Braves Sign Kenshin Kawakami

2:47pm: Says Yahoo! Sports' Tim Brown, the contract is a three-year deal.

1:43pm: David O'Brien says, "Deal is done, pending physical." Kenshin Kawakami is an Atlanta Brave.

SATURDAY, 11:34am: In the comments section of his own post, David O'Brien of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution writes:

I really think the Braves have reached an agreement with Kawakami. And not because a Japanese paper reported it.

In the body of the article, he writes that an announcement by Kawakami's people "could come at any time."

7:45pm: MLB.com's Mark Bowman that the Braves may have already lured Kawakami. The report says "multiple Major League sources" are confirming tonight that a deal is near completion and that this rate, Kawakami could take a physical on Monday. The report also details that the Braves are readying their first offer for Derek Lowe, which they plan to make next week. More from Bowman here.

FRIDAY, 5:00pm: This link is gaining in popularity.  It says the Braves are close to a deal with Kenshin Kawakami, but there's still a chance he could sign elsewhere.  I do think the Braves may end up signing him but I still feel this report may be jumping the gun.

Just wait a few hours and there will be a report out that he's headed to one of minny, st. louis, or balitmore. in all seriousness kawakami is a good move only if the braves add lowe too because kawakami is a mid rotation guy not an ace.

Lowe isn't an ace either, although he is certainly better than Kawakami.

Very nice. This would be a solid signing for the Braves. He is a nice middle of the rotation guy who will give them a chance to win every night. If they sign Derek Lowe and Kenshin Kawakami, then it would probably make up for the production they missed out on by not getting AJ Burnett...

Projected Rotation:
Derek Lowe
jair Jurrjens
Javier Vazquez
Kenshin Kawakami
Campillo/Morton/Reyes/Hanson

I wanna take that link out on a date. Have some fish, some liquor, maybe make some bad decisions...see what happens.

Derek Lowe has equaled or outperformed Burnett the last 3 yrs. (TRA+ is a measure of pure performance, removing factors a pitcher doesn't control)

Burnett TRA+: 122, 115, 124
Lowe TRA+: 121, 118, 132

And Lowe has pitched 100 more innings than Burnett.

Lowe is not an unquestioned ace but he's borderline 1/2 pitcher. Certainly better than what the Braves have at the top right now. Not everybody can put a Johan Santana or CC Sabathia in their number one spot

Great move even if they don't get Lowe. We shall see.

Baleen,

With all of the agony of this offseason so far, you managed to make me laugh. Maybe Wren will come out of this with a little bit of dignity.

"Burnett TRA+: 122, 115, 124
Lowe TRA+: 121, 118, 132

And Lowe has pitched 100 more innings than Burnett.

Posted by: QuadBravesFan | January 09, 2009 at 04:23 PM"

TRA+? Seriously now. Stick to the hard stats please.

Oh I'm sorry astral.

God forbid, I use a useful stat. How about FIP?

Burnett: 3.79, 4.33, 3.45
Lowe: 3.68, 3.97, 3.26

How about a crappy stat, ERA.

Burnett: 3.98, 3.75, 4.07
Lowe: 3.63, 3.88, 3.24

Looks equal or better to me.

OklahomaBrave - glad to be of service. Lord knows we Braves fans need some laughter this offseason!

If the Braves sign Kawakami, will all the needless Wren bashing stop?

"Everything is going as I have forseen it"...-Emperor Palpatine. I thought that fit well here cuz Wren is now doing what I've been proclaiming for weeks.

Melonis Rex,
I've never bashed Wren in any of my posts. If fact I've always defended him in relation to Peavy, Burnett, and Furcal. His two moves last offseason were genius, and I believe he has the organization in the right direction. That being said it is crucial that he gets Lowe, Kawakami, and an outfield bat.

OklahomaBrave-

I didn't say you were bashing Wren. I wasn't calling you out specifically.

I was referring to the people who were on various Braves posts saying "Wren is a failure because he didn't do X" or "Wren should be fired" or "Wren is dooming the Braves to sucking" because they didn't do something stupid like sign an injury prone Burnett to a huge contract when Lowe will get less, or trade a young, cheap, good Yunel Escobar along with other prospects for Peavy.

"If the Braves sign Kawakami, will all the needless Wren bashing stop?"

I doubt it. It's been going on here since the Braves bungled up the peavy talks by not wanting to give anything away and letting the Cubs waltz in big time and then Towers changing his mind period with regards to trading peavy and now Smoltzie.. jeez.. Maybe Peavy he bungled, but not Jones and Smoltz.

The Braves are going to get nearly as good a starter in Kawakami more than likely as they would in Lowe and save what? 5-6 million a year at least and they don't have to deal with Boras to boot. Sounds like a good deal here, especially when Kawakami can be an ambassador for future Japanese players wanting to maybe come to Atlanta.

Melonis Rex,

I agree that the Wren bashing needs to stop. Just didn't want to be lumped into that group. Totally agree with Lowe>Burnett and Yunel and prospects>Peavy.

This article makes it seem like its Kawakami or Lowe but i've been getting the impression their trying to get both which in my opinion would be great.

i would suggest putting him in the 5th starter spot though so he can adjust easier and they can keep tabs on his innings since in his last season he pitched 118 innings or something like that in a 6 man rotation. so something like

1. Lowe
2. Vazquez
3. Jair
4. Campillo/Glavine
5. Kawakami

it would benefit them highly so that way they dont feel pressured to rush Hanson to the majors and he can spend the season or at least start it in AAA.

kenshin are going to furcal-ed your ass

Sign Derek Lowe at 4/65 and sign Kawakami 4/20 and sign Abreu 3/25

Does anyone think that the Braves will make a run at Matt Holliday next off-season and Peavy when he hits the open market?

"Does anyone think that the Braves will make a run at Matt Holliday next off-season and Peavy when he hits the open market?"

Peavy won't hit the open market for several more years. Too early to tell what happens then.

I could see a Matt Holliday run. If the Braves are concerned with defense, there you go. Holliday is a very, very good defensive LF, along with the full package of good speed AND power.

Rotation order really does not matter. It's quality of the pitchers in the rotation that matters.

marlinsman - that has to catch on!

Lowe totally furcalled the Mets and went to the Braves! chop chop muthaf$#@as!!!!

Braves will not make a run at Holliday because he would block their OF prospects. the only way that happens is if Frenchy sucks like Andruw did this year and they get rid of him.

I personally would rather give up a little bit of talent for Ludwick/Swisher/Nady all of which are younger than Abreu and less of an injury risk.

However if it came down to having to sign him i wouldnt cry because looking at his stats he hits leftys at around .280 for the last few seasons

By them saying "kawakami could go to another team" is just trying to scare the braves fans. He'll sign with the braves no doubt.

How bout this...
Sign kawakami 3 years 21 mil
sign lowe 4 years 56 mil
sign ohman 2 years 7 mil
Sign glavine to an incentive type deal
trade kelly and jojo for dye
lineup
1.Anderson/shafer
2.Yuenl
3.Chip
4.Dye
5.Mac
6.Kotchman
7.French
8.Prado
Rotation
1.Lowe
2.Vazquez
3.JJ
4.Kawakami
5.Glavine
Morton and hanson waiting in the wings
bullpen
Gonzo, soriano, moylan, ohman, Acosta, Boyer, Marek
Thoughts...

i think it would take more than Kelly and Jojo for Dye.

Plus i would rather trade prospects for Swisher just because i personally like Johnson and think he is very under rated

baleen,
spread it, urban-dictionary it

"spread it, urban-dictionary it

furcaled..... i like it. I also like fookied and raphed.

drumza i agree with u that kelly is a real talent but u have to give talent to get talent. Imo dye is a huge improvment over swisher. Maybe a kelly jojo and b. jones considering jones will never really have a spot on the braves roster with all the other young guns coming up. If the sox wouldnt do that then ya move on to nady or swisher. I just feel the braves really need a ligetimet clean up hitter and i dont think dye or swisher exactly fit the bill like dye does...

Someone just said that they heard he signed with the Braves and he said he didn't believe it untill he seen this.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kenshin_Kawakami

Thoughts?

Okay Chipperowns10 if we're looking at building a team here, I vote, trade Kelly and Boyer to the Orioles for Roberts (they can't afford to keep him, we get a lead off hitter, they get a 2B that will be around when they're good, only costs us about 6 to 7Mil actual dollars), Sign Lowe 3yr 42 with easy vesting 1 yr 15 Mil 3 Mil buyout) Sign Kawakami 3 yr 24 mil, trade Infante, Bennett, Reyes to the Yanks for Nady, adding 6M.

Lineup
2B Roberts
SS Escobar
3B Jones
LF Nady
C McCann
RF Francouer
1B Kotchman
CF Andruw/Anderson

Rotation
Lowe
Vasquez
Jurrjens
Kawakami
Campillo/Hanson

that'd be right at an additional 34-35Mil

Cobrasnake,

Wikipedia doesn't have to be backed by facts, you can add stuff to it. It gets checked but stuff get through the cracks there quite often.

Hope its true though, so long as they still go after Lowe or Perez.

Btw he said that his friend said he heard it on the Bill Shanks show.

And wikipedia says he plays for the Atlanta Braves and they have a pitcher of him with a Braves uniform on.

Not sure what to think of this but I'm thinking he's a Brave now...

Also I know the he said that his friend said isn't exactly what anyone wants to hear...lol

All I know is that's what the guy posted on the Braves msg board and maybe that was just some crap that someone added to the wikipedia site, I don't know.

Also to bravo84, I really think Perez is a long shot for the Braves because they don't seem to have much interest in him.

Maybe that changes or maybe it already has changed and they've just kept it quiet I don't know.

If Wren gave Kawakami 3 years and 24 million dollars, than he should be fired tomorrow. When Koji Uehara gets 2 years and 10 million guaranteed, there is NO REASON to sign a lesser japanese pitcher, who will be 33 next year, to a bigger deal.

Looks like it's been changed back, no longer says he plays for the Atlanta Braves or shows that pic.

NEBraves, you need to check your stats, Kawakami is a the prize not Uehara, and Uehara's deal could be worth as much 8 per year with incentives. So 6-9 per for Kawakami guaranteed money is in the ballpark. I'm hoping for 3/21, and I believe thats a steal, when Kuroda got 3/35 just last year, albeit a horrible class for starters and better economic times.

If the Brave miss out on Lowe, then next on the list is Perez, so I figure if there not interested now the will be tommorrow, just like with Lowe.

bravo84- go read Keith Law's assessment of Kawakami in his top 50 free agents list. Makes you think twice about him. Uehara is the better property. Why are you looking at NPB stats? I'd go for the scouting reports on this one. No reason to give that much money to this guy. Unproven talent. Back end starter, at best maybe a mid rotation guy. I stress maybe.

Keith Law's assessment:

Kawakami reminds me too much of Kei Igawa to ignore it, but he's here on the basis of a pretty strong track record of missing bats in Japan. He sits in the upper 80s with a very straight fastball; he's been more homer-prone in Japan than Igawa was, and that pitch's lack of movement is the major reason why.

He throws a potentially above-average cutter and can generate some ground balls with it, but it's not a clear out pitch. None of his offerings (he also throws a slow curve and a forkball with good-not-great diving action) is good enough to project that he'll strike out hitters here as he did in Nippon Professional Baseball. He throws a ton of strikes and was mostly durable through his career in Japan, although he missed some time in September with back trouble. He's a back-end starter for a National League club.

i dont think anyone is seriously hoping this guy puts up Derek Lowe like numbers. thats why i keep stressing that he will be the 5th starter.

the braves arent going after him looking at him as a difference maker they are looking at him as he is one of the top pitchers in the country and us signing him gives us more opportuninty when there are even better ones available

its all international relations.

if he posts numbers like in Japan then we have a great 5th starter if not we have a normal 5th starter

Law forgets his other pitch though the shutto, essentially a 2 seam fastball that is killer on righties. This by other reports ive read is his dominant pitch

cobrasnake, a friend is not a good source, nnor the radio, example a: manny with the marlins

I really hope that the Braves sign Kawakami and Lowe. It would turn out to be a pretty nice season where Wren addressed the starting rotation pretty well.

NEBraves,

I look at NPB stats for the same reason I look at Minor League stats, to amuse myself..

I hope your right and we get him for a contract similar to Uehara's.

Hopefully Turner fields friendly confines will help keep those HR balls down.

I'm getting more and more scared about this season though, Sariano, Ganzalez, and Moylan are all injury risks. Chipper's health is always in question, now it looks as if we signed a Japanese guy who is of course a question mark inthe MLB, we have no RH hitting or Power to speak of (Chipper's 22 and McCann's 23HR are the best we can boast), Kotchman is an unknown, will KJ play like the first part of last year or the end, Can Frenchy rebound, who's gonna play center, who's our ace. Thats a ton of question.

I know that marlinsman1120 but it was also reported in that link that I posted.

I didn't realize that people could edit that site like some on here have said because I never really use that site.

I also said I know that wasn't what anyone wanted to hear but since he said it was reported on the radio and he had that link I thought it was possible.

I usually don't post crap from msg boards but like I said there was atleast a link that was reporting that he had signed with the Braves.

He's right about the Wiki article, and photo.

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/7/75/Kenshin.JPG

Seems strange.

Oh wait thats photoshopped nevermind...

We'll forgive you Cobrasnake.

haha bravo,
i hope kenshin dont sign with the braves so i keep saying furcaled

Yeah I got furcaled today at work, I thought I was gonna make some money but the client took it away.

Might oughta call Webster's with that one..

Great signing for the Braves. I've been interested in Kawakami ever since I heard Wren talk about him in Vegas. I admire Wren for how he's handled a tough offseason, one that looks likes it's taking a turn for the better. Smoltz will be missed in ATL. He will always be my favorite pitcher of all time. Wren knew if he were to gamble on a pitcher it would be one he knew would pitch next year and for Smoltz that remains to be seen. I wish Smoltz the best of luck in Boston. I know Braves fans don't like it, but baseball is a business, not a family. I expect the Braves to make their offer to Lowe around the time Kawakami is having his physical. I think Kawakami's finess way of pitching will remind people of the greatest finess pitcher of all time...Maddux. I don't know how the Lowe situation will go because of the 4th year deal. Will the Braves guarantee it? That remains to be seen. I bet the salary will be around 15 mil per season to start out. I've heard the Met's GM pefers Oliver Perez anyway. So, if the Lowe deal goes well then all the Braves have to worry about is LF. I still would perfer Swisher over Nady in a trade, but even though it's just for a year I would love Nady on the team. There has been talks of Dunn and his power would definately help us out. All in all I have to say to Wren that I never doubted him and luv the job he's done thus far.

Good post BravoMan - I agree 100%

You think he may end up signing with ATL? That statement makes no sense...I think I may win a million dollars tomorrow

I'll reserve judgment until I see the financial terms for this signing. KLaw's scouting report doesn't sound great, but, at the very least, this adds depth to a ATL staff that probably isn't done adding arms just yet. The question is - how much did it cost?

If you were one of 3 or 4 people in the mix to win that million dollars, that would be a very valid statement metzfan22.

Chris W - KLaw's scouting report was less that complimentary, but that's kinda like going to an old school scout for an advanced statistical analysis of a player. Not saying he doesn't know what he's talking about, he sure knows WAY more about baseball than I do.

Kawakami's baseball cube page: http://thebaseballcube.com/players/K/Kenshin-Kawakami.shtml

His K/9, BB/9 and WHIP are all borderline stellar.

I agree: we'll judge when we see the $$$

Can we all collectively stop ripping Frank Wren? He gave up very little aside from Flowers for Vazquez, who has top-of-the-rotation potential in the NL at a very reasonable price. Aside from that, he's:

- Passed on Peavy, deciding that the future of the organization was more important than an overrated pitcher susceptible to elbow injury

- Been outbid on Burnett, who ended up going to NYY with an awful contract. The Yanks have had a great offseason, grabbing the top pitcher and position player on the market - but Burnett was given too many years and too many dollars. The results have never really matched his stuff over an extended period of time. If he flops in NY, it won't be a big deal, but his type of contract could be crippling to a smaller-budget organization like ATL.

- Let Smoltz walk after another team offered him 5MM guaranteed. This was a nice move for BOS, but promising 5 mil for a player that - let's be honest - may not even pitch in 2009 is a big deal for a team like ATL.

FYI - I am a Mets fan and DESPISE the Braves orginazation (nothing personal). But I'm also a baseball fan and respect the way the team is run.

Baleen - I'm all for statistical data as a compliment to qualitative scouting analysis, but I'm not sure that numbers accumulated in the Japanese league translate well to The Show. I'm not saying they're worthless - but they should probably be taken with a grain of salt. Not to be a total downer, but Kei Igawa - to who Law compares Kawakami - had some nice number in Japan as well before coming to the U.S.

Oh yeah, definitely, Chris. Couldn't agree more.

^About the Japanese league carry over being very elastic, not the despising of the the Braves part ;)

You think he may end up signing with ATL? That statement makes no sense...I think I may win a million dollars tomorrow

And choke in 2009 just like Cole Hamels said ur nothin but choke artists

And choke in 2009 just like Cole Hamels said ur nothin but choke artists

nothin personal,Chris W. You have respect for the Braves, so i'll have SOME respect for the Mets

lmao.. i just got furcaled. thats classic

I think you guys are expecting to much out of Kawakami. Im pretty sure they bring him over and slot him 5th. 1st off they get watch his innings since hes been pitching around 100 innings on a 6 man rotation.

plus there is no guarantee that he will come over as good as kuroda if he does great we have an above level 5th starter if he doesnt then we have a normal level 5th starter and paying him 8 mil wont hurt us.

as i said before the breaves are looking at this like an investment. whether this guy pans out or not it doesnt matter because they now will have a good name in japan and when the other pitchers that are just as good look to come to the states the braves will be seen as the ones that the great kawakami went to over there because tho the japanese he is a great pitcher and prob considered one of their best of all time.

all im saying is regardless of how well he does our international relations with the japanese just skyrocketed

we already are good in latin america now we move to the japanese to

Why is everyone all upset about Hamels' "choke artists" comment? It's pretty accurate, coming from a fan who personally watched the slow demise of the 2007 and 2008 seasons.

Us Braves fans have learned to not believe anything to be true until there is an official press release from the Atlanta front office.

Be great if DOB is right. If we can get Lowe we won't have an ace, but we will be competitive nightly

1. Lowe
2. Vazquez
3. Jurrjens
4. Campillo/Glavine/Kawakami
5. Kawakami/Glavine/Campillo

Not the Yankees rotation but still solid.

"Why is everyone all upset about Hamels' "choke artists" comment? It's pretty accurate, coming from a fan who personally watched the slow demise of the 2007 and 2008 seasons."

Also, if you listen to the interview, the radio hosts really goaded him into saying it.

all the six man rotation and kawakami can't provide innings comments, i think you guys misread. He was only a part of a 6 man rotation last year. 3 years ago he threw 212 innings, 2 years ago 167 2/3. while he wont be a workhorse 150-175 innings with good numbers would be a great contribution from your 4th or 5th starter

David O'brien just updated his blog and it now says ....

"Kawakami update: This time, the reports out of Japan are accurate. I’ve heard from someone who would know that the Braves have reached an agreement with the the 33-year-old former winner of the Japanese equivelent of the Cy Young Award, and it looks like a deal could be announced in the next few days provided he passes a physical Monday."

I wonder why we would take a shot on someone that almost no one knows anything about except statistics instead of signing someone like Randy Wolf?

Projected Rotation
1. Derek Lowe
2. Kenshin Kawakami
3. Javier Vasquez
4. Juir Jurrjens
5. Jorge Campillo/Tommy Hanson

Projected Lineup
1. Yunel Escobar SS
2. Kelly Johnson 2B

5. Brain McCann C
6. Casey Kotchman 1B
7. Jeff francoeur RF
8. Josh Anderson CF
9. Derek Lowe P

Jose,

Gotta figure with your lineup Josh Anderson would lead off over Escobar and Kawakami is probably our 4-5 starter. Vasquez is better than everyone thinks and being happier with his manager (Cox) he should play better, plus Jurrjens is really good and should be even better this year. I mean this guy went toe to toe with Cole Hamels and matched him pitch for pitch.

BTW my line-up as of now

1. Josh Anderson-CF
2. Yunel Escobar-SS
3. Chipper Jones-3B
4. Brian Mccann-C
5. Jeff Francoeur-RF (I think he surprises this year)
6. Kelly Johnson-2B
7. Casey Kotchman-1B
8. Matt Diaz/Gregor Blanco-LF

Projected Rotation

1. Derek Lowe
2. Javier Vazquez
3. Jair Jurrjens
4. Kenshin Kawakami
5. Jorge Campillo/Tommy Hanson/Tom Glavine?

Do you have a link to that tsweet9000?

First of all, Jair should be the number two starter then Vazquez, then Kawakami

And, the Cards won't give up Ludwick, only Ankiel, which from one source, would require Mike Gonzalez to the Cards. So either sign Dunn/Abreu or wait until Matt Holliday hits free-agency next year. Might wanna platoon Diaz/Blanco in left and if we can snag him, then use Blanco and/or Diaz and/or Anderson as trade bait. Wish we could acquire Nady but only if Francoeur has another year like last year. If we do get Nady we should sign him to a 2 year deal..only until Jason Heyward is ready to make an impact......What would you rank the top three prospects in the Braves Organization

1. Tommy Hanson
2. Jason Heyward
3. Freddie Freeman/Jordan Schafer

Prospects ranking
1. Hanson/Heyward
2. Hanson/Heyward
3. Schaefer/ Hernandez

I think Gonzo for Ludwick would be stupid, and I think Jurrjens is better than Vasquez, but I think Bobby would rather put a veteran innings eater ahead but they will get the same amount of starts so it probably doesnt matter.

Here ya go justAbravesfan719: http://tinyurl.com/9ava7d

According to Wikipedia, the Braves just signed Kawakami.

Here is the quote from Wikipedia:

“He has also just signed with MLB team Atlanta Braves to a two year fifteen million dollar contract. They will announce it tommorow.”

Don't know if it is true or not, remember its' wikipedia.

Bravesfan10

Bet they bat Kelly 5th against righties and Jeff 5th against Lefties. agree?

Yesterday Wikipedia said he was a Brave with a pic of him in a Braves Uniform and they took it off.

Prospects ranking
1. Hanson/Heyward
2. Hanson/Heyward
3. Schaefer/ Hernandez

Forgot about Gorkys

Assuming the Braves sign Lowe and Kawakami I think the rotation would look like...
1.Lowe
2.Vazquez
3.Jurrjens
4.Kawakami
5.Campillo/Glavine/Hanson
I'm not going to write out the line-up because I believe the Braves will find an LF bat. I'd say the top 2 possibiltys are trade for Nady or sign Dunn/Abreu. The bench will be pretty solid with...
PH-Nortan
UT-Infante
UT-Prado
OF-Blanco/Diaz
BC-Ross
I usually don't start writing all this out til I'm on my way to Spring Training in Florida.

Bravesfan10
Bet they bat Kelly 5th against righties and Jeff 5th against Lefties. agree?

I do. Because Bobby is gonna shake it up some and don't be surprised if Infante plays for Francoeur against lefties a few games. What is your projected lineups?

I strongly doubt we'd get a hot stove rumor from wikipedia before espn or DOB of the AJC and it'd be accurate.

Bravesfan10

I think me and you were pretty close.

we had 1-6 in common, I think Kotchman might go 7th because usually people put a little speedier guy at 8 and Diaz is pretty quick and Blanco is realll fast so thats why I think Kotchman might bat 7th.

I forgot about our "2nd best hitter on the team" Prado...lol

The big question is When will Tommy "Jake Peavy who??" Hanson arrive to the show? Depending on how we are in late June, i thin we could see Hanson before the All-Star game at beautiful Busch Stadium..

If injuries strike you could see Hanson soon, but if the rotation is healthy and the starters are all doing really well who are you going to plug him in for? This is assuming Lowe and Kawakami sign. I bet for sure you see Hanson this year if things start going down hill though. Haha Prado great gap hitter, but we already have enough of those. (Kotchman, Kelly, Diaz)

ScottBravesfan19,
The number 8 batter doesn't have to be real fast, but he should have good OPS so they can get on and get the pitcher outta the way so the leadoff man is first in the next inning. So yea Diaz would be good for that or Blanco because of how much he walks...

Just thought of this Hanson could pull a Jurrjens. What I mean is last year Jurrjens was supposed to be in AAA and he just smoked everyone else out of S.T. so possibly Hanson does that maybe?

"And, the Cards won't give up Ludwick, only Ankiel, which from one source, would require Mike Gonzalez to the Cards. So either sign Dunn/Abreu or wait until Matt Holliday hits free-agency next year"

Ankiel for Mike Gonzalez is a STEAL for the Braves. Good corner OF >>>> good closer.

Absolute steal. Ankiel plays good defense in a corner OF spot (but not good in CF).

I still think getting into the bidding for Matt Holliday and using Frenchy as trade bait (if he rebounds) or getting rid of him (if he sucks) is a good idea. That opens up the spot for Heyward nicely. Depends on how Matty performs in Oaktown and how expensive he will be though.

ScottBravesfan19,
The number 8 batter doesn't have to be real fast, but he should have good OPS so they can get on and get the pitcher outta the way so the leadoff man is first in the next inning. So yea Diaz would be good for that or Blanco because of how much he walks...

Yeah I gotcha I think what I was meaning was if you have a choice you would rather have a Gregor Blanco type guy at 8, remember Scott Thorman in the 8 hole? LOL
You can put anyone in the 8 hole, but a speedy guy is probably best utilized so he can be bunted over easier and score if the lead off guy gets a hit. Thats why I like speed in the 8 hole.

"If injuries strike you could see Hanson soon, but if the rotation is healthy and the starters are all doing really well who are you going to plug him in for?"

No, there is no reason to bring up Hanson until he is truly ready for the Show. Even if there are injuries to the rotation, then you use Morton/Reyes/etc. You don't rush up your best pitching prospect who has frontline upside just because someone got hurt. That's what the A's did with Gio Gonzalez last season, and it did NOT work out well. And I can think of other examples as well, I just posted the first one that came to my mind.

The success and PROPER development of Hanson is MUCH more important than Band-Aiding the rotation.

Rotation :
Lowe
Vasquez
Jurjains
Glavine/Campillo/Hanson
Kawakami
Lineup:
Anderson
Escoar
Jones
Dunn
McCan
Johnson
Kotchman
Francouer
Pitcher

NO TRADE HANSON, he scare the living sh*t out of me, trade him to the west coast!
