Mariners Release Ricky Orta

The Mariners released righty Ricky Orta to free up a 40-man roster spot for one of their recent call-ups, according to a team press release.

Orta, 25, posted a 1.94 ERA, 8.9 K/9, and 3.9 BB/9 in 41.6 Double A innings last year.  Baseball America ranked Orta 27th among Mariners prospects heading into the season, expecting him to reach the big league bullpen.  However, he had Tommy John surgery in the spring.

Gee, couldn’t they have transferred him to the 60 day DL and kept him?

Exactly my thinking.

Doesn’t matter either way. No one is going to claim a AA relief pitcher fresh off tommy john surgery.

We’re seriously too cheap to just put him on the 60-Day DL? Or we couldn’t just DFA Hannahan?

DFA Hannahan where? He’s already in AAA… this is what Dave Cameron of USSMariner tweeted about the release “Betting M’s re-sign Orta to a minor league deal after he clears waivers, thus avoiding granting him a year of service by DL’ing him.” Makes sense

IF they put him on the 60-day DL, they would have to pay him the Major League minimum salary. Not a smart move, financially
