« Lowe Unimpressed By Mets' Offer | Main | Giants Aggressively Pursuing Manny? »
An industry source told Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that right-handed reliever Scott Proctor has agreed to a one-year deal with the Marlins.
Proctor was 2-0 with a 6.05 ERA in 41 appearances for the Dodgers last season. He fanned 46 batters in 38 2/3 innings. The deal is worth $750,000 in base salary and carries another $250,000 in performance incentives. Proctor is expected to fill the void left by the departure of Joe Nelson via free agency.

I think this signing puts the Marlins over the top!
Posted by: Theo Epstein | January 01, 2009 at 06:17 PM
I really like this signing by the Marlins. Proctor was a solid reliever with the Yankees and he throws very hard. He is younger than Joe Nelson and fills a much needed void for them. If his arm wasn't abused so much at the beginning of his career he would have been a much better reliever, but this is most definitely a low risk high reward signing that i favor.
Posted by: Rolling{Night}Hawk{09} | January 01, 2009 at 06:20 PM
Scott Proctor was very reliable as a reliever for the Yankees. He was always available, and pitched average at worse for us. I know he kind of blew up in Los Angeles, but he has shwon the abality to be an average-above average reliever. Good signing by the Marlins in my opinion
Posted by: defense | January 01, 2009 at 06:23 PM
@Theo: haha, nice.
Obvious comment here: I'm hoping his elbow has rehabbed well. His WHIP has been all over the place, though. This could be a steal for the Fish, but I won't hold my breath given they might pay him only $300k less than Nelson.
Posted by: breakz | January 01, 2009 at 06:24 PM
Delcarmen and Masterson would look good in their bullpen. Do they have any shortstops available?
Posted by: Theo Epstein | January 01, 2009 at 06:30 PM
Sure, but I'm sure they'll listen only if young top starting pitchers or outfielders are involved.
Posted by: breakz | January 01, 2009 at 06:32 PM
Finally escapes the reign of Joe Torre.
Posted by: letsgoyankees | January 01, 2009 at 06:34 PM
nice pickup, theyre great at picking up burnout and turning them into joe nelson
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 06:40 PM
theo, we have great minor league SS, you can have them, because hanley is going to be a marlins for the next couple of years.
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 06:42 PM
Proctor is a good pitcher..now that he will no longer be over used by Torre, he should only get better. Good signing.
Posted by: yankeegirl49 | January 01, 2009 at 06:43 PM
Thank God! I was afraid my Dodgers would re-sign him.
Posted by: dgrfns | January 01, 2009 at 06:45 PM
It seems like they could have pulled a reliever out of the minors for about half the price and still get an ERA of 6.00+
Posted by: sabernar | January 01, 2009 at 06:47 PM
The guy throws one of the very sweetest letter high fastballs in the league. You know, someone might pass this along to the Marlins brass: the phrase chicks dig the longball doesn't apply when you're the one giving them up.
Posted by: paxterj | January 01, 2009 at 06:48 PM
41 games and 38 innings was overused?
Posted by: paxterj | January 01, 2009 at 06:49 PM
Low-risk, high-reward move. I like it.
Posted by: m26555 | January 01, 2009 at 06:50 PM
Plus, the Marlins have had a habit of making good of unknown or previously below average relievers (Joe Borowski, Lee Gardner, Joe Nelson, etc.).
Posted by: m26555 | January 01, 2009 at 06:52 PM
Am I sensing anti-Torre sentiment from the NY faithful? After all he did for you? Jeez
Posted by: paxterj | January 01, 2009 at 06:54 PM
nice signing, now we have:
lindstrom- mid 3era with HEAT
nunez- below 3era for setup
proctor- reliable 7th or 6th inning
hopefully meyer, tankersley, pinto can turn it around
and tucker, ceda, and badenhop can contribute
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 07:00 PM
marlinsman -
Pinto will be fine. I really think his downfall was due to overuse last year. He was one of the best relievers in baseball for a good portion of the season, but Fredi Gonzalez basically used him until his arm was hanging by a thread.
Posted by: m26555 | January 01, 2009 at 07:02 PM
I was wondering...
Whos a good LOOGY that the marlins could sign before the new season?
Not that i dont like the guys we have already (pinto, tank, meyer -_-) but are we going to sign like the new arthur rhodes or something?
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 07:04 PM
mdg,
the marlins are too cheap to go out and get a loogy, they fill that job from within, pinto, tank, and meyer will be given the chance and that yankees that they draft from the rule 5 draft will get a shot
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 07:10 PM
you mean kroks?
ehh, he seems kinda good.
So, is there any other free agent signings the marlins are planning on?
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 07:13 PM
MarlinsMan,
Where are the holes are the Marlins? The Rays struggled for many years but had developing players at many positions. They were able to fill holes with cheaper free agents because of homegrown superstars. This led to their success.
The Marlins aren't going to win a World Series in the remaining time of Hanley's contract and we sure know the Marlins will not be paying the back end of the contract.
Would they be better off trading Uggla and Ramirez and building for a run 4-5 years down the line?
Posted by: Theo Epstein | January 01, 2009 at 07:16 PM
when will gardner be back, he had TJ and he was great when he pitched, he improve the bullpen
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 07:17 PM
Theo Epstein,
so what your trying to say is that trading hanley back to the RS for Bucholz and Ellsbury is a good idea?
Marlinsman1120,
I believe he will be back by mid-season (if lucky) or by next season when he is completely rejuvenated.
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 07:21 PM
no way hanley will be trade
he only making 5mil this year
marlins need a stadium deal, and trade him will ruin that chance
and they can make a run for it these year.
they have a great rotation, good lineup, and an improving bullpen
red sox had hanley, and they wouldnt start him and keep sign bums like cabrera, and renteria to block him
theo screw up, by trading away the best ss of these decade
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 07:24 PM
You know, when the marlins acquired HanRam from the redsoxs, we also had the choice of picking Jon Lester or Anibal Sanchez...
Cant believe we messed up.
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 07:28 PM
mdg, i agree lester would have been a choice but sanchez still he turn it around, he pitched injure and not fully healthy.
also they lokking at pudge( highly unlikely), and an veteran catcher like blanco, or trade for coste
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 07:30 PM
also mdg,
the marlins were offered lester or sanchez and delgado
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 07:33 PM
So, Anibal can be completely dominate when he's healthy?
To much cash money for a backup role, blanco and coste are both depressing batters.
the .292/.325/.392 for blanco was luck in his career. Is Brett Hayes even good?
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 07:36 PM
so we chose sanchez and delgado.
I hope we didnt choose lester due to his battle with cancer.
If thats true...
I will cut beinfest...lol
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 07:38 PM
marlinsman, that is a real stupid comment.
First, Theo wasn't working for the RS at the time of the trade, and rumors are he didn't like the trade for that exact reason.
But there is 0 chance the RS would have won in 2007 without Beckett or WS MVP Lowell, so it didn't exactly backfire.
Hanley was having a decent year in AA, nothing more.
Plus everyone is forgetting he isn't a SS, he plays it, but isn't a good fielder or anything.
I was also under the impression the RS said no to Lester or Papelbon in the trade, which is who the Marlins wanted, Sanchez was who was left.
The RS wouldn't start Hanley - he was in AA, Youkilis, Pedroia, Lowrie, Ellsbury, Papelbon, Lester - he would have got his chance when the time was right.
Posted by: quintjs | January 01, 2009 at 07:38 PM
Theo Epstein -
How do you know the Marlins won't win a World Series over the remainder of Hanley's contract? They have great young pitching and a solid young lineup. I'm telling you; this team is going places this year.
Posted by: m26555 | January 01, 2009 at 07:42 PM
sorry i dont know much the RS, since the RS sign edgar instead of giving hanley an chance.
also i agree that lester cancer's scare me
and hayes is suppose to be good defensive, but cant hit
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 07:42 PM
He isnt a SS and yet hes #1 in the offseason player rankings in the whole MLB.
Nice words quintjs.
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 07:48 PM
he was consider the RS top offensive prospect, when traded.
lowell and beckett got RS a ring, they be thankeful and stop trying to pry hanley back
and thanks SI.com now every marlins rumors, when turn into a hanley trade rumor. if was bad enough before
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 07:50 PM
I agree with MarlinsMan:
Even if Hanley was not jose reyes, jimmy rollins, or derek jeter in their prime at the time, he was still a solid player. They should have given hanley a shot because every single star eventually comes from the farm system (something the RS and the yankees dont believe in).
Also, the marlins will win a WS before the new stadium. They have a solid and dangerous lineup that is set to be projected like this:
CF Cameron Maybin
C John Baker
SS Hanley Ramirez
3B Jorge Cantu
2B Dan Uggla
LF Jeremy Hermida
RF Cody Ross
1B Gaby Sanchez
SP _____________
Rotation
Josh Johnson
Ricky Nolasco
Chris Volstad
Anibal Sanchez
Andrew Miller
You are a dimwit to think that they will not be a threat next season.
Do you really think Lester could have died on duty if the marlins chose him? Your kidding me right? Is there like some sort of insurance or something?
Ehh, i think i can work with hayes, hes way better than Rabelo anyway.
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 07:57 PM
hayes had a great year offensive this year hitting .293 but is a lifetime .252 hitter and had 2 errors and a .991 Fielding percentage
and throw out 10 runners in 32 chances so that average
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 07:57 PM
I'm loving the Marlins banter. Good to see the Fish well represented. They'll most definitely make noise in the NL East next year.
Posted by: Drew Silva | January 01, 2009 at 08:01 PM
I say brett will be..
AVG:.275
HR:6
RBI:54
Hes a backup role so thats pretty much predictable.
How many wins do you think each starting pitcher will garner next year?
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 08:01 PM
imagine this lineup
cf maybin
lf morrison
ss ramierez
1st sanchez
3rd dominguez
2nd coghlan
C baker
rf raynor
they have potential
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 08:02 PM
I agree Drew:
1997,2003,2009
You do the math.
And marlinsman,
I see that lineup with potential and a probable 2 years of MLB to be a WS team.
I still worry for the rotation of the future.
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 08:05 PM
seriously, each should at least get 10 wins, expect sanchez
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 08:08 PM
I believe this:
Josh Johnson: 20-5 ERA: 3.35
Ricky Nolasco: 18-8 ERA: 3.56
Chris Volstad: 16-10 ERA: 3.22
Anibal Sanchez:10-12 ERA: 3.92
Andrew Miller: 15-8 ERA: 3.66
I also sense both miller and nolasco reaching the 200 SO mark next season (If healthy).
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 08:13 PM
Wow, cheaper than Turnblow ?
Posted by: kinsler5 | January 01, 2009 at 08:14 PM
cheaper and better lol
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 08:14 PM
johnny dorn
graham taylor
blake brewer all look promising
west and william glen had a good AA year
and miller has great potential
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 08:15 PM
so, what would be the full rotation of the future?
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 08:16 PM
i hope the marlins can get max ramirez
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 08:18 PM
nolasco/johnson
volstad
miller
west
taylor
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 08:19 PM
I hope aswell...
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 08:19 PM
If the Marlins traded Hanley for just Buchholz and Jacoby they would be crazy.
If I were the Marlins, I would be looking at the 2011 season to make a deep playoff run. If they want to keep Hanley they will be paying him in double digit millions from here on.
C - Skipworth (08 #1 pick)
1B - Morrison (from minors)
2B - Sanchez?
3B - Dominguez (from minors)
SS - Lowrie (from Sox)
OF - Hermedia
OF - Maybin
OF - Stanton (from Minors)
SP - Nolasco
SP - Johnson
SP - Volstad
SP - Buchholz (From Sox)
SP - West (From Minors)
BP - Delcarmen (From Sox)
BP - Bard (From Sox)
BP - Tucker (From Minors)
I think this would be a great foundation to build off of.
Johnson would probably be gone by this time because Marlins are so cheap so I probably should have penciled in Sean West.
Posted by: Theo Epstein | January 01, 2009 at 08:20 PM
Nolasco, johnson, and miller will most probably be traded off before the new stadium due to their abbreviation eligibility by that time (if they decided to keep them from 09-11).
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 08:22 PM
they contender right now, why trade that way to be contender in 2011
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 08:33 PM
volstad
west
graham
dorn
thompson/sinkbiel/glen
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 08:35 PM
Nelson was reportably only asking for about 800K from the Marlins when they non-tendered him, so they go and give 750K to Scott Proctor instead?!
Does that make any sense to anybody else? Is there anybody in the world who would prefer Proctor to Nelson for only a 50K difference in salaries?
How a team this poorly run not constantly in last place is beyond me.
Posted by: AdropOFvenom | January 01, 2009 at 08:41 PM
it still needs a little tweaking.
maybe the prospects from a dan uggla trade would help :D
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 08:42 PM
theo here what happen,
the red sox called asking for hanley
offer ellisbury and masterson and..
the marlins hung up
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 08:43 PM
pax..
Not anti Torre, anti the way Torre used the pen.
Posted by: yankeegirl49 | January 01, 2009 at 08:44 PM
Well adro, that just shows you how penny pinching Beinfest really is.
I like your thinking Cosmo lol
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 08:44 PM
for crying out loud, Youlilis, Pedroia, Lowrie, Ellsbury are all starters for 2009 out of the RS farm system, Papelbon, Lester, Masterson, Delcarman - the RS are doing fine in player development.
I never said Hanley wasn't a great offensive player, he is, top in baseball, doesn't change the fact he can't play SS at anything higher than below league average.
The Marlins are too young, they need some more old hands to really compete, they have talent, but they need some goes who have been around. Not many starts and injury free seasons in that starting rotation.
Posted by: quintjs | January 01, 2009 at 08:44 PM
adropof,
i agree the marlins totally mismanage nelson, but i think the marlins were offering 750k and nelson wanted 900k and end up getting 1.3mil
but the marlins organization is great and that why there never in last place.
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 08:48 PM
Trade him for Peavy? Are you crazy? I would never give up this young stud 750k pitcher for Peavy!
MarlinMan,
They won't contend in 2009. The Mets and Phillies will battle it out next year. The Marlins roster just doesn't compare.
The Nationals want to pick up a few free agents and the Braves can't be any worse than last year.
Also, there is no way the Marlins go 40-31 in the division again.
I see them doing something similar to what the Rays did, but not until around 2011.
Posted by: Theo Epstein | January 01, 2009 at 08:51 PM
Quintjs,
you sound like a crappy and pissy met fan whos pissed off that the marlins knocked you guys out of the WS and a shot at making history before your new stadium.
Heres a good old saying for ya:
"Its better to be pissed on than pissed off".
sadly, you got both xD
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 08:51 PM
Theo,
put the stat paper down and enjoy the game before you come to conclusions.
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 08:53 PM
hanley can play SS his errors are mental lapses and will improve, but i think he grow out of SS and move to 3rd or LF.
marlins need veterans but are to cheap to give guys like gonzo more than 1mil
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 08:53 PM
Boy, makes you think that the marlins could have had Johan Santana and Adrian Gonzalez right now. (if they weren't cheap and ignorant).
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 08:55 PM
mdg, you are saying the Marlins rotation is going to dominate, and you go after me?
If the Marlins got 25 starts out of 1 of their opening day starters I would be stunned.
And I am nowhere close to being a Mets fan.
Time to be realistic, the Marlins were always at their best with young reliable talent and hold hands. They have none of either now. They have the talent, not the experience, and not healthy talent.
And the worse thing for the Marlins and what will prevent them from winning is everyone is building with young talent now.
Posted by: quintjs | January 01, 2009 at 08:56 PM
with the marlins rotation for the full year, the marlins can compete! the roster dont compare but baseball isnt play on paper, it play on the diamond, and on the diamond the marlins outperform the roster on paper, every year, and the mets underperform every year
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 08:56 PM
I'll give you the Marlins always play better on the field than paper would indicate, but come on.. its hard to have confidence on that rotation, who is going to be a horse? I wouldn't trust any of them to get close to 200 innings.
Are you guys honestly seeing them pass the Mets and Phillies?
Posted by: quintjs | January 01, 2009 at 09:00 PM
Look at the facts quintjs:
-Marlins 03
-Marlins 97
-Rays 08
-Red Sox's 04
-Cardinals 05
Stop thinking that the marlins are a cheap (they are), low experience, and unhealthy team. Thats why since 2001 we have been proving the who espn franchise wrong.
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 09:02 PM
the difference bewteen the marlins , rays and everyone else, is that there young talent is experienced. the same core of player are starting there 3rd and 4th full season and theyre improving. seriously the mets dont scare me, the nats are the nats, braves will get better. phils are tough
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 09:02 PM
MDG,
These are the three reasons the Mets won't contend...
The Marlins brass doesn't want to spend the money to keep top talent. Look at Hanley's contract. It is backloaded with intention of trading him. Watching the game isn't going to change that.
The top prospects aren't ready for the big leagues. Watching a game is not going to speed up their development.
The Phillies won the World Series last year. The Mets improved an 89 win team and the Marlins did not.
It doesn't take a stat sheet to figure this out. These aren't numbers, these things that can not be changed.
Posted by: Theo Epstein | January 01, 2009 at 09:03 PM
Nolasco and Volstad will be the workhorses next year.
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 09:04 PM
quintjs,
nolasco had more than 200inn,
johnson is a horse, and can reach 200inn
given miller, volstad and sachez are unlikely to reach 200inn. still the inning they provide will be quality inning
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 09:05 PM
Theo
Compare season 02 with season 03 with the marlins
compare season 96 with 97 of the marlins
compare all the seasons of the rays development in baseball with the season in 08
Reality is staring right at you.
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 09:08 PM
MDG, the marlins are a cheap, low experience and unhealthy team.
2003: Pavano, Penny, Beckett, Lowell, Pudge, Lee
Those are the types of players the Marlins need to complete, believe me, get a couple and I will pronouce them NL favourites, but until then...
I love the Marlins and the Rays for what they have done, but talent isn't always enough, and the 2005 Cardinals are proof enough of that theory.
Posted by: quintjs | January 01, 2009 at 09:11 PM
theo the opening day rotation for the marlins was
henderickson
miller
van hurken
olsen
another crappy guy i cant remember
the marlins improve without making any personal movement.
the bullpen has improve
the marlins improve with having a good rotation for the whole year
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 09:11 PM
MDG, that isn't a reason, the Pirates have been terrible for years.
The Marlins 2006 didn't help in 2007, nor did their 2007 greatly improve 2008.
You have to have a reason for a change.
Posted by: quintjs | January 01, 2009 at 09:14 PM
Quintjs those 6 players you named were all 30 and lower. What type of big bat veteran are you talking about?
pavano can be replaced with volstad, penny with nolasco, beckett with johnson, lowell with cantu/dominguez, pudge with baker, and lee with sanchez/morrison.
Young boy, talent and a spark of luck is all you need.
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 09:16 PM
look at the redsoxs bro, there 100yr+ without winning the WS did not help the next yr or the next or the next on till 04. Its possible to suck for a really long time and when the team shows a spark of improvment, the are preparing to jump in the next season.
trading jason bay was the smartest thing the pirates could have done. It has helped them alot so far and i imagine them contenting until the final month or august.
Posted by: _MDG_09 | January 01, 2009 at 09:20 PM
no, they are not replaced with those players.
You are talking about replacing 4-6 year players with at best 2-3 often less.
Posted by: quintjs | January 01, 2009 at 09:22 PM
50 post ago, these was about proctor
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 09:25 PM
The Pirates are contending for more than half a season? wow this keeps on getting better.
If they had gotten good talent back for Bay I might agree, but they didn't.
Posted by: quintjs | January 01, 2009 at 09:28 PM
Yeah but Proctor is horrible...
Posted by: Theo Epstein | January 01, 2009 at 09:29 PM
Over/Under
Proctor's ERA = 5.6
(Gregg's + Nelson's for 08 x 2)
Posted by: Theo Epstein | January 01, 2009 at 09:32 PM
Over before being injured and out for season...
Posted by: Theo Epstein | January 01, 2009 at 09:32 PM
quintjs, your a real stick in the mudd.
Yes, excuse me marlinsman, i just had to set some facts straight for people who try to cover the sun with one finger.
speaking of proctor, is he close to a madson or jc romero when it comes to setup?
Posted by: MDG25 | January 01, 2009 at 09:34 PM
drew are you a marlins fans?
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 09:38 PM
who else are the marlins going after right now?
Posted by: MDG25 | January 01, 2009 at 09:47 PM
Wow, the Marlins might have one of the best 'pens in the NL.
Posted by: DCSportsGuy | January 01, 2009 at 10:48 PM
dcsport,
are you serious or r u joking
Posted by: marlinsman1120 | January 01, 2009 at 10:57 PM
"41 games and 38 innings was overused?"
They are talking about his use earlier with the Yankees when he was used in 83 games for more than 102 innings, then turned around and did more than 86 innings in 83 games the next year. He also pitched with a blown elbow, which made things even worse.
"Plus everyone is forgetting he isn't a SS, he plays it, but isn't a good fielder or anything."
Actually, he is a natural SS, he just had the kind of youthful exuberance that led to some poor plays. He has a cannon arm and is obviously rangy, so he has the tools to play the position. Also, he improved significantly year over year because of his work ethic, to the point that he is LGavg defensively.

@quintjs: "2003: Pavano, Penny, Beckett, Lowell, Pudge, Lee"
Are you serious? You mention the guys who (except for Beckett) were underachievers until that year. And no mention of Willis or Cabrera, who filled in after injuries to Burnett and (later) Lowell?
IF you want to make an argument about what the Fish need, that's fine, but they don't "need" the guys you mentioned. They need a full year from a young but talented rotation (like in 2003!), a strong 160-180 from Andrew Miller, and a consistent showing from an improved bullpen. A fifth starter -- someone that can eat innings -- wouldn't hurt...I'd love to see Redding myself but I won't hold my breath.
@Theo: Hanley's contract is backloaded b/c the Marlins anticipate more revenue by the time those years roll around. The new stadium's slated to open in 2011, the first year Hanley starts making big money.

As A Sox fan I like the Marlins, something like 23 million a year for team revenue. Watched last 3 games against Mets, and except for Santana game they looked better.
Kistake this off-season, was not signing Nelson, there is a point where you cannot be that cheap by ownership.
Otherwise, you never know with injuries to key and expensive players to other teams, no reason Marlins cannot be a force in the NL East. I will always root for a team that thinks free agents aren't always instant championships. Hoping Sox will keep bringing in their young talent too, baseball the way it should be managed.
Phillies have been doing this too, mostly draft picks. Mets and Free Agents, well enough said there. Good luck to the Marlins.

84-77 record last year, in NL West would have been in 1st place.

"84-77 record last year, in NL West would have been in 1st place."
Except, of course, that they got brutalized by the Dodgers last season.

Has the NL West been this easy for a long time?

I dont see the dodgers as threats for one reason...
"They have no competition"

"Has the NL West been this easy for a long time?"
Ugh. Did you watch the 2007 MLB season?
"I dont see the dodgers as threats for one reason..."
You know the Dodgers outscored the Marlins nearly 2-1 last season, right?
