WEDNESDAY, 1:11pm: Nolan Ryan confirmed the Rangers' interest in Johnson.
TUESDAY, 8:37pm: Jack Magruder says the Astros and Angels met with Johnson's reps at the Meetings. He adds that the Rangers, Brewers, and Cubs touched base before the Meetings.
2:54pm: Four California teams are said to be eyeing Randy Johnson: the Dodgers, Angels, Giants, and A's. Mike DiGiovanna learned that the Dodgers and Angels are more on the fringes. We've also seen Johnson linked to the Cubs as a fallback for Jake Peavy.

could Johnson make Tim even better? One former perennial Cy Young winner drops tiny hints of advice to an already great pitcher and another perennial Cy Young winner...hmmm.

What does Fringes mean?

4 cy young winners!!!

Tim, since we lost our 'Woody', we now could use a 'Big Unit'.

@ NedCollettiClueless,
Fringes, in that context, means they are two of the less likely teams to nab him or for LAD and LAA, he may not be as high of a priority.

Why does Nolan Ryan keep talking about the players he wants? Doesn't that sort of put the Rangers as a severe disadvantage in negotiations?
Posted by: cmac1973 | December 10, 2008 at 01:18 PM
If the Rangers sign a 45yo with the little money they have I will throw up.
Oh, cmac, he is doing that just to make it look like they are trying. Then they'll say they were outbid or something.

freshbreaker- dont worry about gdribble or whatever his name is, obviously he has no opinion on sports just likes to correct grammar/spelling issues on random websites or something.

I vote with kinsler5, Just say No to RJ. Hope we sign Sheets though.

Even though Lincecum/Cain/Sanchez/Zito/half-a-Lowry has a severe dropoff after Cain, SF needs some damn HITTERS. I don't see why Sabean doesn't go after Tex. He'll take heat for the length of the contract, but not as much as he would have signing CC to a team that needs to spend dough on hitting instead of pitching, right?

This would be the A's rotation if they get Johnson
1. Justin Duchscherer
2. Randy Johnson
3. Dana Eveland
4. Brett Anderson
5. Trevor Cahill

Randy Johnson and Lou Piniella seem receptive to the idea of a reunion tour at Wrigley as the Big Unit and Sweet Lou enter the swan song phase of their careers....My question: "Would Randy Johnson be willing to pitch in a part bullpen/part starter "flex" role as a late-inning situational lefty killer and then move into the rotation should Rich Harden or another Cubs' starter become injured?"...From my history books, I recall a future Hall of Fame-bound pitcher (Grover Alexander) came out of the bullpen to slay the mighty Yankees' Murderers' Row lineup in the late innings to lead the Cardinals to the 1926 World Series....I think Johnson must have at least seven or more teams vying for his services so if it is strictly about the money, Johnson would probably attract larger money elsewhere. Sign with Chicago, Big Unit---Imagine Zambrano giving way in the 8th inning and Piniella motioning to the Big Unit in the bullpen to take on Utley and Ryan Howard to get the Cubbies out of a jam. I'd rather have Johnson than Neil Cotts or Sean Marshall in that situation.
