« Rockies Avoid Arb With De La Rosa | Main | Adam Dunn's Price Might Be Falling »
John Fay of the Cincinnati Enquirer talked to Reds GM Walt Jocketty, who is currently focused on hammering out one-year deals for arbitration-eligible players David Weathers and Edwin Encarnacion.
Fay inquired about free agents such as Bobby Abreu, Ben Sheets, and Oliver Perez. Jocketty indicated that all three are out of the Reds' price range.

What is Abreu and Sheets asking for? I still cannot believe that these two players have not been signed!!

Surprise!

The thing with Sheets is his health and that he will also cost a draft pick I believe.
Posted by: DominicanYanks | January 19, 2009 at 05:02 PM
why do the Reds refuse to spend ZERO money?!?!?! I hate this.
Posted by: CharlieHustle | January 19, 2009 at 05:23 PM
If the Reds want to spend some money they should just sign Manny. He is the only FA who meets their needs, certainly the three above mentioned aren't needed. Even if they were willing to shill out though, Boras wouldn't want his A-list client in Cincy.

Weathers is arb-eligible? I coulda sworn Lou ran him out there in the middle innings before the Nasty Boys.

The Reds started the 2008 season with a team payroll of between $74 and $75 million dollars.
After that, they got rid of David Ross ($2,525,000), King Griffey Jr ($8,282,695), Adam Dunn ($13,500,000), Paul Bako ($750,000), Corey Patterson ($3 million), Javier Valentin ($1,250,000), Ryan Freel ($3 million), Jeremy Affeldt ($3 million), David Weathers ($3.3 million), Scott Hatteberg ($1,850,000), Josh Fogg ($400,000), Jerry Hairston Jr. ($750,000), Matt Belisle ($1,250,000), Gary Majewski, Todd Coffey ($907,500), Kent Mercker, Juan Castro and Jolbert Cabrera. Added together, that is at least $45 million dollars OFF the payroll.
They had to pay a couple of million dollars to the White Sox in the KGJ deal.
The Reds traded Freel for Hernandez and also got some cash in the deal.
Sure, Harang, Arroyo, Cordero and Phillips all get raises but losing KGJ and Dunn took care of that with the Reds STILL having money left over ($8 to $10 million).
So, after paying Weathers and Edwin E in Salary Arbitration and signing Arthur Rhodes, Willy T, JHJ and some of the other scrubs off the scrap pile, the Reds should have at least $20 million still free.
On top of that, grumpy Bob Ca$htellini said after the season was over that he expected the team payroll to increase. Some estimated to as much as $80 million for 2009.
So, Bob, WHERE IS THE MONEY!!!
I mean, you SAY that you want a winning team and you SAY you will spend the money but I and a LOT of OTHER Red's fans don't see it.
All we see is the team going CHEAP again and picking up guys they HOPE can be good or picking up old or injury prone retreads other teams don't want.
You were MORE than happy to pay Adam "ONE TOOL" Dunn $13.5 million dollars last year but are NOT willing to cough up the money for a guy like Bobby Abreu. A guy who had BETTER stats (Hits, Doubles, Runs, RBI's) than Dunn over the last five years and who DIDN'T need to hit a Home Run to be productive but who is still waiting to be signed.
According to Forbes magazine, you made over $40 million dollars combined during the 2006 and 2007 seasons and the value of the team also went up during that time.
So, you have the money to do something and NOW is the time to do it while guys are inexpensive. Instead of giving LIP SERVICE to the fans and picking up these garbage players why don't you get some GOOD baseball players?
If you don't, then I do NOT want to hear YOU complain about losing records and lack of fan support. I also don't want to hear any BS about this current Reds roster being able to compete because it can't and it wont.

ctownboy this is exactly what I have been saying this whole offseason, this reds team right now will finish 4th or 5th in the central go out spend some cash get Abreu or Manny and it makes the Reds instant contenders. They dont have the money is complete BS. I agree 100% with what ctown jus wrote, get somebody in who can play and you wont have money problems because FANS WILL ACTUALLY COME TO THE GAMES WALT JOCKETTY GET A CLUE. Or trade for Nady or Swisher, the Yanks have came out and said they want to trade these guys, there out there GO GET ONE OF THEM. Everyone in Cincy wants to see a winner, and the only way its goin to happen is get someone in here, who can play ball.

no point on wasting money on crap players. im sure the reds made offers but didnt get who they wanted. id rather the team wait til next year and get a player they want insteadof settling for someone they dont really want/need.
they tried/are trying to trade for a LF(dye)
Posted by: mybeastwithin | January 19, 2009 at 08:54 PM
I'm from Indianapolis, and I too want to see a winning team in Cincy. I want Dye, or Abreu, or Nady. None of the other people that I have seen are really worth it. I don't want Jones, or Edmonds they are washed up.

price range.... Those players win you ball games and thats all we need sign sheets
Posted by: Ryan | January 19, 2009 at 09:32 PM
Reds do not need Sheets thats the last thing on there list they already have 4 of the 5 startes locked and we have a number of guys that will compete for the 5th spot and could win 10 to 12 ball games this year. Sheets will get hurt for most of the year, and will be a waste of money. If there goin to get a pitcher its going to be a lefty.

Jeremy Affeldt signed with the Giants for 2 years and $8 million dollars.
Pat Burrell signed with the Rays for 2 years and $16 million dollars.
So, for 2009 they would, combined, make $12 million dollars. Same for 2010.
Now, let's look at who the Reds thought WERE good deals and how much they are going to make.
Arthur Rhodes
2009 - $2 million
2010 - $2 million
Willy Taveras
2009 - $2.25 million
2010 - $4 million
Jerry Hairston Jr
2009 - $2 million with another possible $2 million in incentives
Lance Nix
2009 - $600,000 with another possible $500,000 in incentives
Wayne Gomes
2009 - $600,000 with another $200,000 in incentives
So, the Reds COULD have had Affeldt and Burrell on the team in 2009 for a total of $12 million but instead they have these five for a total of $7,450,000 plus the possibility of another $2.7 million if all incentives are met.
Now, which direction do you think the Reds would have been better off going?
Personally, I say the Reds SHOULD HAVE spent the money on Affeldt and Burrell. Why? Because if the Reds ARE out of contention by the trade deadline (most likely) then these two COULD hvae been traded for something. I don't think you can really say that about the five scrubs the Reds picked up instead.
For 2010, the Reds are on the hook to Willy T for $4 million and old man Rhodes for $2 million. Combined, that is half of what Affeldt and Burrell are going to get paid.

For all those non believers think about this:
Starting Pitchers:
Harang, Arroyo, Volquez, Cueto, Owings, Thompson, Rameriz, Maloney,Herrera, and Bailey(still Young) 10 starters with some major league experience
Bull pen:
Bray, Burton, Roenicke, Rhodes, Weathers, Lincoln, Cordero, all major league experience
Votto, Phillips, Gonzalez, Encarnacion, Hernandez, infield all capable of 20 + homers with back up's Keppinger, Hairston Jr., and Wilkin Castillo
In the Outfield:
Bruce, Taveras(stolen bases and leadoff), Hairston Jr.(lead off), Dickerson, Hopper(leadoff), one possible outfielder short?? Bruce can hit 20 + and dickerson to if healthy the rest can run and steal.
The 90 reds won with Danny Jackson, Jose Rijo, Tom Browning, Jack Armstrong, Tim Mahler, Ron Robinson, and Chris hammond
the bullpen had three guys: Charlton, Dibble and Meyers... after that noone
The infield was Joe Oliver Benzinger/Morris, Doran/Oester, Larkin/Duncan, Sabo
Outfield:Davis, Oneill, Hatcher(speed) with Braggs? Winngham?? Roomes???
This team of 2009 has a much better chance!
No one but the cubs in the division has done much to improve... Pirates?(no team) Astros?(oswalt and Berkman) Milwaukee?(no pitching), Cardinals?(Puhols and who) name the pitchers) and then the cubs; they have ok pitching with Zambrano, Dempster(hurt alot)Gaudin(average)Hardin (injured on and Off)Hill(young) Liily(average old) Bull pen is ashaky
There infield Lee(older) Theriot (ok, I'll take phillips), miles(average),Rameriz(better than ours, but older) there out field Soriano(doesn't field well) Fukudome(started ok faded),Gathright(speed, no bat),Milton Bradley trouble...
Reds don't sound that bad... Johnny Gomes, Arron Fultz, Lance Nix, and Ben Davis are on monor league deals with something to prove.
Go reds get off Castillin's back, He still may get that right handed hitting batter during spring training, and if not we are fine and contending unless you can prove someone is so much better in our division!
