« Odds and Ends: Shelton, Laird, Baldelli | Main | Marlins Interested In Ronny Paulino »
According to ESPN's Jayson Stark, the Rays are telling inquiring teams that shortstop Jason Bartlett would only be available in a "major deal." Stark wonders if Jeremy Hermida would qualify. A bit of a tough match in that Hanley Ramirez is entrenched at short in Florida.
Stark is also hearing that the Rays would never take Delmon Young back.

Does Bartlett make sense for San Diego? Peavy is a supposed dark horse for the Rays... Of course Bartlett isn't enough for Peavy, but this is a start.

What was Stark smoking when he wrote this? Why would the Marlins trade Hermida for Barlett when they have a guy by the name of Hanley Ramirez at shortstop? Barlett is God awful to top it off...

would the Marlins trade Hanley? For anything?
If im the Reds I'd throw them..
Bailey, Thompson, Fraizer, Soto, and Stubbs....but of course most people on this board dont like 2 #2s, and 2 slugging infielders, and a defensive leadoff stuff wouldnt be enough....

Maybe Stark thinks Florida is looking to trade Hanley? I wouldn't think so, but he would bring a ridiculous return.

"Barlett is God awful to top it off..."
Yeah thats right, thats why he was named team MVP. While he didnt hit a ton of home runs or play gold glove defense all year, he was the heart of the teams and contributed tons of ways. First off, his hip injury hindered him all year and led to his worst defensive season ever. He led the AL in BA against LHP, had 20+ stolen bases, 2 key home runs in the postseason, always put the ball in play, and hustled his but off. On paper he was not great at all, but games arent played on paper.

"Maybe Stark thinks Florida is looking to trade Hanley"
No. If they ever did get another shortstop, which they wouldnt, they would prob move Hanely to the outfield, or second with Uggla moving to third or first.

I have read numerous times that the Marlins are hoping to move Ramirez to the outfield. He is absolutely HORRIBLE at shortstop. So, what Starks says makes perfect sense. They trade Hermida for Bartett. Ramirez goes to the OF and Bartlett plays short.

I don't think Stark is so 'out there' with this idea. Its widely known that Hanley Ramierez is a pretty bad defensive SS, (between 06-08 HanRam was the 2nd worse SS behind Jeter according to the Fielding Bible) why not move him. His bat could play anywhere in the outfield, he's athletic enough for center he could move there like BJ Upton did. Now they have acquired Maybin so one could go to the corner or move Hanley to 2nd where where he wouldn't be as big a liablity. Than you can move Uggla and his bad MI defense to the corner, thus helping in two areas.
GmblngPtchr20: no way the Fish would take that deal for Hanley. They have a decent system they don't need solid prospects they need stars. They could get enough of those types for Cantu, Hermida ect.

The Rays could always trade Price, Bartlett, and another top pitching prospect (Jermey Hellickson ?)for Hanley.
Rays can afford to give up pitching to get a major bat like Hanleys.

Right - forgot about Hanley's defense, and the possibility of moving him. I also don't think the Rays would ever, ever trade Price. I wouldn't.

Vitters to the Rays, Bartlett back to the Pads in a Peavy swap? Just a thought....
Cubs get: Peavy
Rays get: Vitters (not sure they need him with Longoria inked forever)
Pads get: Bartlett, Marshall, Veal, Pie and a throw in ?

BaseBallz: Rays would never make that trade. Its not that they couldn't afford or want Hanley, or that the deal is pretty close in value, its that it goes against their philosophy. The Rays won last year with Pitching and defense why would they sacrifice that for Hanley. The Rays will have the best rotation in baseball next year, and I say that no matter what the Yankees, Cubs, or Red Sox do.
Kazmir, Shields, Garza, Price and Sonnastien/Jackson/Niemann/W. Davis
are better than Wang,Joba,CC,(Perez/Burnett/Lowe), and Petitte
Beckett, Dice-K, Lester, Wake, (FA starter/Bucholtz/Bowden) (if the FA starter is CC i'd prob give them the edge but not for Lowe, wolf ect.)
or a Cubs rotation with Peavy, Big-Z, Lilly, Dempster, Harden
I know those fans will argue the point but when I see the Rays rotation I see Aces, when I see the other ones i see Aces with question marks, age, injury ect. I just don't see the Rays breaking up their top guns. I'd expect 2 of Sonnastine, Jackson, and Niemann to be dealt with the other the 5th starter and Davis and Hellickson waiting in the wings.

JAI: While the Rays could be a part of the Peavy deal I don't that that proposal would work on 2 levels. Why would the Rays want a 19 year old for their WS starter. If they trade Bartlett they need value now not 4 years from now. Also I don't think that trade would be good enough from the Padres perspective. Cubs could just switch Theriot and Vitters and get the deal done on their own.
I could see Bartlett and a pitcher maybe Niemann on the move for Giles and someone from the Cubs maybe Fontenot or Pie. Not sure if this deal would work out seems like the Rays would be giving up a good bit. Also would Giles want to come play out east.

"The Rays will have the best rotation in baseball next year, and I say that no matter what the Yankees, Cubs, or Red Sox do."
How much would you like to wager that is not true?
I understand you're probably a Rays fan enamored with not blowing a$$ but don't get too cocky ok?

Hey good points Steveo26,
Just thought that a once in a lifetime hitter is a pretty valuable commodity if you can get one.
Some added offense would definetly help the Rays, especially if one can deal from their position of strength. Is trading Price trading alot ? Definetly. Is Hanley worth it ? Definetly.
But your point is a strong one. Hanley does not fit into their style of baseball, and it would prob weaken their team immensely to move away from that philosophy.

Kenan and Kel: I am far from a Rays fan, though i do have the utmost respect for the way they are run now. Rays have 4 viable options for their 5th rotation spot next year, including 2 guys who won more than 10 games last season. Sox, Yanks, and Cubs can't even begin to say that.
