Pirates, Mariners, Twins Interested In Jeff Francis

By Tim Dierkes | December 6, 2011 at 1:06pm CDT

1:06pm: Francis' agent will also meet with the Pirates and Twins this week, tweets Morosi.

TUESDAY, 11:04am: The Mariners will meet today with Francis' agent, tweets Geoff Baker of the Seattle Times.  Francis is represented by Frontline, as our agency database shows.

MONDAY, 12:09pm: The Mariners are also interested in Francis, tweets Morosi.  Additionally, the Ms have interest in old favorite Jamie Moyer.

11:19am: The Pirates are among the teams with interest in free agent lefty Jeff Francis, tweets Jon Paul Morosi of FOX Sports.  The Bucs were in on Francis a year ago, but with a healthy season in the books he'll certainly require more than a one-year, $2MM guarantee this time.

The Pirates also reportedly have interest in free agent pitchers Wei-Yin Chen, Tsuyoshi Wada, and Aaron Cook.

Pirates interested in Jeff Francis. I read that as “Pirates couldn’t care less about winning.”

saying “certainly require more than one year, $2M” for Jeff Francis scares me a bit.  his numbers are awful.  i think Maholm has better numbers (not in win percentage, but i think in ERA and other stats)

agreed, Jeff Francis is clearly no upgrade from Paul Maholm, unless Maholm’s injury is much more serious than previously reported.

      Francis 2011: 85 ERA+, 1.437 WHIP, 0.9 HR/9, 1.9 BB/9, 4.5 K/9, 1.4 bWAR
      Maholm 2011: 105 ERA+, 1.294 WHIP, 0.6 HR/9, 2.8 BB/9, 5.4 K/9, 2.6 bWAR

you people on here seriously need to think about who the pirates are actually fit to sign. they cant go after the big name free agents (ie: pujols, fielder, buehrle, cj wilson, kuroda, beltran, darvish, rollins, oswalt) because they want to play for WINNERS WITH MONEY!! the only way the pirates obtain someone like those on that list is to grossly overpay them such as the nationals and jason werth. the pirates are pretty much a below-average market based on payroll and population of the market. personally, i want huntington to sign edwin jackson and then be done with it. rotation of jackson, morton, karstens, mcdonald, correia….DONE. if not jackson, sign erik bedard. his numbers are very similar to maholm’s but bedard has slighter more velocity. both work horse lefties too

Did you just call Erik Bedard a “workhorse lefty”?  Seriously?

It’s kind of a perfect fit when your criteria for a workhorse is to finish at the bottom of the league every year.  Someone remind me again why they still have a team there?

A workhouse with that many injuries would’ve been laid out Barbaro style long ago.

Bedard is one of the most fragile pitchers in MLB.  He is a DL move waiting to happen, like Ryan Doumit was.  Sad thing, he would be our number one in the rotation.

I don’t know why you wouldn’t play for the Pirates.  It would probably be in the best interest of Francis or any decent player to join the Pirates.  Toward the end of the season, he’ll be traded along with anyone else who put up good numbers to a playoff contender.  How is that for increasing his chances of getting into the playoffs?

Francis should sign with Seattle on a one year deal when he posts a 2.80 ERA he can get a nice 3/30 contract next year

Is there a better place than Seattle for Moyer? Lefty in that park, with mostly good defense, not too bad for a place to continue a career… Unless you want wins.

Will sign with the Dodgers for 2 years 11 million. That way none of the other teams have pitching and we automatically win right? Right?!

Moyer should goto San Diego…he would have great numbers down there, and old people like warmer climates..

Jeff Francis?  This is so Pittsburghish here.  Another reclamation project.  What, are we trying to get a Colorado reunion set here with Hurdle and alot of his former players.  Aaron Cook next … awesome.
