Tigers Notes: Rodney, Perry, Polanco

It took 163 games to determine the AL Central title in 2009.  The Detroit Tigers were, of course, on the losing end.  After leading the Tigers to the 2006 World Series in his first year as their skipper, Jim Leyland has been unable to steer the club back to the postseason.

As Keith Law writes, "This one will be hard to get past."  Along with Baseball Prospectus and the ESPN Insider staff, Law takes a look at this past season and what the Tigs can do to improve in 2010.  An Insider subscription is required to read the article, but here are some of the key tidbits from the piece:

  • Law highlights the team's lack of production at the DH spot as one of its biggest shortcomings.  However, GM Dave Dombrowski recently said that the team is unlikely to employ a full-time DH next season.  If for some reason he has a change of heart, he will find more than a few candidates on the open market.
  • Bullpen staples Brandon Lyon and Fernando Rodney are headed for free agency.  Law says that Rodney "has the closer's mantle but not closer command."  Ryan Perry should be able to step into that role eventually, but currently lacks the control to do so.  if the youngster is asked to be the fireman and Lyon and Rodney walk, it'll leave a significant void in the 'pen.
  • Christina Kahrl of Baseball Prospectus points out the poor performances of mid-season acquisitions Jarrod Washburn and Aubrey Huff.  After posting a 2.64 ERA, 7.4 H/9 and 2.2 BB/9 in 20 starts with Seattle, Washburn recorded a 7.33 ERA, 10.7 H/9 and 3.3 BB/9 in eight starts.  Huff was supposed to strengthen the middle of the Tigers' lineup but instead floundered as he recorded an OPS of .567.
  • Tigers' second baseman Placido Polanco is a free agent after completing a four-year deal worth $4.6MM annually.  The article says that retaining him would require $6-7MM per season, a steep price for a player who is not likely to improve much on his 2009 season in which he hit .285/.331/.396 with 10 HRs.  Polanco, who turns 34 tomorrow, has been a $50MM value over the last three years according to Fangraphs
  • When Buster Olney polled six GMs asking if Detroit would keep Polanco, they were split.  Law & Co. think that there's a good chance that Polanco plays elsewhere next season.
  • Kevin Goldstein of Baseball Prospectus writes that 24-year-old Scott Sizemore is ready to take over for Polanco at second base.  Scouts feel that he will become a well-rounded offensive player who should be able to hit ".280-plus with 12-15 home runs, 60 walks and 15-20 stolen bases annually."
  • Because of high-priced commitments to Magglio Ordonez and Dontrelle Willis, the Tigers don't have much financial flexibility.  Expect Detroit to find their next closer on the cheap from within the organization.
  • Kahrl closes the piece by saying, "they need a major upgrade at DH or left if they're going to offensively afford themselves a luxury like a plus defender at shortstop."  Dave Dombrowski will have to get creative as he is handcuffed by several bad contracts.

I think Mags can be the upgrade in left, judging by his second half. He may not hit 20 homers ever again, but his avg and ops definitely make him a worthwhile player

35 XBH over 518 PA's is not good performance regardless of where you play. The guy is a bad defender, bad baserunner, and looks to only be getting worse.

Dombrowski should have lost his job for not mandating that Mags sit. The guy didn't cross the 700 OPS mark until early August. They were more than justified to bench the guy.

Sign Holliday

"Dombrowski should have lost his job for not mandating that Mags sit."

Disagree, Mags had a .978 OPS post all star break, well worth it. The big issue for this team was relying on Washburn. Every baseball fan said there was no way in hell Washburn would keep up his numbers or for that matter be anything more than a 5th starter in Detroit.

If I cost my boss 18 million over something so obvious and avoidable I'd expect to be fired.

Magglio for Lowe?

What was that OPS prior to the All-Star break? He never should have had a chance to redeem himself.

The worst part is that you are now stuck with him in '10. Good luck with that.

There is so much dead weight on the Tigers' books I can't believe Dombrowski has a job. Where do you start? Nate Robertson? Jeremy Bonderman? Dontrelle Willis?

Then you have a manager like Leyland batting career AAA players third in the lineup. Clete Thomas should not even be in the majors let alone batting in front of Miguel Cabrera.

It's a miracle they got to 163 before being eliminated.

I see your point, but well, argument can be made that Ordonez's second-half contribution brought the Tigers very close to making the playoffs...

Tigers need a veteran starter. Derek Lowe had a down year but has a history of rebounding really well. He has 3 years left in his contract 15mill/per year. The Braves need a righty bat with some power. Magglio also had a down season. Tigers need pitching. Would it be a fair deal Magglio for Derek Lowe?

I'm a little surprised about all the negativity regarding Magglio. People act like this was a contract that was signed this year. This was the price they had to pay to land him at the time they did. Consider 2010's salary the price for all the years of production he gave us, not just next year.

I'm amazed at the number of people willing to assume that a player's career is over as soon as they have a bad half-season. There were obvious reasons for his slump and obvious indications that it is over. He won't replicate his career year of 2007, but he will provide production for a team that needs it. Take that money and spend it on the open market, you're still rolling the dice. Just because you have the money to land someone doesn't mean you will. Sure, I'd rather have Holliday than Ordonez at this point, but what's the chance of getting him over all his other suitors? 5%?

I do concur that he is not a good defender, but he's not a black hole either. The Tigers have many issues to address next year, but Mags ain't one of 'em.

tommy, magglio does not have power
in his monster second half he only had average power

Braves would not do this.
I hope...

As much as I hate to see it, I think they have to gamble and (yikes) get Milton Bradley. If he wants a laid back job, DHing for the Tigers is about as easy as it gets. Look at Maggs' first half numbers, worse than Milton's, yet he was never booed or insulted, etc. Tigers need someone to hit besides Cabrera and its gotta be cheap - hence the terrible gamble that is Milton Bradley.

Besides that, Polanco should walk and let Sizemore take over with Santiago. Let Rodney go and open up closer in the spring btwn Lyon, Perry, and Zumaya. Get a 5th starter somehow...

Braves-NL-Champs-2010

Here are my reasons why I think we should trade for Ordonez.

1) It gets rid of Lowe's contract. Even though Ordonez makes 18 mil this season that's only 3 mil more than Lowe.

2) If Ordonez doesn't work out it's only for 1 season. Even in a down year for him he still hit over .300+ and had an .800+ OPS.

3) He's RH and kills LHP which we all know is key in our division. I really think his HR will bounce back but even if they don't he hits a ton of doubles which are just as good as HR to me.

4) He's not a terrible defender, he'll be much better than Anderson was in LF, plus swapping contracts gives us more flexibility to improve other area such as our BP, 1B and our other OF spot. I didn't like the idea of Ordonez/Lowe swap at 1st look but now I'm warming to the idea. If he bounces back and hits 20+ HR like he's capable of then our offense would be very good with him between Chipper and McCann.

I actually like Lowe and wouldn't mind losing Ordonez for him, as long as his peripherals return to where they were. Much better than Bonderman for Bradley as suggested on another thread.

One thing to point out about Ordonez is he has an option for 2011. It is a club option, but vests if he gets "135 starts or 540 PAs in 2010, or 270 starts or 1,080 PAs in 2009-10" (Cot's). The option is for $15M.

Having said that, I think a Lowe for Ordonez swap could work for both clubs. It would also allow us to resign LaRoche. Maggs may not be a power hitter anymore, but he is still a dangerous enough hitter to help the Braves' lineup. Top to bottom the lineup would be solid. Although I'd like to see a little more speed at the top.

That would be a terrible trade for Detroit. Derek Lowe is middle of the rotation starter at best, and you'd want to give him 45 million over the next 3 years? Just give Magglio his 18 million next year, don't let it vest, and be on your way. The last thing Detroit needs to be doing again is signing, or taking on terrible contracts. It already looks like the division is going to be very weak next year again if Detroit doesn't go into FA once they lose Polanco, Rodney, and Lyon. Cle sucks, KC sucks, and Chi is avg only with a modest rotation. The team to beat again next year as of this moment is the Twins.

wes37walz:

Of course the Braves would have to kick in some cash to balance it out. I wouldn't expect a straight up trade.

To tell you the truth, I look at the Tigers rotation, and after Verlander and Porcello the rest it's crap. I realize there may be a difference between AL, and NL, but Lowe is durable, eats a lot of innings and he is a sinkerball pitcher so the fact that he'll be 36 or 37 next year doesn't matter. He is a veteran starter who just won 15 games, 21 quality starts, and an ERA of 4 and a half. Take out the game he had against the Mets where he just seemed to lost it after getting hit by a line drive and his ERA changes from 4.67 to 4.38 in 191 innings. He had like 4 rainouts at the beginning of the year, and had to leave the game early because he had a couple of blisters.

He'll have a better year next year, it was just a difficult transition pitching in cozy big Dodger stadium in the NL west where the best offensive weapon was Conor Jackson, to pitching in hotlanta in the NL East, where the Marlins, Phillies, and even the Nationals had more powerful lineups(than the one's he had to face last year in the NL west).

I'm a Braves fan, the only reason I want them to trade Lowe is because of that big contract, and the fact that I loved the way Kawakami pitched this year, and I know he is only going to get better.

And Magglio makes sense considering Lowe's current trade value, and Magglio making a lot of money too being a right handed hitter who happens to play the outfield and finished with an OPS over 800. While Garret anderson had an OPS of 705 but had 13 homers.

And Magglios option wont vest because Jason Heyward would come up in June, that would limit Magglio's starts.

I love Lowe for Maggs

trading guillen or mags for harang instead of lowe would be better.. if the reds would go for it..
