The Pete Incaviglia Rule

Here's a quick one for the MLBTR Glossary...

A player cannot be traded until one year after he signs with a major league team. The rule was instituted after the Expos traded Pete Incaviglia to the Rangers just months after drafting him. This MLB.com article says he was dealt because the Expos had trouble signing him. Incaviglia, who would go on to become an all-or-nothing hitter with the Rangers, was chosen eighth overall by the Expos in 1985.

So is it time the Reds get a real left fielder and trade Yonder Alonso. The kids got potential, and Votto blocks him

Why not try moving Votto to left field and Encarnacion to first when he comes back, and then move Edwin when Alonso is ready?

The Reds just really need to find a good young catcher because Hanigan and Mesoraco aren't long term options.

What a stupid rule, seriously, if a team signs a player, they should be able to trade him.

Actually, I personally think that if a player is drafted by a team and that team cannot sign the player that the team should be able to trade his rights as well. I know that sounds odd but it might work out.

im going to have to go ahead and agree with xethicx. this is a stupid rule, a really really stupid rule.

if a team drafts someone, they should hold the rights to that player and be able trade that player if they feel like doing so.
correct me if im wrong, but if a team drafts a player they have a certain time period in which to sign that player and if they fail to do so that player's rights no longer belong to that team but instead he goes into the next years draft? which is ridiculous. that gives the player all the leveredge. if he doesnt like the team and/or isnt getting the contract he wants he can not sign and the team is screwed because they loose the player but the player can simply be drafted again where the team is left with nothing. why should any player yet to play professionally at any level hold so much leverage?

if a team drafts someone and is having a hard time signing him they should be able to trade that player.
