According to Jon Paul Morosi of the Detroit Free Press, the Tigers acquired Jason Tyner from the Brewers today. Tyner, 32, will report to the Tigers' AAA club in Toledo to fill the spot of Ryan Raburn, who was promoted to the big league club today.
Strangely, Morosi writes that there were no other players or cash involved in the deal; Tigers Director of Minor League Operations Dan Lunetta says the Brewers simply assigned his contract to the Tigers organization.
Tyner has appeared with four Major League clubs, including two others in the AL Central - the Twins and Indians.

So...
The Brewers just gave the Tigers a player....
I don't get it...

That makes two of us Pskip... I can't recall another instance like this...

Do they owe the Brewers a favor now...? A lawn mowing job... Or maybe clean laundry...
Seriously, the Brewers didn't even ask for a bag of balls or some bats?

Maybe it was a (very low) salary dump?
I don't get it either, guys...

Very odd move. Has a transaction like this ever happened before where one team just gives a player to another for nothing?

The only time I ever heard of something like this was in the movie Rookie of the Year when Henry was getting sold to the Yankees. A bit farfetched but that is about the only thing I can think of!

There have been instances of a player being traded for a "Player to be Named Later" where there never ended up being a player named, but this is the first time I've ever seen an outright reassignment to a different team. Kinda funny.

I feel sorry for him. Can you imagine the conversation when they called him into the manager's office to tell him.
Tyner: "Hey, Skip. What's up?"
Manager:"You're going to Detroit."
T:"I've been traded?"
M:"No, we gave you to them."
Silence

Sheesh, at least when the Dodgers traded for Rickey Henderson they gave the Newhark Bears 6 dozen baseballs.

According to the Nashville Sounds website, it's for a PTBNL or cash considerations.

Is it that hard to believe the Brewers were just trying to give a 32 year-old journeyman a shot at playing every day?

There's no such thing as a free lunch.

"Every day" was a poor choice of words. But "in the big leagues" works fine in that spot.
And honestly, given how often players get it written into that contracts that they can leave a team's minor league system if they have a chance to join a major league club, it seems like this is something of a common courtesy for also-ran role players.

Isn't Tyner the player that has only one ML homerun?

Me either, but I'm sure it has happened. This is nothing compared to when John McDonald got traded for a PTBNL (which ended up being himself).
