Stark's Latest: Abreu, Arroyo, Hudson

ESPN's Jayson Stark is back with a look at needs and plans for all 30 teams.  I highly recommend you read the article, but here are a few highlights.  He's also got a fresh blog post here.

  • The Phillies are eyeing Doug Brocail and Russ Springer.
  • The Mets like Bobby Abreu, but not his three year, $45MM asking price.
  • The Reds are quietly listening on Bronson Arroyo, and the Rangers may be interested.
  • Contrary to previous reports, Stark believes the Mets' first order of business is getting a starting pitcher.
  • Here's a new one - the Marlins are interested in Orlando Hudson?
  • The Astros may be trying to move money, and Stark implies trading Miguel Tejada or Jose Valverde could be one path.
  • The Rockies have "actively explored" signing Jeremy Affeldt, who could also wind up back home with the Mariners.  A few more interesting names for Seattle: Joe Crede (if Adrian Beltre is traded), Jason Giambi, and Ken Griffey Jr.

Didn't Loria say something about raising Marlin payroll to 40MM?

The Marlins are only trading guys who have immediate replacements (Olsen-Miller, Willingham-Maybin,Jacobs-Sanchez,Gregg-Lindstrom).

Orlando Hudson makes zero sense though. Too expensive.

Money-wise Hudson probably doesn't fit, but personnel wise he would be a perfect fit for the Marlins. Allows them to move Uggla to first (or to third and Cantu to first.) Gives them much stronger defense up the middle. I like the idea if they could afford him.

here comes all the mets with crazy trades that they acquire valverde

Orlando Hudson? What?

Why would the Marlins ever sign Orlando Hudson? He is probably want 10 million a year, and the Marlins budget is like $0 million right? And they already have a second baseman in Dan Uggla, and didn't they just trade two of ther best players to the Nationals for Emilio Bonifacio a 2nd Baseman. This rumor makes no sense to me unless they were trying to trade Dan Uggla. Which they probably aren't.

marlins are scarier than the braves imo as a mets fan

melonis, uggla, hanram, hudson, cantu is certainly a serviceable infield. hudson certainly helps out with defense up the middle.

Milwaukee should sign Orlando Hudson not Florida.

If the Reds trade Arroyo...here are my two questions...

Who replaces his 200 innings and 15 wins? Do we sign a FA pitcher, or do we aquire one in a trade.

Who would the Reds get in return? Laird would be my guess...

I think the Swisher salary dump is leading to a Hudson signing.

the money saved on dealing arroyo could allow the reds to get into the bidding for say a derek lowe and arroyo could get something better than laird

It would be ironic if the Marlins signed Hudson. The irony is that they just traded 4 players might make about as much as him total per year yet none of them could be considered average (maybe Gregg, but I don't think he's that good). And instead of 4 below average players they would have one above average player. Quality instead of Quantity. I still doubt it happens though.

And Ceda is a good pickup by them. And fair to the Cubs since Gregg will also be worth 1-2 draft picks (plus being able to let Kerry Wood go and collect those draft picks).

I think Arroyo for Laird is about even.

Arroyo get something better than Laird with 4.77/1.44 whip/ .281 BAA ?

Texas already has two >30yo pitchers with those #'s.

Arroyo would get rocked in Texas.

yes arroyo would get more than an overweight overrated laird

I think Laird for Arroyo is about even, in that neither team is coming out of it much better than they started.

ARROYO WILL NOT BE TRADED FOR FAT LAIRD YOU CAN BOOK THAT

From what I'm hearing about the way Bailey is looking now that they let him go back to his old mechanics (which weren't all that bad in the first place), I feel he could step in and put up comparable numbers to Arroyo. I would love to see the Reds pick up Salty for Arroyo and maybe a couple other pieces going one way or the other

PLEASE NO ABREU ON THE METS!!!! Okay, I said it. Man, that feels good to get off my chest. It's truly painful to watch that man try to play baseball. Plus, he's yet another player with no heart and no desire to win. All he cares about is money, stat padding, and staying away from that scary wall in right field. Don't we have enough of that already? Omar is smarter than this. I believe. You gotta.

Arroyo had about five bad starts which jacked his ERA up, ESPECIALLY the one where he gave up 10 Earned Runs in less than an Inning of work. So, just like 2007, he kept the Reds in MOST Games that he started. The difference is, in 2007 the Offense DIDN'T come through for him (like Harang at the start of 2008).

Since Starting Pitching is the hardest and most expensive thing to find and/or keep, trading Arroyo is just plain STUPID!!!

Arroyo has a team friendly contract and without him, what do the Reds do?

For 2009, will Volquez and Cueto stay close to their 2008 numbers? Will Harang revert back to his form of 2006 and 2007? Are they REALLY counting on Homer Bailey to improve THAT much???

Also, with EVERY team seemingly wanting Catching help, even end of the bench scrubs are going to be WAAAAAYYYYYYYYY overvalued this year. So if the Reds want a REALLLY good Catcher, they should just package Homer Bailey, Alex Gonzlez and ?? and trade them to the Giants for Bengie Molina and Randy Winn. If that doesn't work then they should just bring David Ross back and forget about it.

The Reds are NOT in Play Off contention and it would be JUST PLAIN STUPID to trade Arroyo (and open up a hole in the rotation) just to overpay for one of the Rangers Catchers.

Getting rid of Arroyo's salary would be partially offset by whatever the new Catcher's salary is. Plus, Arroyo KNOWS how to pitch in Great American Small Park. That can NOT be said about guys like Burnett or Lowe who pitch in more pitcher friendly ball parks.

So, what happens if the Reds trade Arroyo for some secodn rate Catcher and then spend the BIG BUCKS on anothe starting Pitcher and the new Catcher stinks and the Pitcher can NOT adjsut to Pitching in such a hitter friendly ball park as GASP?

I say just keep Arroyo, a known quantity and fill in the other hooles as best as possible.

I personally think Stark is full of crap when it comes to the Astros trying to dump salary. The only thing I could come up with from his standpoint on them trying to get rid of some payroll was him going off some of those crazy trade rumors about Valverde going to the Mets or the Tigers in a deal for Peavy. I wouldn't be too terribly surprised if Tejada was traded(it is highly unlikely and I doubt it), but not Valverde, unless they decide to give up around the deadline. If they plan on dumping salary why not go ahead and try to rebuild?

"Money-wise Hudson probably doesn't fit, but personnel wise he would be a perfect fit for the Marlins. Allows them to move Uggla to first (or to third and Cantu to first.) Gives them much stronger defense up the middle. I like the idea if they could afford him."

Hudson makes no sense at all. His defense is declining and his price tag makes no sense for a Florida team that could easily just plug in the $400K Emilio Bonifacio at second and probably get pretty decent production.

And really, Arroyo for Laird is a pretty fair deal. Arroyo's number were pretty unimpressive last season, and this was with a 3.97 ERA AT HOME and a 5.76 ERA ON THE ROAD. That's nuts. The guy pitches better in a big time hitters park than he does on the road. I don't know what to think of that, but Laird's value is pretty high right now, and I wouldn't expect the Rangers to even consider moving one of the young catchers for Arroyo unless there was a prospect (Juan Francisco?) going back to Texas as well.

"The Astros may be trying to move money, and Stark implies trading Miguel Tejada or Jose Valverde could be one path."
Who would close then for the Astros? Trading Valverde would be very dumb. I also doubt any team would take on Tejada's contract. Drayton McClain simply needs to agree for once in his life to have the payroll over $100 mil.

anyone else love the term "quietly listening"?

"SHOOOSH, i'm trying to read the paper, please stop listening so loudly!"

i just dont see how or why you would trade arroyo for laird

arroyo is good for 200 inning and somewhere between a 4 - 4.5 era.

now lets look at ryan hanigan

minor league career

.294 avg , .382 obp , .372 slg , .754 ops

with the reds this year

.271 avg , .367 obp , .365 slg , .732 ops

now laird

mlb career avg.

.255 avg , .306 obp , .383 slg , .689 ops

so why would you trade someone like arroyo who gives you 200 innings and is reliable for laird when you have a younger better option already ? makes no sense at all and thats why arroyo will not be traded for laird

wait? Doug Brocail? The Phils won the WS, had an additional 25 million approx in playoff revenue at minimun and this is how Jayson expects them to spend it? Go get a corner bat and another SP.

Oh and any chance of a swap of 3B with our old friend Ed Wade?? I loved Feliz in the field, but Tejada would be nice!

philsWSchamps,
HAHAHAHAHA! Here's an idea: the 'Stros trade Tejada to the Phils for Lidge. Would you take that one?

"Dear Phillies and Brad Lidge,
Just kidding.

Regards,
Ed Wade"

That would be great.

philsWSchamps, ever hear of arbitration raises?

Cole, Madson, Blanton, Werth, Victorino, Howard, etc, etc...all are going to get a nice little salary hike

Why didn't the Marlins keep willingham and dump hermida. willingham is so much better.

Here is why Arroyo had a 5.76 ERA on the Road last year;

June 24 at Toronto -
1 Inning, 10 Earned Runs.

Remove that ONE start and Arroyo's Road ERA drops to 4.81.

Remove that one Start and Arroyo's overall ERA drops to 4.34 from 4.77.

That is just the way it is with Arroyo. A few starts a year he really stinks but for the rest of them, he keeps the Reds in the ball game.

I MUCH prefer that to somebody like Josh Fogg or Homer Bailey, guys who pretty much stink EVERY start and who pretty much do NOT give their team a chance to win the game.

"Oh and any chance of a swap of 3B with our old friend Ed Wade?? I loved Feliz in the field, but Tejada would be nice!"

Tejada makes $13 mil in 2009, Feliz will make less than half of that. Plus do you want Tejada playing 3B when he is a below average fielding SS. Tejada had a better offensive season in 08 than Feliz, but not that much better. If I were the Phils I would not make that trade.

Face it, if the Reds want a Catcher who is decent at calling the Game and throwing out base runners while having a low Batting Average and with some power, they might as well sign David Ross.

Heck, I can not understand why they got rid of him instead of Baker Boy Paul Bako last year. At the time Ross was released, he had a higher Batting Average, On Base Percentage, Slugging Percentage and OPS than Bako.

But I guess Baker, the "genius" Manager and "great" evaluator of talent knows best.

Yeah right!!!!!!!!!

If the Phillies were going to trade with the Astros for a 3B, wouldn't they probably prefer going for Wigginton instead of Tejeda? I think I would.

That is BS metsobsessed.

Abreu was one of the more productive players on the Yankees last season, and wathcing them all-season, it wasn't stat padding. His RISP w/ 2 outs he hit .382 with a 1.051 OPS. Of course, he doesn't want to win at all. He just happens to get the better pitches to hit, unlike all the other players in the league.

He walked 73 times, he stole 22 bases, he hit 20 HRs, he hit .296 and had 39 doubles - you are telling me the guy has no passion? Please, players don't put up stats like that if they lack passion.

Abreu has passion.

He just NEEDS to be OUT of the field ASAP. The Yankees need to stop crowding the OF with DHs.

arroyo is a league average pitcher who just signed a new deal for 12.5M a year.

how is that club friendly?

the rangers already have two league average pitchers at that rate, they don't need a third. like i said, this is a deal that isn't very sexy for either team.

i don't think abreu to the mets is a good fit anyway... i would think they'd be more inclined to sign a right handed bat if they could... maybe pat burell?

"wait? Doug Brocail? The Phils won the WS, had an additional 25 million approx in playoff revenue at minimun and this is how Jayson expects them to spend it? Go get a corner bat and another SP.

Oh and any chance of a swap of 3B with our old friend Ed Wade?? I loved Feliz in the field, but Tejada would be nice!"

Oh, god.
We don't need another SP(key word: need), but it would be OK if cheap.

Arbitration will take all of the extra WS revinue, so don't think that we'll see any of that money. Seriously.

Feliz is not worth Tejada. Similar in age (T-34, F-33).. Feliz is spectacular defensively (most of the time), and has more upside then Tejada. And to be honest, you really have no idea how old Tejada is.. who knows if he was telling the truth. Feliz will be better next season.
