Randy Winn Wants To Play In 2011

By Ben Nicholson-Smith | October 22, 2010 at 5:01pm CDT

After 13 years and 1,717 regular season games, Randy Winn still hasn’t appeared in the playoffs, but the outfielder tells B.J. Rains of FOXSportsMidwest.com that he’s not worried about signing with a contender this offseason. At this stage in his career, the 36-year-old is simply looking for a job.

“I would like to find a team that would like me to play for them, that’s going to be my first thing,” Winn said. “I don’t know what my options are going to be. I hope some organization thinks I can come in and help. That’s what I’m hoping for.”

The Yankees were hoping Winn could be a useful fourth outfielder when they signed him last winter, but he struggled and they designated him for assignment. The Cardinals picked him up, but the team struggled down the stretch so Winn missed the playoffs yet again.

Winn batted .239/.307/.356 in 233 plate appearances between the Yankees and Cardinals and played all three outfield positions. He signed for $1.1MM last winter, but he’s likely looking at a minor league deal this time. Winn doesn’t expect to sign soon, but he says he’s happy to wait for offers and play with his kids.

So he wants to ride somebody else’s coat tails to the playoffs? Batting .239/.307/.356 isn’t going to get it done for a contender.

He could earn his way by signing a minor league contract

Huge disappointment with NY. Winn came from the Giants where he played just about regularly and could not adapt to part-time status and a different array of pitchers. Despite that, he was basically given the 4th OF job and couldn’t hold it. As Mark S posted, he’s going to have to earn it from the minors.

Poor fella. Obviously, he hasn’t done much to earn himself a Major League Contract for next season, but I feel bad that the poor guy has never played in a post-season game.

PLEASE don’t resign him Cardinals. I know Tony loves his old scrappy veterans, but I hate seeing a lineup with Pedro Feliz, Randy Winn, and Aaron Miles all getting starts.

Ha ha yeah, but he’s definitely not alone in that department. Didn’t Melky Cabrera do something similar in the past year? And Adam Dunn, I definitely remember him pulling one of those too — in RF of all places.

Melky threw a ball from center into right. Even though the Reds won the Central, that was one of my favorite moments from the Reds this year.

He was a classy player for the Giants, but it seemed clear two years ago that he was done as a regular. Hopefully his body holds up enough that he can contribute somewhere as a 5th outfielder.

Winn would make a good coach. As a player, no thanks.
