« Mark Teixeira Rumors: Monday | Main | Vizquel Wants To Play Again »
6:36pm: The Pirates contacted Cabrera's agent this weekend, so they're one of the many teams considering him. Powers told Rob Biertempfel he has "two firm offers" in hand. Dan Connolly notes that the Blue Jays and Nationals have shown interest in the past.
3:32pm: The Baltimore Sun's Dan Connolly talked to Daniel Cabrera's agent Mike Powers, who says eleven teams have expressed interest in his client. One even offered a multiyear deal. Cabrera, 28 in May, was non-tendered by the Orioles on Friday.

You could say his situation might spin out of control.
ha
get it

STL anyone?
Posted by: MVPujols | December 15, 2008 at 03:36 PM
Bet he comes out with a pretty fat deal.
Posted by: juiced | December 15, 2008 at 03:37 PM
Rangers? I feel like when I lived down there he was brought up every trade deadline for them. Not sure how he would fit in though.
Posted by: dmerandom | December 15, 2008 at 03:38 PM
Agree w/juiced. The Rays upped the price for potential.
Posted by: dmerandom | December 15, 2008 at 03:39 PM
I wonder how dumb the O's are going to look for letting him go. He wasn't even going to be a Free Agent until after '10. And its not like the O's didn't need someone to throw some innings. And he is one of the 2 that averaged 6 innings per start on the staff.
Posted by: XD23 | December 15, 2008 at 03:41 PM
as frustrating and disappointing as daniel cabrera was as an oriole, i hope he succeeds for whoever he plays for.
Posted by: #1O'sfan | December 15, 2008 at 03:42 PM
Blue Jays...
Posted by: coryjwilson | December 15, 2008 at 03:43 PM
i kind of wish the orioles kept d-cab even with his control or lack there of. despite all the walks and hit batters, d-cab was an innings eater which is exactly what the birds need right now to hold them over till matusz, tillman, arrieta, and the others are big-league ready.
Posted by: lftyg33 | December 15, 2008 at 03:43 PM
Braves???
Posted by: bravesfan23 | December 15, 2008 at 03:43 PM
Pirates maybe?
He seems like a NH type of pitcher.
Posted by: UtesFan89 | December 15, 2008 at 03:44 PM
Dodgers!!!
Posted by: NedCollettiClueless | December 15, 2008 at 03:45 PM
"Blue Jays..."
i don't think so...he didnt pitch to well in the AL east.
im thinking Mets.
Posted by: Sal from Tampa | December 15, 2008 at 03:46 PM
I would hope the Bucs get in on this. Cabrera would fit in nicely in Pit...
Posted by: enchinga | December 15, 2008 at 03:47 PM
quick question"
is billy wagner retiring?
Posted by: Sal from Tampa | December 15, 2008 at 03:47 PM
OMFG I still can't stomach how dumb we Orioles are for giving up on D-Cab. Maybe if we had anyone else who could pitch, besides Guthrie, I could handle this move, but we don't.
Posted by: dorfmac | December 15, 2008 at 03:49 PM
If he ever could control his stuff he would make a nasty closer.
Posted by: 661dodgerblue | December 15, 2008 at 03:50 PM
Braves had multiple rumors surronding him over the past two years...I wouldn't be surprised...oh bummer...at the beginning of the offseason the last thing I thought I would be saying/reading is the Braves acquire inconsistent Daniel Cabrera to bolster their pitching staff...
Posted by: bartendermlb | December 15, 2008 at 03:54 PM
I hope the Jays get him, but I don't think they'll want to spend what he's gonna get.
Posted by: juiced | December 15, 2008 at 03:55 PM
Even as inconsistent hes been, his potential is on my mind.
Nationals!!
Posted by: cmdterps44 | December 15, 2008 at 03:57 PM
I couldn't see why any team outside the Yanks, Red Sox, and Angels wouldn't get in on this. If you have a hole in your five spot, why not stick him in there? Definitely going to get more cash than he deserves because of so many interested teams.
Posted by: Grizzlyfox | December 15, 2008 at 04:01 PM
He would be a decent fit for some NL teams. Nats, STL, Braves, Mil, Rockies come to mind.
Posted by: Y2K_Apocalypse | December 15, 2008 at 04:02 PM
Kenny Williams of the White Sox has inquired about him in years past, even as recent as last off season if I recall. I don't imagine them to offer much, but a big 6'7" guy who can touch the upper 90's fairly easily is valuable in the bullpen as well. He'll land somewhere, a change of scenery was needed though. Sox HAVE been known to fix pitchers
Posted by: weasel425 | December 15, 2008 at 04:03 PM
Watch him go to the Mets.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | December 15, 2008 at 04:03 PM
Probably a fit for the NL or AL..I could see the eleven teams being:
NL: StL, Pit, Cin, Was, SF, Col, Atl
AL: CHW, Cle, Sea, Tor
Posted by: wagunk27 | December 15, 2008 at 04:06 PM
The Mets only have 1 left handed arm in the bullpen. If they go after anyone it should be another lefty, and not a righty.
Posted by: ksuth | December 15, 2008 at 04:06 PM

Not to mention the Sox only have 3 SP at the moment.

Is there serious concern about hisdrop in velocity. This dude used to light it up.
Posted by: coryjwilson | December 15, 2008 at 04:12 PM
He'll sign for much less than the O's would've had to pay him through arbitration; he made $2.3 million last year. I disagree that any team should be happy with him in the 5th spot, guys like this will just kill you, 1.50+ WHIP & significantly reduced strikeouts last year. As a White Sox fan I say "Please Kenny, don't do it!"
Posted by: Candiru | December 15, 2008 at 04:15 PM
I was under the impression that the White Sox would go after a stable #3-4 starter type veteran to add behind the young guys.
Posted by: coryjwilson | December 15, 2008 at 04:20 PM
Eleven teams want a homerun derby pitcher.
Posted by: C.K. | December 15, 2008 at 04:20 PM
I don't see the White Sox signing anybody really, but they surely aren't going to shell out $14MM+ for Lowe. Besides Sheets and Lowe, who else really is there free agent wise worth adding to a teams rotation? Cabrera would seem like the high risk/high reward type who could be had for a few million...hence the reason supposedly 11 teams are after him.
Posted by: weasel425 | December 15, 2008 at 04:29 PM
Step away from the discard Kenny Williams.
Posted by: OmegaMan | December 15, 2008 at 04:32 PM
Brewers better get in on this...hell I'd take the homerun derby pitcher...it would keep me interested in the games!
Posted by: T_Unit14 | December 15, 2008 at 04:32 PM
I would think that TOR, CHW, KC, TEX, WASH, PITT and COL would be in the mix. Maybe SEA, ATL and STL would inquire as well.
I wouldn't put it past the Orioles to try and re-acquire him for less ca$h. They definitely need SP, and won't be contending next year.
Looking at his numbers over the last couple of years, it seems that his GB/FB ratio is pretty good, but his K/IP went down dramatically last year. MAYBE if he can learn to pitch-to-contact, he could lower his walks and be a decent #4 starter with a good fielding team in a pitcher's park. (That's alot of speculation though)
Posted by: Haymaker | December 15, 2008 at 04:36 PM
On a related note, Kenny Williams is also trying to sign that guy that threw his shoes at Bush.
Posted by: OmegaMan | December 15, 2008 at 04:42 PM
I'm not sure if any of you guys watched him play against national league teams, but he is scared out of his mind when it comes to batting, so I think AL teams might be a preference to him.
Posted by: Markakis for President | December 15, 2008 at 04:42 PM
I think the Astros should probably make a move on this.
The rotation right now is essentially Oswalt, Rodriguez, Moehler, Hampton and Backe, and that's pretty subpar. Moving Cabrera to the NL and Houston may be a good change of scenary for him, and the Astros could really use an innings eater that can strikeout some guys.
Obviously he could just bomb in Houston as well though, so I wouldn't be willing to go over something like 2/7, with a third year option at $6M and a $500K buyout. Obviously that could change considering I don't know what the market actually is.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 15, 2008 at 04:46 PM
I think Washington would be a good fit for him. He'd be a good for MANY teams: Mets, Dodgers, StL, White Sox, Astros, Texas, etc
Posted by: maximumpotential | December 15, 2008 at 04:51 PM
Jays fans better hope their team isn't interested in Cabrera... The yanks, Rays, and Red Sox own the kid, seriously take a look at his career numbers against AL East teams. That's about 10 starts right there where he's gonna get hammered.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | December 15, 2008 at 05:23 PM
I doubt the Dodgers are intersted in Cabrera...
Colletti prefers overpriced or washed up veterans to younger pitchers with upside.
Posted by: MikeClarke | December 15, 2008 at 05:49 PM
Ha, if this guy gets a multi-year deal, I don't know what I'll do... Career ERA and BB/9 over 5.00 and he isn't even that "young" anymore. I could understand if he were around 24 or so, but if you can't figure out how to control your stuff after 8 years in professional baseball, then you probably never will.
Despite his control, I know he has good stuff.. but he really hasn't been able to make use of it at any level. A change of scene might do him well, but how far do you really think it is going to go?!
Posted by: GoTribe | December 15, 2008 at 05:52 PM
As an O's fan, I think it was stupid for us to give up on Cabrera, given the relatively low cost of bringing him back combined with our very obvious lack of experienced pitching. Furthermore, there's no question about his upside. If someone can fix his mechanics, he has the stuff to absolutely dominate. Still, as concerned as I am that we'll wind up kicking ourselves for simply tossing him out with the garbage, I DO think it's a VERY long shot and kinda get where the O's were coming from. If there's EVER been a more frustrating pitcher, I'm not familiar with him. For all his talent, he's an absolute head-case who tantalizes and then rips your heart out and stomps on it. Seems to me the O's were as tired of waiting for Cabrera to 'figure it out' as the fans were. The velocity drop was just the last straw. Maybe he'll get back to throwing in the high-90s, but I think the dip just gave the O's an excuse to cut anchor and start fresh. After all, we've got DC 2.0 in Radhames Liz. We don't need two guys who can't hit the broad side of a barn when they're not 'on.' The irksome thing is the timing, but I guess the front office boys figured the team would be better off giving Cabrera's starts to one of the many intriguing-if-untested youngsters on the roster; the assumption being that maybe one of those guys actually realizes some of their potential. I'll be watching DC closely next year, but don't expect anything different: he'll lead the league in walks, wild pitches, and rank right up there in losses, ERA, and WHIP. If he were going to do something, he'd have done it by now...I hope.
Posted by: milehigh78 | December 15, 2008 at 06:00 PM
Oh, and just to offer a little perspective... If you think your team would be best served signing a guy the ORIOLES were willing to non-tender...you might have some issues with your rotation.
Posted by: milehigh78 | December 15, 2008 at 06:03 PM
"If you think your team would be best served signing a guy the ORIOLES were willing to non-tender...you might have some issues with your rotation."
Heh, gotta love self-depreciating fans.

You obviously have never seen Cabrera pitch he is horrible, he does not have the mental makeup to ever be a good starter, the Orioles are doing the right thing instead of wasting money on a no talent bum. Every year people say "oh but he has potential, look at Randy Johnson it took him a few years to figure it out", that argument grew weaker and weaker every season and those of you who still say that are kidding yourselves, like most smart Oriole fans I applaud their decision to get rid of him.
Posted by: BraveOriole | December 15, 2008 at 06:45 PM
"The Mets only have 1 left handed arm in the bullpen. If they go after anyone it should be another lefty, and not a righty"
The Mets shouldn't take a flier on a ridiculously talented huge upside starting pitcher in a low risk/ high reward situation because he throws with his right hand and the bullpen needs a lefty. Right. Perfect.
Posted by: nrmax88 | December 15, 2008 at 06:45 PM
How can a guy draw interest from 11 teams and not have ANY trade value? McFAIL.
Posted by: E.I.H. | December 15, 2008 at 06:48 PM
Omar is definitely going to be in on this. It worked with John Maine and Ollie. Why not try it again? This is like his favorite type of move to make.
Posted by: nrmax88 | December 15, 2008 at 06:48 PM
BraveOriole.... I would hold off on calling yourself a smart Oriole fan... especially in the same entry where you say Cabrera has no talent. Just saying.
Posted by: nrmax88 | December 15, 2008 at 07:03 PM
Daniel Cabrera is a big waste of time. If anyone had seen him pitch why would they be interested? He has the worst control in the majors and cant field his position. His only thing is his plus arm that saw a decrease in velocity over the last year.
Posted by: BaltimoreOrioles21 | December 15, 2008 at 07:05 PM
haha, i'd love to see him do the NL. the only thing he was worse at than throwing strikes was batting. try and find some tape, it's actually hilarious.
Posted by: Jared Sager | December 15, 2008 at 07:11 PM
"Cabrera would seem like the high risk/high reward type...."
And the high risk part would be.....?
Posted by: ballyb11 | December 15, 2008 at 07:20 PM
walking the other team to victory.
Posted by: Jared Sager | December 15, 2008 at 07:21 PM
nrmax88 doesn't sound like you have ever seen the guy pitch so go look at his stats so you can get a sense of how bad he is and go to the O's fan forum and see how many people agree with me. I don't see anyone crying about his departure. Cabrera is a headcase and after five years of trying to get Cabrera to improve and trust his stuff has resulted in no gains in fact he has gotten worse with a loss in velocity and less strikeouts while allowing mores hits per inning. I hope your team gets Cabrera so you can see just how "great" he is with all his potential.
Posted by: BraveOriole | December 15, 2008 at 07:22 PM
Lol, he has 14 ABs and 14 Ks as a hitter. Not that it matters though.
I would like to see what Duncan could do with him.
Posted by: zebra | December 15, 2008 at 07:27 PM
This would fit the Pirates so well. Control-deficient pitchers who used to be able to throw somewhat hard. Yippee.
Posted by: piratefan14 | December 15, 2008 at 08:13 PM
Moving to the NL might be a good thing for Cabrera. Just the simple fact of not having to face a DH will improve his numbers somewhat. I hope the Bucs sign him. He's exactly the kind of guy you roll the dice on to see what he can do in the NL...
Posted by: enchinga | December 15, 2008 at 08:36 PM
The other thing is Kerrigan has done a decent job with his pitching staffs in the past. I'd like to see what he could do with this kid.
Posted by: enchinga | December 15, 2008 at 08:38 PM
Daniel Cabrera CANNOT play in the NL. he would throw his back out after 10 at-bats. watching him swinging the bat was painful.
it only happened about 4 games per year and you still cringed everytime you saw him with a bat.
Posted by: lftyg33 | December 15, 2008 at 08:46 PM
he wont get traded to the yanks or jays bc thier in the division
Posted by: midnight5 | December 15, 2008 at 09:13 PM
"he wont get traded to the yanks or jays bc thier in the division"
It isn't a trade, he wasn't tendered a contract meaning he's a free agent.
Posted by: start_wearing_purple | December 16, 2008 at 01:20 AM
"he wont get traded to the yanks or jays bc thier in the division"
Good call, I'm willing to bet no team TRADES for him.
Posted by: Furrski | December 16, 2008 at 08:15 AM
Ha, you have to love the thought of a guy who can go out and throw a double-double (10 K's and 10 BB's).. He seriously almost did it once! I think it was in '04 or '05, he had 10 K's and 9 BB's in a game... insane.
A few people here have suggested using him as a reliever.. Personally, I think that any guy in the bullpen needs to be able to throw strikes. You can't have a guy coming out of the bullpen and putting a bunch of guys on base (trust me, I'm a Tribe fan, I know that for a fact)
Interesting bit here: out of D-Cabs 147 career games, he has 7 outings where he has not walked a single batter.. He is 6-1 in those games.
