they'll have as much luck with their pitching as they did this year.

i see the phils looking into mags to play rf and move werth t lf

Phillies fans won't want to hear this....and I am a Phillies fan, this is what I think they do:
Sign Emil Brown to a one year deal to platoon with Stairs in leftfield.
Keep Feliz/Dobbs platoon at 3rd.
Re-sign Moyer
Sign Kip Wells and Carl Pavano, let them battle with J.A. Happ for 5th starter spot.
Sign Paul Bako to 1 year deal until Marson is ready. (Coste will be released).
SS - Rollins
CF- Victorino
2B - Utley
1B - Howard
RF - Werth/Jenkins
LF - Brown/Stairs
3B - Feliz/Dobbs
C- Ruiz
I don't like it either, but this is what it is really shaping up to be.

How is that "what it is shaping up to be"? Free agency hasn't even started yet, dude.
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 03, 2008 at 12:33 PM
@7thInningStretch
Just wow!
Emil Brown, Kip Wells, Pavano, AND Paul Bako. Where do you get this stuff?
Posted by: Groty | November 03, 2008 at 01:16 PM
You guys must not know Ruben Amaro too well.
With the raises due to Hamels, Howard, Victorino (and 7 other players), there will not be payroll available for a Holliday or a Ordonez. They will sign someone such as Brown to fill the other outfield spot....and bring in some guys who will fight for a roster spot (pitchers like Wells, Pavano...remember they had success with Chad Durbin last season and hitters like Bako to provide depth).
Why completely makeover a World Series championship team?
Posted by: 7thinningstretch | November 03, 2008 at 01:37 PM
I agreed its not like anyone is off the market yet
Posted by: derman1984 | November 03, 2008 at 01:39 PM
its not making over a team when your losing a bat out of the lineup like burrell you have to replace it and brown isnt gonna do it. thome flash and burrell will come off the books next and the year after that eaton will be off the books as well. so the money will be there reguardless

"Why completely makeover a World Series championship team?"
Why put Emil Brown on a World Series championship team?
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 03, 2008 at 01:47 PM
If anybody gives up anything of value for Atkins and his career 752 OPS outside of Coors ... well, let's just say I hope its not the Phillies who make that mistake.
Posted by: Bourne's_Identities | November 03, 2008 at 02:26 PM
"Why put Emil Brown on a World Series championship team?"
Why overpay for a Matt Holliday (who can't hit outside of Coors) or a Magglio Ordonez who would prospects not just $$?
The Phillies will bring in an Emil Brown, Kevin Mench, Juan Rivera type to fill Burrell's spot.
I never said that I liked this move, in fact I hate it.
Posted by: 7thinningstretch | November 03, 2008 at 02:40 PM
Agreed on not overpaying for a corner and the Holliday opinion, but Brown really, really stinks. They'd be better off just finding some AAAA player (or Rivera).
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 03, 2008 at 02:49 PM
I don't think Matt Holliday is a good fit for the Phillies, but it is worth noting that he has a career .903 OPS at CBP. and even if he isn't a 1.200 OPS player outside of Coors, he's still at least worth an .850 OPS.
and 7thinning, there's a whole lot of difference between doing nothing (which is essentially what signing Emil Brown is) and pursuing the top FA/trade targets during the offseason. the Phillies have a track record of avoiding the big names, but they do make some moves.

its not going to take that much to get mags cause you would be taking on that contract. the tigers are trying to dump salary. i think that they would take less prospect say jason donald and ja happ or kendrick for him as long we take on his salary. i think that the tigers would do that to get rid of the salary
Posted by: derman1984 | November 03, 2008 at 03:40 PM
They had better make a run at Peavy. If they win, it may open holes elsewhere (do they give Victorino - would you even do that to get Peavy)
In LF, I agree with 7th and see Mench or Baldelli given the FO has been attracted to them in the past and they will be cheap platoon guys to go with Jenkins/Stairs until Golson is ready (if ever).
I would only go after Atkins if the price is cheap - bad defense and bad road/home splits.
I would like Maggs if the Tigers eat some salary and take Eaton and/or Jenkins salaries.
But mainly I WANT JAKE PEAVY - thats it.

I don't wanna resign pat the bat- but I like the idea of juan Rivera taking over the spot- he'll be cheap and great- resign moyer and eyre- we don't need another pitcher. We have moyer, hamels, myers, blanton, happ, kendrick and carrasco could make his debut next year. I would like magglio but I would not give up donald bc he's the future at 3rd, maybe like an andrew carpenter, we don't need another outfielder bc stairs, dobbs, and brunlett can both play in the outfield. Signing pete orr would be good and making kendrick in a long reliever would be good

I think that the phils could use a solid reliever, an everyday right fielder, and maybe a back end starter. They could just a reliever instead of dealing for someone when they need to keep the top tier talent they have. For an outfielder, maybe like someone said sign Emil Brown, or if they want to make a splash sign Manny (doubt it) and then ship off two lower level prospects like Dominick Brown and Jason Jamarillo to the Cubs for Chad Gaudin (he's shown he can be an effective starter just needs a place to do it) And they could be shaping up a pretty decent team.

"And they could be shaping up a pretty decent team."
yes, maybe some time soon they could win a world series.
seriously man, wtf...
Posted by: ae | November 03, 2008 at 07:12 PM
Werth is the everyday RF; he certainly has the arm to stick. Filling LF shouldn't be too hard; there are always capable Dellucci types looking for jobs.
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 03, 2008 at 07:17 PM
The Phillies need to sign either Burell or Jayson Werth to an extension. We can not depend on Greg Golson to come around in case anyone was thinking so and we won't have any OF's ready before 2010. Most of our top prospects asides from Jason Donald and Lou Marson are pitchers which should keep us from signing any big names for the next couple of years. I would prefer we cut loose Moyer for the two pics we will get in return. Our rotation for next year should look like
Hamels
Myers
Blanton
Happ
Carrasco
On second though having Moyer around to help tutor the young guys may be worth it. Only for the hometown discount though.
Whoever loses out on the Teixera signing could be looked as a potential Howard trade candidate.
Posted by: Jimmy Jam | November 03, 2008 at 07:23 PM
Depends on the team, probably. I have the feeling a lot of the more analytical teams are valuing Teixiera's glove pretty highly so Howard is a different type altogether.
Posted by: Not Joe Morgan | November 03, 2008 at 07:39 PM
Trade for holiday... simple.. he would be a PERFECT fit for this team... compliment Utley and Howard be a better and more consistent left fielder and a better bat it would be huge... loosing burell will hurt the Locker room but bring in Holiday will re energize the entire team and this and signing one more solid SP will give us the best chance on repeating next year
Posted by: adam44is | November 04, 2008 at 04:09 PM
Heh, I love all of the support for Carrasco. Looking at past history of the phillies, what makes you think he's going to be the 5th starter.. Honestly, they don't NEED him as of right now and they are looking into a 5th starter, but aren't chasing anyone considering they have Happ (and maybe Krappy Kendrick) if needed. Carrasco call up is unlikely unless injury occurs, similar to Happ going up and down all season.
Jayson Werth is the everyday right fielder. Regardless of what you think, he'll be fine.
Matt Holliday/Manny Ramirez/Magglio Ordonez are extreme stretches. Highly doubtful. They are all too high of an asking price. If they do not resign Burrell, likely to have any kind of platoon you can think of (Dobbs, Bruntlett, Stairs, Jenkins, Golson). However, it wouldn't surprise me if Burrell resigns for a lower asking price due to his love for Philadelphia.
Phillies repeat 2009. :)
