Orioles GM Links: Dipoto, Reagins, Levine, Ricciardi

By Mark Polishuk | October 13, 2011 at 10:01pm CDT

Here's the latest from Baltimore as the O's look to replace Andy MacPhail…

  • The Diamondbacks have given permission for the Orioles to interview Jerry Dipoto, reports Scott Miller of CBSSports.com.  Dipoto is Arizona's senior VP of scouting and player development and served as the club's interim GM after Josh Byrnes was fired midway through the 2010 season.
  • Dipoto's interview should come this weekend, reports Roch Kubatko of MASNsports.com.  The Orioles also hope to speak to Al Avila (Tigers), Dan Jennings (Marlins), Tony LaCava (Blue Jays), De Jon Watson and Logan White (both Dodgers), all of whom have been mentioned in connection to the Baltimore job.  Avila could be passed over since "the Orioles want to wrap up this process as soon as possible" and can't wait until the Tigers finish their playoff run.
  • Two names that will apparently not be part of the process, according to Kubatko, are former Angels GM Tony Reagins and Rangers assistant GM Thad Levine.  Both men could still resurface as candidates, Kubatko notes.  Given that Texas is still alive in the postseason, Levine could be facing the same issue as Avila.
  • J.P. Ricciardi is on the "short list of decision-makers" that the Orioles are considering, tweets ESPN's Buster Olney.  Since the O's are just starting their search, Olney says it's too early to say if Ricciardi or any others on the short list are favorites for the job.  Andy Martino of the New York Daily News reports (via Twitter) that the Mets haven't received requests from any team to interview Ricciardi or Paul DePodesta about a general managing job.
  • No surprise here, but Olney says "it's pretty clear that Buck Showalter will have extensive influence in the selection of the Orioles' GM."

I have a feeling he goes to LAA, but I’ve been begging for him for weeks now.

If Ricciardi can turn a 180 and do the exact opposite of everything he did in Toronto, then he might be a pretty good GM, for once.

      Sounds both reasonable and possible.

Oh man Oh man Oh man.  Considered going down to Camden this weekend to show him he has fan support for his interview.  Then thought it’d be creepy if I was the only one there.  Sigh.

You would be the only one there, if the Orioles hired DiPoto, I would give it one full week into the “Regular Season” before the Oriole Fans would start Chanting

        “DiPoto Must Go!”

        “DiPoto Must Go!”

        “DiPoto Must Go!”

Giving away Dan Haren for Joe Saunders was just like the TV show Pro Vs Joes
Angels getting the “Pro” and Diamondback literally getting a “Joe”
D Back fans didn’t like the trade at all and on top of it letting yourself get fooled by someone like Tony Reagins is an embarrassment to the whole entire Organization!

Real solid pick there Jeff in DiPoto… real solid pick!

To say it was a total fleece is not true, the Dbacks got screwed in the present with the Haren deal.  However Dipoto did land Pat Corbin and Tyler Skaggs, two very promising lefties, which will help set up Arizona’s future rotation quite nicely.

Wow way to pick a single trade to judge a GM off of.  There was no way of knowing they were going to turn it around this quickly given they more recently had lost more than 90 games the year before.  Also, look at the Jackson trade.  Stop being such a negative nancy.  Maybe you’ll get your Lacava and be happy but right now you’re just annoying acting like everyone else’s picks for GM are worse than yours.

I’d be perfectly happy with Dipoto, LaCava, Jennings or White as long as the rest of the O’s front office is either fired or reassigned. Actually, just get rid of the Stockstills and I’ll be happy. Oh, and Matt Klentak can stay.

Not a bad choice on that list IMO. as long as they get a chance to work without the handcuffs of the owner of course

Tony Reaggins would probably go and trade Reynolds and Guthrie for Soriano
