« Ben Sheets Rumors: Tuesday | Main | Mark Teixeira Rumors: Tuesday »
9:57pm: The Mariners spoke with the Cardinals and Brewers today about Putz, though a Fielder for Putz deal never came up.
7:58pm: Doug Melvin didn't reference Putz specifically, but he did tell reporters he did not find a match with the Mariners in trade talks.
6:02pm: From ESPN's Steve Phillips:
The Mariners need a power hitter. The Brewers need a closer. There is speculation that the two teams are discussing a package involving Putz and Prince Fielder.
11:22am: Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press says talks between the Ms and Tigers for Putz are ongoing.
11:04am: Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times says the Indians "are not really contenders" for Mariners closer J.J. Putz, as they'd prefer to sign a free agent. He notes lukewarm interest from St. Louis and believes the Tigers and Brewers are more serious. Baker questions whether the Tigers have the young players to get it done.
As for the Brewers, Baker speaks of a possible large multiplayer deal that's "all just a concept for now."

I figured the jack z and melvin connection would happen. If they could find a way to include beltre this would be a desirable trade
Posted by: BerndtToast | December 09, 2008 at 11:11 AM
Would the Mariners be interested in trading Y. Bennacourt? Or whoever that shortstop is?
What about a package of him and Clemente....Mariners are doomed and should just package everyone.
Posted by: GmblngPtchr20 | December 09, 2008 at 11:14 AM
Pretty sure Jeff Clement is not going anywhere.
Posted by: CubbyFan23 | December 09, 2008 at 11:17 AM
who does detroit honestly even have to offer for putz outside of porcello?? if seattle was smart they'd try to involve cleveland even more...
Posted by: thenextgm08 | December 09, 2008 at 12:08 PM
Thames/Joyce, Larish, and a minor league pitcher for Putz?
I think highly of these guys, esp. Larish, but it might be enough.
Posted by: TigerFan54 | December 09, 2008 at 12:13 PM
Let's see Detroit has Thames, Joyce, Larish, Brent Clevlin, Clete Thomas, Casper Wells, Wilkin Ramirez, and Mike Hollimon. Not that I want the tigers to sell the farm for a closer, but maybe they can work something out.
Posted by: highVoltage | December 09, 2008 at 12:29 PM
Not to mention Iorg, Worth, Dusty Ryan... lesser guys liek St. Pierre, Skelton, Sizemore.
Pitchers Perry, Porcello are untouchable... but Tata is a pitcher that isn't fantastic, but available.
Posted by: TigerFan54 | December 09, 2008 at 12:38 PM
PhiLOLips! He does know that the Tigers don't have Prince Fielder, right???
Posted by: nostocksjustbonds | December 09, 2008 at 06:05 PM
Don't the Brewers also need a closer?
Posted by: Sam | December 09, 2008 at 06:08 PM
When did Steve Phillips become credible enough for anyone to quote him on this stuff?
Posted by: dusto | December 09, 2008 at 06:09 PM
The sad thing is that Steve Phillips actually wrote that, and that isn't a typo from Tim.
Can we PLEASE crown Steve Phillips as the worst baseball writer for any major publication?
Okay so how about this one then:
Putz, Beltre, and a prospect for Fielder and Bill Hall?
I hate Steve Phillips..
Posted by: scribbletone | December 09, 2008 at 06:11 PM
J.J. Putz for Prince Fielder.. There you go. Get the paperwork going!!
;)
Posted by: thr33niL | December 09, 2008 at 06:13 PM
HAHAHA STEVE PHILLIPS IS SUCH A MORON
Posted by: metzfan22 | December 09, 2008 at 06:13 PM
this doesnt make sense...the tigers need a closer, the M's need a hitter, so prince fielder is being discussed? Where the the Brewers come in
Posted by: bigchart333 | December 09, 2008 at 06:14 PM
scribbletone, as bad as Phillips is, he's not as bad as Heyman.
Posted by: charliescrabbles | December 09, 2008 at 06:14 PM
Steve Phillips is a better GM than analyst and thats saying something
Posted by: cjkalt | December 09, 2008 at 06:15 PM
I think Phillips meant to say JJ for Cecil Fielder.
Posted by: shhango | December 09, 2008 at 06:17 PM
If the Tigers can trade Prince Fielder for JJ Putz, it will be the most lopsided trade this century! Of course, the Brewers will be mighty pissed!
Posted by: nostocksjustbonds | December 09, 2008 at 06:17 PM
you guys are the morons.
phillips lives on "3 steps ahead of you drive".
he has the tigers trading miguel cabrera to the brewers for prince fielder and mike cameron. the tigers then will trade fielder, cameron, and a box of jim leyland's cigars to the mariners for putz and ichiro.
jokes on youuu, suckerssss
Posted by: ramonskee | December 09, 2008 at 06:18 PM
If you click on the link, he doesn't mention the Tigers.
Posted by: walt | December 09, 2008 at 06:19 PM
i like steve phillips and dave littlefield are proof for every armchair GM that even YOU could get paid millions to run a fantasy team even if you suck at it... but do it in real life.
Posted by: ramonskee | December 09, 2008 at 06:20 PM
i think*, not i like
Posted by: ramonskee | December 09, 2008 at 06:20 PM
Either Phillips meant to say Cecil Fielder, or that the Brewers were also in the mix, and would be willing to trade Prince Fielder for JJ and some starting pitching (long-shot, but Washburn anyone? possible of Seattle eats some of his contract)
Phillips needs to get his head in the game though. C'mon man.
Posted by: Mattingly4President | December 09, 2008 at 06:21 PM
I'd argue that Phillips is worse than Heyman.
Have you ever read one of those ESPN Insider chats with Phillips? It's brutal. How he gets a job doing that is simply astonishing.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 09, 2008 at 06:23 PM
why would anyone listen to steve phillips on a trade possibility he thought of, the only person that should listen to him is victor zambrano
Posted by: pvilly131 | December 09, 2008 at 06:25 PM
1.) Heyman >>>>> Phillips
2.) pvilly, Duquette made that trade, not Phillips. Phillips was a terrible GM, but he didn't make that trade.
Posted by: metzfan22 | December 09, 2008 at 06:28 PM

tim, you didnt copy and paste like your supposed to
Posted by: pvilly131 | December 09, 2008 at 06:28 PM
Actually he did.
Phillips just made the correction recently.
Posted by: Alan | December 09, 2008 at 06:30 PM
Brewers should just sign Fuentes or Hoffman and keep Fielder...
Posted by: KG2577 | December 09, 2008 at 06:39 PM
I heard that a package could include JJ Putz and Brandon Morrow for a left handed hitter, most likely being Fielder.
Posted by: brewers19101 | December 09, 2008 at 06:44 PM
morrow looks impressive, how long is he under team control? And he's a future starter, right?
Posted by: glover28 | December 09, 2008 at 06:53 PM
i think the only problem about this trade is that the brewers dont have a minor league 1st baseman ready for the pros. if this trade is made, the brewers will probably have to sign a free agent, most likely being eric hinske (a wisconsin native).
Posted by: brewers19101 | December 09, 2008 at 06:54 PM
What if they used....., I don't know......Brad Nelson or Matt Gamel?
Posted by: Scott | December 09, 2008 at 07:01 PM
or even corey hart, who came up in the minors and in college as a first basemen, its not hard to learn a position that only requires u to catch the ball, i play shortstop and center field and we were winnnin by like 15 and i played 1st trust me its not htat hard
Posted by: brewersfan09 | December 09, 2008 at 07:10 PM
i dont see corey hart playing 1st just because of his speed. i could see mat gamel moving up, but theyve already said that he'll probably stay in the minors. id love to see him come up though.
Posted by: brewers19101 | December 09, 2008 at 07:13 PM
he may also be too young, dont want to make the same mistake twice (rickie weeks) but he is big and its easier to find a outfielder now a days then a solid 1st basemen which corey could be
Posted by: brewersfan09 | December 09, 2008 at 07:16 PM
im pretty sure the brewers arent gonna move around their outfield. brauns staying put till 2015, cameron is staying unless a really good trade is offered, and corey hart is a fast outfielder with a strong arm. why waste his talent and put him at 1st. if anything put hall at first and sign a third baseman.
Posted by: brewers19101 | December 09, 2008 at 07:28 PM
how about this trade:
Brewers get: Putz and Beltre
Mariners get: Hall and Fielder, and possibly a minor league arm (Bray or Gardner)
JUST GET HALL OUT OF HERE!!!!
Posted by: brewers19101 | December 09, 2008 at 07:43 PM
well i like that expescialy the hall trade but i think we would need to get a starter in that deal
Posted by: brewersfan09 | December 09, 2008 at 07:45 PM
maybe a hall prince and minor leaguer idk a PTBNL for bedard and putz
Posted by: brewersfan09 | December 09, 2008 at 07:46 PM
and move jj to 3rd, do we still have durham?
Posted by: brewersfan09 | December 09, 2008 at 07:47 PM
true. how about trading Hall, Fielder, and two minor arms for Putz, Beltre, and Morrow. for now though, i think the brewers are gonna stick to free agency to find a starting pitcher. i dont see morrow being a #1 pitcher next year, which is what the brew crew are looking for to take pressure of yo-yo gallardo.
Posted by: brewers19101 | December 09, 2008 at 07:49 PM
we dont have durham, but i dont see them signing him to a deal, considering they signed randolph at bench coach to specifically work with weeks. so, unfortunately, weeks will probably be starting at 2nd. jj will stay at ss, unless they dont get a 3rd baseman, but i dont see them moving jj to third.
Posted by: brewers19101 | December 09, 2008 at 07:52 PM
trading for beltre would be a huge mistake, hes got a worse contrct than hall, hes making 13 million next year.
Something like Putz and Morrow would be great straight for feilder, but maybe the brewers ould even work bedard in there and give up 2 or 3 pretty good prospects like angel salome, cole gillespie, and taylor green, or something like that
Posted by: glover28 | December 09, 2008 at 08:18 PM
There is no way the Brewers make a trade that involves Beltre. His contract is huge and it would only add to the payroll. The reason for moving Hall is to get rid of his contract.
It will be hard to trade Fielder considering that we would need a Major league 1B to replace him. Also, he is our only left handed bat right now. I think a multi- team deal would be needed to move Fielder.
Posted by: craig | December 09, 2008 at 08:43 PM
Could possibly see something huge like this happening
Brewers receive Garrett Atkins and JJ Putz
Rockies receive Tim Dillard, Ryan Ludwick, and Adrian Beltre
Mariners receive Prince Fielder
Cardinals receive Brian Fuentes
maybe??????
Posted by: craig | December 09, 2008 at 08:51 PM
craig-
Brian Fuentes is a free agent..
And I seriously doubt that the Mariners would even consider moving Morrow. They need all the young pitching they can get for the future, and guys like him, Hernandez, Bedard, Aumont, Ramirez, etc. are really important to bringing them back to contention.
Posted by: scribbletone | December 09, 2008 at 09:57 PM
craig- Fuentes is a free agent. AKA the Cardinals don't have to trade for him, they can just sign him.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 09, 2008 at 10:01 PM
The problem with a Putz for Fielder deal is that the M's would have to add more in return. That "more" would probably come in the form of young players, who the M's need to keep for their future.
Posted by: melonis rex | December 09, 2008 at 10:02 PM
plus, the cards would rather trade Ank...
Posted by: MVPujols | December 09, 2008 at 10:03 PM
There is no way Bedard is traded right now because his value is about as low as it could possibly be.
Posted by: thr33niL | December 09, 2008 at 10:03 PM
Steve Phillips is such a tool. You can put anything he says and anything Phil Rogers says in the 'koo-koo for coco puffs' category.
They make stuff up and are never right. How those two boobs have jobs is beyond me.
Posted by: hemingways | December 09, 2008 at 10:03 PM
If the Mariners trade JJ, there is no way Morrow goes also as he is the obvious replacement for closer. If you paid any attention last year, when JJ was injured Brandon was the one that closed out the games.
And, we don't need another over hyped overweight, no defense first baseman. No way Fielder comes to Seattle. Look at Z's latest signings, 2 first basemen, why would he go after a 3rd.
